AstralWeekends,

AnyList. I’ve tried many list apps and this one is easily the best. Not FOSS disclaimer. The free version has very minimal ads, it has a great, intuitive UI, you can create custom list types and item categories, it has built in quantity and unit of measure fields, and you can share/sync a list with others by email address. The amount of features included in the free version is uncommon in the market without getting more harassed by advertisements. I hope it doesn’t change in the future; it’s remained relatively unchanged for the 3 years I’ve been using it!

AstralWeekends,

Living on the wrong street? What does that entail?

AstralWeekends,

What were your savings, if you don’t mind? I managed to get a house priced at 274k this year with only 20k saved, but a really good credit score, and about 100k income between me and my partner.

AstralWeekends,

Nicely done, this is not easy to do!

AstralWeekends,

Made me write SQL updates that had to be run by someone in a different state with pretty much no knowledge of SQL.

AstralWeekends,

Screensaver?

AstralWeekends,

Massive historical significance, miniscule aesthetic value (in the present day). If Egypt had to engage in “interpretive mowing” to emphasize the pyramids, they would also be overlooked by tourists.

AstralWeekends,

I just bought a house in the eastern part of the Midwest in the US. The tax assessment in 2021 for the house was about 193k. In 2023, it’s 275k. That is a 30% increase in 2 years. During those 2 years, nobody lived in the house, and no improvements were made in that time. Neat! My mortgage is still about the same as my rent for a 2br apartment in Oregon earlier this year. I suspect the Midwest is about to start hating Oregonians as much as Oregonians hate Californians soon!

AstralWeekends,

Man, I saw houses in Portland that were smaller than 900 sq ft, did not have central AC, no appliances, and had water damage and wires ripped from the walls above $200k. That’s not the case in all markets, but it is for a great many. Get on Zillow and start looking around as if you were in the market. Ask yourself if you’d be willing to offer some of these asking prices.

AstralWeekends,

I’m living the inverse of your experience right now. Just started a new job that requires 3 days in the office after having worked several years fully remote. I sit next to a full wall-length window and yet am being battered by soul-crushing overhead fluorescents. Time to figure out where the controls to the lights near me live in the breaker. I hear the COO likes all of the lights on so he can “feel like there are more people in the office.” Bully for him.

AstralWeekends,

I like it when a chorus gets built up more on each repetition, either with the addition of more instrumental parts, new harmonies or background vocals, or a beat change that brings up the intensity.

Similarly, I like when that same effect happens within 2 halves of a chorus. Example of one I heard recently is the chorus of the song “Breathing” by ELLEGARDEN. The 2nd half adds a higher vocal harmony + a picked lead guitar line that open up the sound a bit and just give it a nice little emotional boost.

AstralWeekends,

Yeah, that’s one of my favorites too! Got any good examples you like? One of my favs is “Ivory” by Polyphia. It hits right towards the end of the song and always gets me good.

AstralWeekends,

I dig it, cool song!

AstralWeekends,

Classic, it’s a good one.

AstralWeekends,

Oh my god… I get it now, thanks ⭐

AstralWeekends,

NextDNS and similar services basically host the pi-hole on your behalf. Pi-hole setup involves installing packages on a device that will handle your ad content filtering and related network configuration; NextDNS involves getting a URL to copy-paste into your phone, computer, or network’s DNS configuration settings. The latter is far less labor-intensive. The trade-off is that you have less control over how things get blocked. Pi-hole is more of a local solution than NextDNS, but if you don’t want to fuss with the tech and just want to start blocking more ads, go with NextDNS (or similar).

Here is an article that covers info about how to set this up on an Android phone and several private DNS provider options: theupdatebox.com/how-to-enable-private-dns-on-and…

AstralWeekends,

AstralWeekends,

I propose that human greed leads to the corruption of both capitalist and communist systems in actual practice. The difference is that in capitalism, greed is publically encouraged and publically rewarded, while in communism, greed is publically discouraged and privately rewarded. Inequality is present in both practices ostensibly (with few historical exceptions). Whatever economic systems are implemented by humanity, some people are winners and some are losers.

The question of what system is best cannot be settled by only historical anecdotes. Historical record is too biased towards its own context, though we can look at patterns that have emerged through recorded history to try and achieve a more objective understanding; we have to examine a system as it exists right now. We must accept that no system will be exempt from human greed and focus our efforts on policies that fight against it wherever possible. This is not an enlightened centrist position; this is the position of someone who wants to maximize the number of societal winner and minimize the number of losers.

AstralWeekends,

That is a great way of putting it and totally compatible with my view as well. The boundaries of the system dictate the pathways in which greed flows.

18+ What are some of your worst moments in life?

Edit: Im asking because I’m currently going through some serious depression and I’ve been forgetting stuff lately. I wake up every morning with a panic attack, I am too tired to do anything. I barely had any appetite to eat. I just wanted to see if I’m the only one. Hearing stories from others makes me feel less alone....

AstralWeekends,
  • The night I had to put down my cat (he was the best boy).
  • Dealing with the aftermath of a family member’s suicide.
  • The day my twin first moved far away from me.
  • The death of my grandmother.
  • The time I was hospitalized against my will for a mental health issue.
  • The first panic attack I experienced and the subsequent fallout.

All said, I have lived a pretty lucky life and am a successful person (by my account). But even so, life is full of this type of stuff for pretty much everyone. Fun question, OP!

AstralWeekends,

In my case, I only stayed for one night and left the next day. It was an acute ward, meaning that it was intended for people having immediate mental health crisis. The hospital and staff were all fine. I had gone in for an evaluation at my doctor’s recommendation in the morning. I spoke with a doctor there, who brought a police officer into the room at the end of our conversation, who told me I could either check myself into the hospital or spend the night in jail. I opted for the more comfortable of the two options. To be released the next day, I had to convince the doctors that I wasn’t an active threat to myself or others.

The experience overall did further damage to my mental health and trust in the medical system. At the time, I was having thoughts of suicide without the intention of acting on them; they were just becoming more intrusive. I was honest about this with the hospital staff and I believe now that was a mistake. This was many years ago and I am in a healthier place these days, but it took awhile to get here and I doubt I’ll ever speak as honestly with a mental health professional again.

AstralWeekends,

It really is gut-wrenchingly hard! I have lots of good mementos of him and (sorry if this is creepy) have kept his ashes. I went on a months-long roadtrip/move earlier this year and his urn was along for the ride. He hated the car, lol.

AstralWeekends,

Indeed, was quite a shock! This was in the US, state of Nebraska, about 15 years ago.

Thanks for the kind words. 0/10 experience, do not recommend.

AstralWeekends,

Tough to choose, but I think it would be interesting to see what the heck was going on with the dancing plague of 1518.

AstralWeekends,

I have been using Calyx for the past few months, which is a 1 year pre-paid connection through the T-Mobile network for $750 the first year. No data caps, have used it in the Southwest, South Central, and Midwest parts of the country with fairly good results. I measure up/down occasionally and get anywhere from 30Mbps - 250 Mbps up / 1 - 25 Mbps down. Lots of variety in the signal based on location and time of day, which is my main complaint, but it should be expected with a mobile data connection. Not fancy, but I go through a lot of data at my job and generally don’t have much problems streaming video.

To be honest, I will probably try to switch over to a fiber connection when my year is up because I’m not longer working from the road, but it really hasn’t been the worst solution by far.

AstralWeekends,

Not when every response is a 503 (taps head)!

AstralWeekends,

Exactly. If you’re someone who engages in piracy, you should be quite used to putting in this type of effort.

AstralWeekends,

Can find some great deals at thrift shops if you’re not too picky about resolution!

AstralWeekends,

Which, in a way, means they failed at failing!

AstralWeekends,

Completely agree with your suggestion for handling this issue. This is something I’ve experienced most of my life as well and have only started realizing it at work the past few years. As I started working on more complicated subjects with a lot of room for ambiguity and error, I really have to make sure and qualify what I know for certain and what is more speculation in my work conversations.

AstralWeekends,

(Well, I must say, you mentioned you’re not a native English speaker, but you could fool anyone because your English is crazy good - what is your native language?)

I agree, it’s a real strength and something you can learn to control and use when you need it. It has definitely led to burnout situations for me in the past. For me, I think that comes from wanting to meet the expectations I feel I’ve set, but I’ve struggled to differentiate between expectations that I’m setting for myself vs. what others actually expect. My entire life I’ve worked harder than needed, most likely. Does this sound familiar to you? It’s definitely led to some success for me that I don’t feel is really deserved, but I’m learning to be a little more grateful for it these days :)

AstralWeekends,

I’m significantly overweight and agree with this.

AstralWeekends,

Lori Denae - 16 monthly listeners. Kinda Wanna is a great song.

Maida Rose - 1,192 monthly listeners. Harmony of Heartache is great too!

AstralWeekends,

Are you in Switzerland? Another commenter was mentioning a wool shop with no customers that seemed like a front, lol.

AstralWeekends,

My dude that is Stevie Wonder, not Ray Charles.

AstralWeekends,

Disgusting.

AstralWeekends,

The problem in the US is that increasing productivity among individuals is not scaling evenly with increasing benefits for individuals. So despite the success of large scale agriculture or the efficiency offered by computers, it feels like “productivity for productivity’s sake” at best or “productivity for the wealthiest individuals’ sake” at worst. It is not productive for me to work harder at my job because it does not translate to any tangible benefit for me, my family, or my community. To me, this is what makes “productivity” feel like an abstract concept.

AstralWeekends,

Wow, surprised that I hadn’t heard of THIS vulnerability that previously existed: electrek.co/…/tesla-hack-control-over-entire-flee…

Pretty wild stuff, and that was 6 years ago!

AstralWeekends,

One time, the apartment complex I was living at said I was violating my lease for keeping a storage container on my balcony. It was a small, zip up greenhouse with plants in it, which they allowed. When I confronted them about it, they admitted that they only observed it from the ground (I was on the 3rd floor) and that it was fine after all. That “violation” still appears on my rental history today, as the next apartment I rented asked me to explain why there was a violation on my file. Fuck this system.

AstralWeekends,

Apparently so. I was quite surprised by that as well. I imagine it’s a service or something that large property management companies use, which seems rather intrusive to me. My experience after renting 6 different apartments in the US across 3 different states is that there are too few protections and options for recourse for tenants. I am a good tenant, in my opinion. I pay my rent on time and do not draw any complaints from my neighbors.

I am currently living in an apartment in Indiana, where I was recently without working plumbing for 5 days. As far as I can tell, there is no way for me to recoup related costs or break the release without involving a lawyer. I reported the details to the city health department, which is as close as I can get to getting the incident on the “permanent record” of the property management company.

AstralWeekends,

My fellow Lemmy-ite, let me introduce you to the concept of corporate collusion:

reuters.com/…/fight-is-control-realpage-antitrust…

Here is a recent and ongoing example of how software services can be used (allegedly) by property management companies to avoid competition for the benefit of all (property management companies).

AstralWeekends,

You’re right, not all landlords - you are not the problem, large corporate landlords are the problem. Don’t all landlords get gifted a corporation after their first 90 days or something?

I noticed my car had been keyed this morning. How should I go about fixing it?

I’m pretty sure this happened away from home and I’m just now noticing. The scratch is really deep hitting the metal in the deepest part. I have full coverage but I’m worried a claim will raise my insurance too much to be worth it. I’ve wrenched on cars before but never painted anything because it scares me....

AstralWeekends,

Yes, I had this happen to me last year. Insurance covered it under comprehensive, no noticeable change to my insurance rate.

AstralWeekends,

I hope those are soap bubbles.

AstralWeekends,

(greaser response) “Tell me more, tell me more, does she ghost all your calls?”
