Isoprenoid,

As long as it’s not run by corporations there’s no problem.

Just because the fediverse doesn’t have sponsorships doesn’t mean corporations aren’t interested in poisoning the well. Anyone could be a bad actor. Heck, it could be anyone. I could be a corporate shill and you’d never know.

Wikipedia runs on donations. Does that mean that outside entities aren’t interested in biased editing?

Isoprenoid,

I’m not convinced. You’ve made several claims, and maybe it’s obvious to you as to why it’s hard for corporations to infect the fediverse, but not to me. I’m probably too smooth brained to see it.

Here is Phil Jamesson using the behaviour of Reddit and the upvote system to get to the top of /r/videos:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=69bFOYklP-E

What is stopping the marketing team of a corporation to influence the fediverse using similar and more advanced techniques? Lemmy uses an upvote system. Why can’t it be abused like Reddit’s system?

I’ve already seen several examples of small scale brigading. I can’t mention examples because it would immediately make this post another target.

Polish Hackers Repaired Trains the Manufacturer Artificially Bricked. Now The Train Company Is Threatening Them (www.404media.co)

The situation is a heavy machinery example of something that happens across most categories of electronics, from phones, laptops, health devices, and wearables to tractors and, apparently, trains. In this case, NEWAG, the manufacturer of the Impuls family of trains, put code in the train’s control systems that prevented them...

Isoprenoid,

I have to wonder how long until society collapses

We’ll just hack it back into working order.

Isoprenoid,

… as long as that criticism doesn’t put into question the ideas that I base my identity on.

Isoprenoid,

No. player two would be the same wereanimal as player one. The type of animal that the players would transform into would change depending on the level.

For example: Level 1 was the werewolf form youtu.be/NC_7n4T3eNs?t=98

Level 2 was the weredragon form: youtu.be/NC_7n4T3eNs?t=225

Isoprenoid,

While I understand the sentiment, some people are hustling so that they can stay alive.

Isoprenoid,

The problem is that the joke is old and isn’t interesting. It’s like talking about weather and then claiming you’re Oscar Wilde.

Person: “Hey, aren’t religious people wacky?”

Crickets

Isoprenoid,

unfortunately they continue to occupy positions of authority in our society.

No need to pick on religious people in this case. There are plenty of people with various character flaws in positions of power / authority.

If religious people were actually dismissed in the way you describe I could understand your perspective. They are not mocked liked this though and are very much taken seriously.

So you don’t know about:

  • Bill Maher
  • Bill Hicks
  • George Carlin
  • South Park
  • any comedy movie that involves a religious character
  • the Internet
Isoprenoid,

Yup, I’ve heard this one before as well. Got anything new to add to the discussion?

Isoprenoid,

Culture doesn’t affect government? That’s new to me.

Isoprenoid,

Please tell me how south park poking fun at you,

Not me.

Isoprenoid,

You lost me at “their church”.

Isoprenoid,

You okay, bro? You seem upset.

Isoprenoid,

My brother in Christ, this isn’t about the money. This is about meeting business deadlines. OP can’t be using time trying to figure out something on Linux when his clients are waiting.

His first clients are also going to be where his solo practice either sinks or swims.

Isoprenoid, (edited )

It’s because the speakers for the iPhone are on the bottom of the phone.

Edit: I meant the speakers that are used for “hands free mode”, which is what the user in the image is doing. The reason why people hold their phone like this is because it directs the speaker sound straight at them (again, in hands free mode).

Isoprenoid,

If that were the case the dozens of phone calls a day would tell me I’m way too loud.

Maybe they’re being polite by not mentioning it, or don’t care. Also it’s not about being too loud, it’s about distortion.

Isoprenoid,

You should be spending 1% of your homes value on maintenance each year, which many people don’t/can’t budget for.

Yeah, that money comes from the rent that the tenants are paying. This isn’t rocket science, it’s financial competence.

If you’re a business owner, but can’t budget in expenses then you’re a bad business owner.

This is the reason why some people recommend we have a landlord licence. We’re playing with people’s living conditions here.

the ever growing list of maintenance tasks is getting exhausting.

This is why some landlords delegate those tasks to other people (e.g. tradesmen, property managers, etc).

Try the stories in Judges, thems were tough times and crazy stories. The Old Testament is especially metal because the Jesus story arc hadn’t happened yet.

Judges 4:18-22 (NIV)

Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Come, my lord, come right in. Don’t be afraid.” So he entered her tent, and she covered him with a blanket.

“I’m thirsty,” he said. “Please give me some water.” She opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him up.

“Stand in the doorway of the tent,” he told her. “If someone comes by and asks you, ‘Is anyone in there?’ say ‘No.’”

But Jael, Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died.

Just then Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. “Come,” she said, “I will show you the man you’re looking for.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple—dead.

Isoprenoid,

Don’t tell this guy about Song of Solomon.

Isoprenoid,

His argument is:

  1. A lot of people were using poor adblockers.
  2. Youtube can block the bad ones but struggles with the good ones.
  3. People switch to the better adblockers (some of which require a subscription)
Isoprenoid,

You think your 7s are distinct from your ones.

I know that my 7s are distinct from my ones.

We are not the same.

Isoprenoid,

Protip: Don’t go up to random people in the gym saying “Hey, nice thighs” and then ask them to choke you with them.

Ask me how I know.Because I’m not a creeper.

Isoprenoid,

Dude, I’m willing to bet the son has at least one.

“I’m proud to tell ya, my son has got a clean slate.”

A quote like this tempts fate. I thought he was trying to avoid temptation.

Isoprenoid,

or listen to some podcasts from both sides

And listen to podcasts from a third party. Try to find sources that are as objective as possible.

Isoprenoid,

Just to clarify: people don’t have to be nice to you, but they don’t get to be a dick.

Remember: neutrality is the way.

"Choices" by Mr. Lovenstein (files.mastodon.social)

alt textTitle: Choose your own adventure! Option A: Stay up late. Panel depicts person sitting up at night behind a laptop with an energy drink. Option B: Go to bed early. Panel depicts person sleeping restfully at eight o’ clock. If you chose option A: panel depicts tired person holding a cup of coffee saying “I’m so...

Isoprenoid,

I’ll be a stickler, you need to make the same choice consistently over several nights. Just because it’s the weekend doesn’t mean you get to stay up late.

Unless you like punishing yourself, then go right ahead.

Isoprenoid,

Of course by then, the time you’d have spent would be worth more than $25

Yes, but you’d now have a script that can be used in the future as well. Automation is a magical thing, my friend.

Isoprenoid,

Also science way back: “Hey guys, isn’t phlogiston just the absolute best? And lobotomies are so cool they deserve a Nobel prize.”

Isoprenoid,

science gets closer to the truth over time

Now we step into epistemology. This claim cannot be substantiated. We don’t know if science is getting closer to the truth because we don’t know what the truth is.

Science finds what works, it may or may not be finding the truth. It’s incredibly useful, and gets more useful over time, but we cannot claim that it gives us the truth. We cannot measure the “truthiness” of a science claim.

Unless you assume “If something works, then it’s the truth.”. I wouldn’t support this statement though.

Isoprenoid,

Did you think this was a clever response?

Isoprenoid,

It’s okay, you can just do a re-watch. It’s not like it’s been deleted by the Elders of the Internet.

Isoprenoid,

I’m getting different vibes from Wikipedia:

en.wikipedia.org/…/North_Carolina's_13th_congress…

Isoprenoid,

Thanks for the info, Wikipedia just needs an update.

Since the map had already passed the state Senate on Tuesday, it is now law. (In North Carolina, the governor has no veto power over redistricting.)

I’m not from the US so I didn’t understand the importance of these comments. To clarify for others, North Carolina’s Senate is currently Republican majority, and the incumbent governor is Democratic (Roy Cooper). My source is still Wikipedia.

The map is an amended version of Proposal CCJ-1, the less aggressively gerrymandered of the two proposals unveiled by Republicans last week.

If you’re morbidly curious in seeing the other map proposed, it was CBP-5:

ballotpedia.s3.amazonaws.com/…/NC_map_1.png

Look at proposed district 3 😂, it’s another district that was going to be shaped like a bow-tie.

Isoprenoid,

Rule 1, bro.

Isoprenoid, (edited )

I didn’t say this is Lemmy’s shitstain, I said I thought this is Lemmy Shitpost and still think it is, and that this is not Lemmy’s shitstain.

But new shit has come to light, and I’m reconsidering.

Still not saying that this place is a shitstain yet. It could be, but I haven’t confirmed it yet. If you want me to confirm it, then add another insult to injury and click downvote to this post.

Isoprenoid,

Now we have actual written sexual harassment documented in this thread. 🤡

Rules 1 and 5 are being openly broken. Thanks for showing me the dregs of this community.

Isoprenoid,

Just to be clear, I’m not even upset. I work in STEM so seeing this all unfold has only further confirmed and given me more evidence that I was correct in my original assessment of the joke. I’m writing this stuff out in the hopes that others read it and see what is going on.

I’m all good with dark humor. But the punchline is not “sexual harassment is bad”, it’s “Sexual harassment is okay, and it is funny to harass people.”

That’s why, even though it’s fake, the punchline is still “look at this scenario, isn’t doing sexual harassment hilarious? You (the audience) should also do sexual harassment to other people because it’s funny, and people will laugh with you.”

And it’s worked, there is actual sexual harassment in this thread, people have been encouraged to do it because they saw me as an easy target (“stable boy”). They saw that I wasn’t for the joke, so they inserted me as the victim in the original joke. Further, people are upvoting open sexual harassment towards me.

That’s why I don’t really want to be a part of this community, and why I don’t even want to see stuff from this community. If this is what passes as acceptable humor here (the original joke, and then continued poking fun at users), then I don’t want to be a part of it.

We can agree to disagree. Again, not upset, just disappointed.

Isoprenoid,

Because it breaks Rule 1

Refrain from using harmful language pertaining to a protected characteristic: e.g. race, gender, sexuality, disability or religion.

Isoprenoid,

I’m not happy with any of the depicted harassment in the image (fake or not), it just not that funny. If you want to see what happens if you have a descenting opinion though, you can see my massively downvoted post below.

Isoprenoid,

Mate, I’m lighter than a kite. Any apparent anger in my posts is due to your projection.

You need to chill, man.

Isoprenoid,

Then it breaks Rule 5:

No content that harasses members within or outside of the community.

Isoprenoid,

Depends on the reason for the quote. Awareness campaigns quote them as examples of what not to do. There is a clear intention to tell the audience “Watch out for this, avoid it, this is wrong.”

The punchline in this example is an encouragement to harass people because it’s funny.

Isoprenoid,

>>>Edgy 🤣

Isoprenoid,

you could have just said “I’m on the spectrum

That’s rich coming from someone who is anti-social. Stay mad. 🤡
