The Amazon reviews are really bad. If anyone is looking for a book with this same idea, The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined by Steven Pinker is really great.

Thanks for the information, I had no idea that Pinker had such an anti-following. I’ve not read or even thought about him in years. I just vaguely remembered that that book did a lot to make me more thankful for the current state of things compared to how they used to be. I appreciate you letting me know that he is such a questionable fellow.

The main things that stuck in my head after all those years was that stuff like assault, rape, murder, torture, entertainment-based animal abuse all used to be much worse. He said that people used to nail cats to posts around town so they would flail around until they died, just for the hell of it. I never fact-checked these claims.

Yep, use it, love it. I just have a bunch of alerts set up for any new articles that include search phrases in my areas of interest, mainly bioacoustics stuff so I can post any new relevant articles or papers on [email protected]

Imagine a level 0 species that is as much more intelligent and aware than the level 1 species that you listed as the level 1 are from the level 2 animals. For example, maybe level 0 species are capable of trapping level 1 creatures into geographic and economic situations, sometimes even without the level 1 species being aware that this is happening, and limiting the freedom that they otherwise could have had, and preventing them from expressing their natural desire to see and explore as much as they are naturally driven to do. Now imagine a -1 level, -2, -3, etc. Would you be ok with being treated increasingly worse so long as the one doing the abuse was a succifiently high enough intelligence/capability/rank above you? Just because some people really want to trap other animals in little boxes for their own amusement doesn’t mean the animals want it. In almost all cases, if you leave the cage open, even the level 3 and below animals will naturally choose to wonder off and take advantage of their newly acquired right to freedom of movement and exploration.

I think the original position argument is valid here. If you knew that you had a 50/50 chance of being 1)a lifelong pet who will never get to experience the natural freedom that your genes have evolved for over billions of years, or 2)a human with a pet, would you still vote for this pet-having system? Or is your decision to deprive animals of their natural habitat and curiosity just one that you’ve come to after realizing that you are a human who would like to have an extra interesting thing to look at when you are bored?

Last I checked, there is nothing like !digitalbioacoustics on reddit, I briefly ran an animal communication sub there, but abandoned it when I switched over a few months ago. There’s lots of exciting stuff happening at the intersection of AI and animal communication!

Roger Payne introduced much of the world to humpback whale songs and as a result much whale population decline began to reverse. He predicted that this would happen if people could just see that they communicate with each other. This reversal happened despite us being unable to even begin to understand what they were saying to each other.

With this recent explosion of AI technology, leaps and bounds are being made to actually begin to decode the communications of some other animals. This new emerging field is being called Digital Bioacoustics. For instance, a study has just recently come out that elephants call each other by names. I think there is a decent chance that this deeper understanding of animal communication may possibly lead to a paradigm shift in how humans see the other living creatures that we share the planet with, in the very least, I can hope so!

Look around for anything that is baseball shaped and sized and look up a juggling tutorials. Even if you already know the basic pattern, there are tons of tricks that you can start working on right away.

Juggle. You must have 3 similar ball shaped items around the house. There’s lots of tutorials online. You get your blood feeling, body moving. Such a nice rush when you finally get that new pattern or trick you were working on.
