Maybe you could rig something up with retractable badge holders. You might be able to get them for free from your work. https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/b56af822-1b4e-44ac-afa5-0b34a968dc5d.jpeg

Doesn’t CA have it now, also isn’t the NY one effectively gutted?

Oh wow that’s a terrible color code.

Halberds are the pinnacle of melee combat.

For non-English folks, what are some books and other media in your native language you'd recommend to others?

I enjoy challenging myself sometimes to try and read or follow other media in other languages besides English, and although I could skim over bestselling or top/best of lists in other languages, if those are anything like their English contemporaries, I imagine odds are they don’t catch some of the lesser known yet still...

I can second Metro 2033. YouTube has got some audiobooks book versions of it in English, but there’s a whole bunch of noncannon fan books that are only in Russian.

I thought the books and games complimented each other nicely. Both were clearly made in a manner to suit their medium best. And having read/played one shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying the other.

Does a white flag not carry the same connotation in Sudan?

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

There’s probably a lesson in hubris to be found there. I wouldnt be surprised to hear Adolf thought he would succeed where others had failed.

This is like looking at a yet to be made Tom Scott video.

Ask them their stance on apes. If they stay an ape could mess a dude up theyre probably just into martial arts. If they say something racial they are probably racist. And maybe you shouldn’t be friends with them.

To my knowledge the Rogan community is strong advocates of the idea that most other great apes can beat us up.

FireTower,

I often can’t too.

Those appear to be bolt action rifles.

FireTower, (edited )
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

I mean if Russia is still fielding the Mosin in Ukraine I see no reason Myanmar wouldn’t field a bolt action.

FireTower,

Yeah lol I use mobile and do the finger slide typing thing it’s fast but you do occasionally get a funny typo.

FireTower,

Round grenades=throwable. Stick grenades=throwable and you have to carry a big fuck off stick too.

Would you rather have more grenades or have your current grenades come with a stick?

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

They’ve confirmed there won’t be a battlepass. And I’m not going to complain about them offering more content down the road for anyone willing to pay, especially considering it’ll likely get a massive discount at some point.

I’ll take this traditional DLC model over a battle pass model any day.

Torture’s ‘appropriate’ use case is to ask multiple people questions and then compare the results to find commonalities. Torturing one person is essentially useless.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds like Microsoft is trying to engage in champerty as a means of establishing beneficial case law (or avoiding the opposite) because government regulations could devalue their investments in the AI field.

https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/pentagon-buys-starlink-ukraine-statement-2023-06-01/

It would appear he had a DoD contract for the service depending on the actual contract he may be in violation.

That said this sub has a serious war hawk problem. Non-interventionism isn’t some evil philosophy.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

Musk seeking the contract and providing starlink certainly isn’t but the broader concept of not providing a good or service of benefit to one side in a conflict is emblematic of non-interventionism. The most true incarnation of non interventionism in this kind of situation would have been to never get involved in the first place.

I’m in no way implying musk isn’t and idiot without consistent guiding principles or beliefs.

There’s an entire field of shooting sports. The Olympics has shootings events. There’s guns made specifically for specific competitions like PRS & IPSC.

When manufacturers do market guns for the purposes of broadly shooting at other humans it’s more specifically the self defense market. There’s a difference between making a product for self defense and making firearms for drive by shootings.

Additionally you have companies in the industry who specifically created entirely new branches just for training. Here’s a link to Sig Sauer’s training side.

The core issues are not that individuals have the capacity to do ill but the motivation and desire. To meaningfully impact homicides you need to first understand the different motivations behind them and change the system that created poor circumstances.

For example tackling drug related gang violence by changing the laws on drugs so as to not create room in our societies for criminal organizations structured around their illicit trade.

I don’t know which kind of shotgun loading you have in mind but sufficiently effective shotgun loadings (read not bird shot) will 100% penetrate dry wall several times before reaching a not fatal velocity. High mass projectiles maintain course better when flying through materials like dry wall.

A cartridge like .223 which relies on velocity, instead of mass, tends to penetrate walls the least. This is because upon it’s first impact it begins to destabilize, resulting in a faster loss of velocity.

That extrapolation is like saying that someone participates in a fire evac drill is waiting for their house/work/school to burn down.

Being prepared for an emergency situation doesn’t mean you’d want it to happen.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

Yes that’d be it and the primary purpose of firearms training is establishing proficiency in the event one might need to utilize a firearm in self or common defense.

HOA banning dogs on grass - suggestions?

Hi Lemmy, My HOA sent out a email saying dogs are no longer allowed on any grass in common areas or front yards including grass between sidewalk and curb which is… everywhere except our own tiny backyards. The reasoning is some dog urine effected dead spots. Honestly I didn’t even notice them, it’s 95° here and all the...

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

The ideal solution is that HOAs be abolished op lives in a community where 50% of the residents are held to a collective standard they have no say in that’s enforced by those who’s qualifications are they’ve nothing better to do with their time. The idea that HOAs increase property value is a scam.

FireTower,

My understanding is that female refers to the gender while woman refers specifically to an adult of the aforementioned gender. As in you wouldn’t call a 3 year girl a woman and you wouldn’t call a 90 year old woman a girl, as girl carries a diminutive connotation compared to the more apt term woman.

It’s almost like the writing on the wall was trying to tell us something! Amazon is a bloated poorly self-regulated market with a low barrier to entry that prioritizes convenience over quality, while obfuscating the truth of the seller you do business with.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

I second the other commenter just stop using it. I haven’t order anything from Amazon for the better half of a decade. There’s no product worth buying that can’t be found off Amazon.

You have no duty to reward poor practices with your business.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

The issue is if it never occurred to you that you might have been scammed you might not ever think to look.

I built my first computer last year, with all NiB internals, my main concerns when assembling it was does it work. If it underperformed (due to a bootleg part) I might not have been able to appreciate due to a lack of reference point.

This kind of practice is perfect for targeting the person using PC part picker to build a computer without an indepth knowledge or a relative buying it as a gift for someone else.

FireTower,

Since they added it I’ve moved over to revanced which allows you to remove it.

Many searches are useless without including reddit.com

As an example: I was doing a search for the best sesame substitute today. Everything that came up was things like, “11 Best Sesame Substitutes,” and I know for a fact that just about everything they suggested tastes nothing like sesame. Just another site trying to get hits. So I added reddit.com into my search parameters and...

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

The issue isn’t that reddit has all the answers the issue is that search engines like Google show you the websites that have been best optimized for search engines, not the most helpful ones.

Ending searches with ‘reddit’ works because reddit is the largest group of forums on the web & forums typically are full of people knowledgeable on a specific topic that have good answers.

The quality of returned search results IMO has degraded appreciably. When I search the same question as you posted the entire first page of results is long winded listicals. There’s a lot of seemingly helpful & succinct answers in that post you made but no one searching Google will find it if they enter the exact title.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

People on forums like Reddit absolutely can produce their own info. Nowadays it’s more often that those articles are based on posts written on sites like reddit.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

If you have to be convinced something isn’t a scam you should avoid it.

“Annual quotas authorise the killing of 209 fin whales – the second-longest marine mammal after the blue whale – and 217 minke whales, one of the smallest species.”

Sounds like they got a system of wildlife management in place. As long as it’s a controlled harvest with limitations based on the population and the carrying capacity of the area, I don’t really see the issue.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

Flying the drone might be permissible under the open fields doctrine, but stopping people from assembly on their own private residential properties absolutely spits in the face of the “The right of the people peaceably to assemble” clause of the 1A.

Ngl I don’t have faith that Amazon will deliver us a cinematic masterpiece.

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

Play the games you know. If you know when a character is supposed to say “Get to the helicopter now we are leaving!” When you hear them say “Kommen Sie zum Helikopter, jetzt fahren wir los.” you’re more likely to have that 10-20% you wouldn’t otherwise understand click.in your head.

Also I recommend any games set in a region where the language you want to learn is set. This is because all the signs will be in that language.

@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

The first one seems ‘friendlier’ for lack of a better word. I think I have to agree with your conclusion.
