Lol right? “Right wing politics only seem popular because of bots”. No, left wing politics only seem popular on social media because old people dont use it, despite making up the majority of many populations, and often times are the only people who actually vote in elections.
Some people have feet fetishes but people are still allowed to walk around with their feet out. Some people like armpits and people still show those off. I think just because a group fetishizes something doesn’t mean it needs to be locked away and hidden from children.
Lemmy is a free open source software project. People into FOSS like the idea of something being built by a community to the benefit of everyone and not being controlled by any one person or company who could seek to benfit only themselves. It makes sense that their political ideology mirrors that.
FOSS and just programming and tech in general have an unusually large number of trans people. I’m going to be honest, I’m not exactly sure why. I can only assume because programmers are judged based on their code and not their appearance.
Google is currently defending itself in the US Supreme Court over a lawsuit that alleges they assisted the terrorist group ISIS in recruiting members after it was found the YouTube algorithm promoted ISIS recruiting videos to young men who later committed a terrorist attack.
So to answer your question using Google’s argument: they have so many videos that an advanced search feature is required to make the site usable. Their search feature only suggests things that are popular. It’s not their fault ISIS recruitment (or other violent content) videos are popular.
The counter argument is: Google is curating content by displaying things people didn’t search out themselves. This is direct promotion by Google itself and therefor it should be treated as if they are the publisher of that content. Anyone publishing violent content should be held liable for it.
I’m not a lawyer and haven’t read through the court documents, but from legal commentators it seems that Google provides the general steps for how their algorithms work in plain language for the judges to consider. Even then, the Supreme Court itself has stated they have no clue how technology works so this is difficult for them to rule on
Pharaohs were mummified because they thought their souls would eventually come back to their bodies. Imagine your soul comes back to your body after walking the earth for 10,000 years and you find out someone took that Pepsi you were saving.
Costume consisting of a silver jumpsuit and a lifelike depiction of donair, a giant pita bread stuffed with meat, prompts questions (Leyland Cecco / The Guardian)
In an interview with the CBC in 2015, the owner of a chain of donair shops in Halifax described the addition of lettuce as “sacrilegious”. But in Alberta – the highest per capita consumer of donairs in Canada (and probably the world) – the leafy vegetable has become an essential part of the recipe.
And then there’s me, laughing while eating a shawarma.
This is my thought as well. Lemmy isn’t what everyone is looking for. It’s a free open source software project for creating a decentralized federated network of content aggregators. For most people that sentence doesn’t make any sense nor do they really care. They just want a site they can doom scroll for hours.
The people who choose to use Lemmy are people who care about open source projects, care about decentralization of online platforms, or both. These types of people by their very nature support groups of people coming together collectively to do something big.
A collection of people working together towards a common goal without a strict hierarchy. You could say these people are community focused. Maybe we could call that communityism or something. Where people make rules as a group, or a union you could say. So yeah, no idea where the left lean is coming from.
A classic book with a central theme that remains relevant to this day. I think it gets interpreted far too literally and it has become a meme to suggest any rules you don’t like are exactly like 1984.
The writing at times definitely reminds you it was written by a man in the 1950s though. I remember there being maybe 2 named female characters and only 1 has a decent amount of dialogue and she’s a sex object the main character fantasizes about raping. Definitely doesn’t pass the Bechdel test.
Sometimes it can be hard to tell if we’re chatting with a bot or a real person online, especially as more and more companies turn to this seemingly cheap way of providing customer support. What are some strategies to expose AI?
It was a joke! Specifically referencing Portal like another reply pointed out. In the game this paradox is even used against an AI who just responds “ummm…true, that sounds true”. So even in the game it doesn’t work!
The judge for the Rittenhouse trial said he’ll never again allow cameras in his court due to how skewed and edited the footage was when presented to the public.
Trials are incredibly long and boring so the media cuts and edits things to add drama and entertainment, but that gives a terrible impression to the public about how the trial went.
Also, Hitler gained popularity in Germany after his trial and imprisonment for leading a failed coup attempt thanks to the attention the media gave to it. This is uncomfortably similar.
Feel like we’ve got a lot of tech savvy people here seems like a good place to ask. Basically as a dumb guy that reads the news it seems like everyone that lost their mind (and savings) on crypto just pivoted to AI. In addition to that you’ve got all these people invested in AI companies running around with flashlights under...
AI is nothing like cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrencies didn’t solve any problems. We already use digital currencies and they’re very convenient.
AI has solved many problems we couldn’t solve before and it’s still new. I don’t doubt that AI will change the world. I believe 20 years from now, our society will be as dependent on AI as it is on the internet.
I have personally used it to automate some Excel stuff I do at work. I just described my sheet and what I wanted done and it gave me a block of code that did it. I had spent time previously looking stuff up on forums with no luck. My issue was too specific to my work that nobody seemed to have run into it before. One query to ChatGTP solved my issue perfectly in seconds, and that’s just a new online tool in its infancy.
Funny you mention that! Pepsi literally made this a huge ad campaign in the 80’s. They found that in blind tests between Coke and Pepsi, the vast majority of people picked Pepsi as their favourite, even the people who said they preferred drinking Coke.
Oddly enough, Coke ran a campaign at the same time saying “I picked Coke” and it was a smash hit. Pepsi ended up being meme’d on despite their blind tests showing they were better. It’s great proof that what sells a product isn’t how good the product itself is, but how good its marketing is.
However, political parties that support gun restrictions tend to see declines in their polling numbers, whereas those that support removing restrictions see a boost. Why? Its because anyone saying they’ll remove restrictions instantly wins over 14% of Canadians, but saying you support current restrictions doesn’t instantly win over 85% of Canadians. The 85% that support gun restrictions aren’t single issue voters. The 14% are. They’re not the silent majority, they’re the hive mind who fall in line and act as one.
Ab InBev lost money because they upset the hivemind, not a majority of people.
I have an account on kbin. Recently I saw a post across my feed in which a magazine that I follow (that's based on a Lemmy instance) was celebrating over 1k subscribers. When I visited, I saw only 240 or so....
All platforms on the fediverse communicate using the ActivityPub protocol, but the platforms can have very different setups which makes sharing stuff complicated.
Mastadon and Lemmy are both on the fediverse but if someone on Mastadon “boosts” someone’s post (Mastadon’s version of a retweet) how does Lemmy interpret that? Lemmy doesn’t have boosts. If someone on Lemmy creates a new community for underwater basket weaving, how does Mastadon interpret that information? Mastadon doesn’t have communities (i think? I don’t use it).
So each platform can share the activities their users are doing, but between platforms those activities often don’t exist. I can only assume there are some specific kbin actions which lemmy’s programming isn’t setup to handle and vice versa.
I’d say the same. Looks like OP tried to mimic running text through a translator and getting the wrong homophone. Same thing with “image familiar” instead of “image related”.
I’m sure the ad companies love it but it’s pretty funny. Reminds me of when Animal Crossing and Doom released on the same day. There were lots of memes of Doom Guy tending to his village and Isabelle ripping and tearing demons.
lemmit.online is an instance that is entirely made up of reddit cross-posts. It has one account, a bot, that copies every post made to any subreddits on its list so you can see the content without going to reddit.
I’ve noticed that a few of my comments wouldn’t actually post. The word for when you commit Sudoku (suicide) seems to be on the no-no list. I also wanted to comment about a weapon known by a two letter designation (AK) and that wasn’t allowed either.
Lol I went to see Mission Impossible in theatres recently and it starts with Tom Cruise thanking you for watching movies in the theater and suggesting it’s the best way to watch movies.
The people behind me talked through the whole thing and on the other side of the theatre two people got into an argument because the one person was on their phone the whole time. Ushers had to come in and tell them to be quiet or leave. So yeah, Tom Cruise thinks that’s the best way to watch movies.
Unfortunately I don’t believe artists have any current legal recourse for this and, honestly, I’m not sure they require one.
Legal Eagle has a great review of common legal questions with court judgements on some. The bullet points are that an artist’s style isn’t protected by copyright and training and AI on an artist’s work can be considered fair use.
Asking an AI to draw art that looks like it was done by Greg Rutkowski is no different than asking a human artist to do the same thing. The human artist would look at Rutkowski’s works and do their best to copy the style of it. As long as the artist doesn’t recreate an identical looking piece, it’s not copyright infringement.
If artists could copyright their style it would stifle creativity. Same thing if artists could prevent their work from being used as instructional or reference materials.
Not japanese, but my understanding is that japanese uses a lot of honorifics and their pronouns use them too. So you don’t just say “I” but “I, a humble servant,” or “I, an esteemed gentleman,” or “I, the owner of this establishment,”

I can’t really think of a reason for that as Reddit is hated somewhat equally by “both” sides of the spectrum. It’s just something I find interesting.
