Valve also made a really thought out and well designed product, which I think is pretty rare these days. The instant hibernation feature is just one example of why the Steam Deck is so much better than the competition
It’s really not that hard and there are plenty of guides available. If you are unable to visit the “store” (discovery), download a program and finally run it, then maybe you should just keep using Steam and not complicate things.
I feel like if you are smart enough to know that Heroic Launcher exists then you could figure out how to do a google search on how to install it. It’s not like Windows “just works” every time
No I just think you’re exaggerating the problem and had a bad take on it. In my opinion Steam is harder to install on Windows than Heroic Launcher is to install on SteamOS.
Messing with Proton isn’t required and I am sure most games will figure out how to add a shortcut to Steam.
installing HGL or any other launcher is going to be both inconvenient and require a level of investigation that most people don’t care to bother with when they can just hit “buy” on the store.
This reads to me that think Valve are going to make installing shit harder. I’m arguing that at the moment it’s easy to do and Linux is an open platform. Nothing like a walled garden
Alright, I guess we’ll just agree to disagree. I think Valve has done a fantastic job with the Steam Deck and I love it’s openess. The Steam Deck made me aware of how good Linux has become and is the reason I ditched Windows on my desktop computer
I need to use Microsoft Fonts since I use my Deck as a laptop replacement and I don’t know how to download/install MS Fonts (preferrably MS 10/11). I don’t have a MS image or CD to rip it from there :/
You could set up a development environment using distrobox in an arch container and keep the downgraded packages installed in there if it happens again
That’s like saying driving a sports car is more dangerous than a regular car. In some sense, yes it is, but at the same time it’s not the cars fault that the driver irresponsible.
Based on my experience you can ask for Thai spicy. It also works in Indian restaurants if you ask for Indian spicy. So far I have gotten what I asked for.
My latest experience in my local Indian restaurant resulted in the waiter to double check if we understood what we asked for. Once we got our food he was eyeing us the whole time to see if we would survive haha
According to Hans-Kristian Arntzen, a prominent open-source developer working on Vkd3d, a DirectX 12 to Vulkan translation layer, Starfield is not interacting properly with graphics card drivers.
From my experience on the Steam Deck is doesn’t matter if I run low graphics or medium graphics (some high settings) the performance is almost the same
TSMC says the opening of its Arizona chip factory has been delayed due to a shortage of skilled workers. The company says it needs to bring Taiwanese workers to Arizona to get construction back on track. An Arizona union says US jobs are being threatened — and is urging lawmakers to deny the workers’ visas.
I plan to go these route but to also bring in the Garuda repos and some tweaks they make. I am running Garuda right now and it works really well for gaming and I like some of their scripts, like garuda-update
If you don’t want the themed desktop (KDE) then Garuda KDE lite is great. They also offer other desktop environments that I also think is without the skin
The new SteamOS has good support for touch but unfortunately it has no official release yet. HoloISO should be okey as long as you don’t use Nvidia (because of wayland)
I made this post because I really like the design of GNOME, and although i’d like customizability, it is mostly enough for my everyday needs. But I want to understand why people may choose other desktop environments…or why you would/would’nt use GNOME.
I remember my first time installing Ubuntu as a teenager and the fact that the desktop environment was Gnome made me hate it. At that age and time I wanted something familiar and Windows-like. Since then, 13 years ago, I always hated Gnome (and Ubuntu) and I don’t feel like that is going to change any time soon.
The new SteamOS opened my eyes to KDE Plasma and now I am running Garuda on my main desktop. Eventually I plan to switch to Arch and “make my own distro” or just use SteamOS once it gets official desktop release.
You can use distros like Arch or Debian as a base and install KDE to it as a desktop. Many distros based on Arch or Debian come with a desktop pre-installed. Like KDE. My favorite distro with KDE is Garuda KDE lite (it removes the visuals from regular Garuda). It uses Arch as a base, just like Steam OS and works well for me to game on. Steam OS for desktops is something I think will become popular once the official release from Valve comes.
I can recommend Garuda KDE Lite. I had some problems with pacman keyring being outdated when installing and had to set it up but other than that it works great
The Steam Deck's budget price tag is the reason I still rate it nearly two years on (www.pcgamer.com)
