I don’t like so called smartphones (flashy devices to mine your data and other reasons) but my regular no touchscreen phone’s microphone is no longer working as it should, making conversations difficult....
Yes, that is an overreaction. In my opinion, you should take your privacy precautions as far as you wish without significantly affecting your everyday life. Refusing to use your smartphone/not enjoying the experience because you are anxious about the data it is leaking suggests to me that you’ve gone too far down the rabbit hole and need to pull back a bit. There are measures you can take to increase the privacy of your smartphone, even if you can’t install an alternative operating system on it and need to use default Android. No it won’t be as private, but if the alternative is selling/returning this new gift then perhaps sacrificing some of your privacy is worth it (that’s something for you to decide).
The reality is that most people around the world have absolutely zero concern for their privacy and security and get by in life without any issues at all. It’s good to be informed and take precautions where necessary but it is statistically extremely unlikely that you will notice any negative change to your life because you choose to use a regular smartphone. Making choices about your privacy should come from a place of empowerment - you should feel good about them. If you are making choices because you are scared/paranoid, you probably need to take a step back from online communities such as this one. They can be useful sources of information but you can also get easily overwhelmed with information and/or try to change too much, too quickly and end up living and extremely paranoid and limited life. People who do this often then burn out and just give up entirely on their privacy, when a more moderate approach would have actually benefited them more long-term.
Nice for people that need it but I basically only require 2 - 3 extensions for mobile browsing and they were all supported already. There is a lot of overlap and extension redundancy out there. Many people still think they need like 5+ different privacy related extensions, for example, when uBlock Origin can do basically everything (including removing paywalls).
Yeah but I’m asking what the difference is between the extension and adding the extension’s filter list to uBlock. The other person said the extension is “more fully featured” but it doesn’t appear to do much more than circumvent paywalls. It still seems like an unnecessary extension.
Pretty much. Do your thing, talk to people about it if they seem genuinely interested but definitely don’t go around trying to convince people that they need to take their digital privacy more seriously. They will view you as annoying and/or a lunatic and become permanently turned off to the concept. The hard sell isn’t anywhere near as effective as some people think.
From a privacy standpoint, i guess. I want to support open scrobbling with listenbrainz and the account isn’t directly linked to a real acc. Why shouldn’t I/ why don’t you?
I see you conveniently left out the bit where they said people could also just be naive. Kind of funny how you attempted to take the moral high ground and lecture this person like they were a small child, yet you yourself cherrypicked in bad faith just to have some little takedown moment. One of you certainly came off more childish and immature in this exchange and it wasn’t the other guy.
For example, I have been using Google or Apple for 7 years, and seeing that I was fingerprinted, tracked through third-party cookies, etc. I want to switch to a more private option....
Of course. Very few people here would have been privacy conscious when they first started using the internet. There will inevitably be some amount of data available about all of us. The key thing to realise about privacy is that it is generally more about damage limitation/mitigation rather than outright prevention.
The Apple fanboys didn’t like this one. Look at all these rage replies from people who have no idea what they’re talking about. How dare you criticise their favourite anti-consumer corporation?!
I am soon moving out for university and am going to meet a bunch of new folks. But I was wondering how do you go about approaching this with privacy in mind?...
Relationships are way more important than privacy, so I am always open to making sacrifices if it means easier communication. That means keeping a mainstream social media account active (in my country Facebook Messenger is the most popular) and just limiting the data it can collect about me as best I can. Of course it’s not ideal for me, but the alternative would be to cut myself off from the majority of society and that is clearly a worse option.
I have had the same experience with vanilla vs deGoogled Android. The battery life and general performance improvements are noticeable, particularly on older/weaker devices.

Who are they trying to fool here? Any person who is truly aware about privacy
You answered your own question. Most people are still living in the Dark Ages when it comes to privacy awareness and just general tech literacy. To them, Google’s “privacy” features actually sound impressive.
As for why Google bothered to introduce such features: like most things in the mobile world it is about not losing ground to Apple in the features race. Google never cared until Apple introduced their own “privacy” features a few years ago. They know Apple is a dangerous competitor due to its ability to gaslight consumers into thinking it cares about them, so they are attempting to do the same here. It’s all about creating the illusion of being a pro-consumer company.
Some will curse me out for discussing decentralization and freedom. I am NOT saying the average person should be concerned with CIA spying. What I’m saying is that one should promote decentralized internet infrastructures that empower the individual over corrupt institutions, even though this threat model likely does not apply...
That’s just the privacy community. It has always attracted the crazies. Signal is not the only reasonable service that these people will attempt to spread paranoia and misinformation about.
That website is run by an employee of Brave, who rates the privacy of browsers based on their default settings (which Brave tends to perform best in). If browsers prompt the user to select their privacy settings on a first run, he scores them based as if the user had selected the worst privacy options.
If he actually spent a few minutes setting up each browser, as is always recommended within the privacy community, that table will look a lot different. But then Brave wouldn’t stand out as much…

Don’t kill your time. When you’re in the final moments of your life you’ll most likely wish you had more, so make the effort to be thankful for every second you have now.
Since we are in a privacy subreddit, I will say that Fairphone is second only to the Google Pixel in terms of support for privacy focused versions of Android. For privacy specifically, they are a great choice.
That’s not the question. There is no singular reason to buy the Fairphone 5 and a purchase is not necessarily a commitment to a full 8 - 10 years of use. Focusing solely on one aspect of the device, like its modular components or the long-term software support, is missing the bigger picture.
Every Fairphone to date (perhaps not the original) has had support for custom operating systems, on behalf of both the Fairphone developers and community developers at large. The Fairphone 4 is one of the most widely supported modern devices and there is no reason to think this will suddenly change with the 5.
Even if they use it for 5 years and then move to something else, it still offers benefits that very few modern phones have. And it’s still the most ethical by an absolute mile. You don’t need to use a Fairphone for the entire support period for it to become a worthwhile purchase.

microG is optional. Additionally, your claim that “most Android apps require Google services” is unverified and depends heavily on the user and where their apps are sourced.
No, I mean it runs system wide and can block ads and trackers from any application. There are definitely no ads in the OS lol
Normally these ad and tracker blocking apps are detected as a VPN by Android, which means you cannot use a real VPN at the same time. iode’s blocker is unique in this area.
Sorry, I misunderstood what OP was trying to say. I didn’t realise they were talking about feature updates when they mentioned the 5 years. A security patch is still an update to the operating system and evidence of support, so my initial reaction was that they were wrong when they said “5 years of OS support”.
