Not American, but would vote Democrat.

What an absolute embarrassment. This is how to fumble your lead with young voters.

I’m guessing that the places that the LGBTQ+ community should think twice about visiting, are that same places that you wouldn’t want to travel to or move to if you’re a woman, or if you’re not white.

I’m thinking about specific American states, in keeping with the article.

There are most definitely places around the world where me being a white guy would not be a plus.

If he was stupid enough to participate in the January 6 insurrection, he’ll be stupid enough to get caught.

Additionally, if there’s ever a reward for turning him in, I’d fully expect that the least stupid of his associates is going to get a few bucks in their pocket, and a clean break from the shit show.

Texas wants Planned Parenthood to repay millions of dollars (apnews.com)

The case now before him in America’s biggest red state does not surround abortion, which has been banned in Texas since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year. But Planned Parenthood argues the attempt to recoup at least $17 million in Medicaid payments for health services, including cancer screenings, is a...

Thankfully, most world leaders don’t play geopolitics as though it took place in some nightclub on three for one highballs night.

I’m too old fat and slow to go to the club now, but I don’t ever remember picking fights working out very well for the aggressor.

What made you choose your instance?

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

I chose lemmy.world for my main account, mostly for the name. Just sounds like a central place to be. I’ve bailed on one instance on account of them dragging their feet on defederating from exploding heads.

You can get the Death Penalty for a wide variety of behaviors in the US. Playing outside, sleeping in your bed, taking a walk, having a disagreement with a neighbor, being black, going to school, shopping, attending an outdoor concert, intervening in a dispute, attempting to steer clear of a dispute, driving, etc.

Sync user here. It’s the reason that I found reddit usable. The effort that has gone into creating and refining the app is evident. I like it better than the the other apps, because it feels like home to me. I also enjoy the concept of u/spez unintentionally spotlighting lemmy, and literally tossing over the very best that reddit had to offer. Sync is just one of several excellent options already here, or on their way.

The free apps are anywhere from very good to very work in progress. I like Connect the best from what I’ve used. I expect that they will all improve over time, and have noticed improvements over a short length of time.

I actually enjoy the controversy/buzz over pricing, pricing models, privacy, and so on. This is mostly because I’m petty, and believe that all of this is hastening reddit’s demise.

    MushuChupacabra,
    @MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world avatar

Personally, I don’t need yet another subscription service.

That being said, I’ve used Sync for years (Pro, so just ad removal, one time fee.), and just paid again for ad removal. I did this because I enjoy the app, and appreciate the effort that goes into creating and maintaining it.

I have no qualms about paying a person for quality work.

    MushuChupacabra,

    What a miserable take.

You’re sad that a good app came out for lemmy? Does it prevent other apps from working?

    MushuChupacabra,

    Ok.

What movies, books or tv shows are meant to spoof/parody a particular genre while actually being a great example of the genre?

The 3 that come to mind for me are Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The Princess Bride. All three are poking fun at their respective genres but also are great examples of the genre. I’m curious if Lemmy has other such examples.

    MushuChupacabra,
    @MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world avatar

The Orville. Homage more than parody I’d say.

Well, he did run the company into a revenue-destroying iceberg (in this case, iceberg = Elon Musk), and is now rearranging the deck chairs as the company sinks, so all Titanic references are apt.

A verdict in a court of law is based on what is presented, not on what happened. This is what makes it possible for people to commit a crime, and get away with it (or get framed for something that they didn’t do).

This is a question that I do not want you to answer here, but one to ponder:

If your son/nephew/younger was up for a part in a project that was directed by, and starring Kevin Spacey? What weight would you assign to that Not Guilty due to insufficient evidence verdict?

    MushuChupacabra,
    @MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world avatar

“Where does the judge say that evidence was insufficient for a verdict? I missed that part.”

The primary cause of your confusion is your insistence on missing the point.

“Also, are we going to start questioning every verdict as if any accusation was true, even when proved differently in court?”

Again, missing the point. Who is talking about every verdict, besides yourself? This is Kevin Spacey specific.

Do you believe that not getting convicted means that the accused did not do the thing that they are accused of?

Is it your personal belief that Kevin Spacey is completely harmless with respect to sexual predation? Does your confidence extend far enough that you would have no qualms about a young male relative of yours work on a movie with Kevin Spacey?

    MushuChupacabra,

A sexy outfit can get you arrested in Phoenix — especially if you’re Black or trans (www.phoenixnewtimes.com)

In January, a 23-year-old woman sat in Phoenix Municipal Court listening to a prosecutor lay out the evidence against her. On the night of her arrest, she was scantily dressed, the prosecutor told the judge. She also had condoms in her purse and got into a car with a man....

Do you think a community like r/TrueChristian or r/AskAChristian would be welcome on lemmy.world?

I don’t know any true Christians who are MAGA or racists or even bigots. But with the commonly used definition that if someone says something is bad they automatically are seen as hating the people doing it many people arguing in communities like that would be called haters or bigots and possibly be banned here on lemmy.world....

No true Christian would [heinous behavior] doesn’t work very well, when [heinous behavior] is basically synonymous with the brand.

If you’re asking for/requesting a soft spot for an AskAChristian community here, you should expect an abundance of difficult questions from people who came to lemmy, to get away from the wrath that is Christian love.

What are the strategic considerations behind the active spread of anti-vax theories?

When it comes to spreading disinformation about climate change or the risks of smoking, I can clearly see how it protects economic interests (e.g. the value of the assets of the fossil fuel industry or the tobacco industry). I therefore understand that these lies are (have been) regularly pushed by people who do not necessarily...

The movement seems to be more about expanding its base than informing or protecting them. Once ensnared, followers will reliably go to the polls, and vote the way they are told to vote.

Being staunchly antivaxx is detrimental to good health at the personal level, and at the public health level.

Based on real world outcomes, the antivaxx lobby gets enough of their base to vote as directed, to offset any lost votes due to base members dying for lack of protection from vaccines.

I mean, they kill off only a small portion of their base with bad advice, but get the political results that they want. Why would they care?

It's dark comedy for a tragically comic situation.

By definition, I'd say all of the jokes are in very poor taste, which is what makes them so funny. The specifics of this particular tragedy practically call out for grim comedy: Safety shmafety, Logitech, Blink 182 getting sucked into the spotlight, etc.

I do think that all the chatter about the disaster has underscored some critically important points:

Billionaires are just as stupid as everyone else. They are not exceptional people in any way.

If you're not a deep sea oceanography expert of any sort, you should keep your undersea adventures to much shallower waters.

"Hey Personal Assistant, can you give me the dirt sheet on this submarine company? I'm thinking of visiting the Titanic." Would have saved lives. Those tickets to an undersea adventure were a quarter of a million dollars per seat. I've done better due diligence buying a ukulele online than these halfwits.
