As I use bash basically for everything, I wanted my prompt to be as basic as possible (No newlines, fixed format) and compatible across my PC, Laptop as well as server and Pi via SSH.
Therefore, it’s a simple __prompt_command function in my .bashrc (nearly) everywhere.
It’s structured as:

  1. Terminal/TTY number in orange
  2. Username in green (for roots .bashrc it’s red)
  3. Hostname in green
  4. Current working dir in blue
  5. Current git branch in yellow (if in a git repo)
  6. Exit code in red (if not 0)

Looks like this: 1000011281

I used some prompt generator to get the variables and colors right, and then wrapped parts in if-then where needed.

Probably Debian. It’s basically the most used distro, and therefore has many online resources.

  • Old software, but very stable.
  • No bloat, very clean.
  • No custom programs interfering with any configurations etc.
  • Support for many server software etc.

If you want an even cleaner OS, where (nearly) everything is under your control and as lightweight as possible, Arch would be for you. There’s the bonus of the AUR, but the huge problem of newest, “unstable” software, though I’ve yet to experience any problem on testing repos, except for the Nvidia drivers. In general, Debian should be enough of lightweightiness and control.

And it needs even less memory than Electron, even if it runs as an own instance with a different profile! I replaced Discord with it a year ago and it’s much better in literally every way. I just wish there would be a FF alternative for Electron.

I only ever got problems with my Arch install on my main PC (testing repos, updated every boot/shutdown) once, when NVidia drivers updated. On my servers, also Arch and testing repos, but updated monthly, there never were any problems.

In contrast, Ubuntu/Pop stopped booting properly after a year or so, and due to the more closed, out of the box and undocumented nature (while one knows their Arch system to the single package if one installs it themselves) it was nearly impossible to debug.

Ich sehe Werbung höchstens nur noch im echten Leben. Und da eigentlich auch kaum, immerhin lebe ich nicht in der Stadt, mit zig Geschäften etc. vor der Tür.

I only use lf in foot to have a preview of a file (image, text, pdf, ssl cert, everything with sixels, cat or the specific command) without opening or searching for that file first. It’s faster to just use lf to search for a file instead of opening every single one. Other than that I find using xdg-open, cp, mv, rm etc. is faster compared to using any file manager, probably because I never learnt lf’s shortcuts properly. All GUI file managers I know are bound to their DE, eg. dolphin and nautilus, which sucks with a WM.

The reason for Android's Notification system being better than iOS, is solely due to the ability to turn off individual aspects of an application's notifications.

Google, the poor multi-billion dollar scrappy startup that maintains Android, made a payment app that has one notification setting, "Google Pay". So all the ads, promotions, everything.

3rd party apps like PhonePe & Paytm have a better system.

How do you manage to maintain this OS?

And in contrast to iOS there’s eg. AutoNotification. So even with some very bad and intrusive apps, like my App tracking me driving and giving discounts if I’m good, that don’t allow such fine settings and refuse to work without all notifications on, you can just block specific ones. In my case it’s things like status information, reminders etc.

The worst thing IMO is the apparent lack of custom Rom support. The latest to still support it would be the Edge 30. Using an Edge 20, it’s more than enough for me. It took a long time to roll out Android 13, but for that they integrated their (non intrusive and actually useful) apps very well.

Das blöde an KeePass ist eigentlich, dass es kein Platform übergreifendes Program mit genug Unterstützung für alles gibt. KeePass bzw. KeePass2 kann mit Plugins auch sftp/ftp und angenehmer auch Google Drive etc., aber sieht halt nicht gut aus und hat wenige features. KeePassXC hat zB. ein natives Browser Plugin, aber gar keinen Support für Internetquellen. Aber weil Linux nun mal Linux ist, mounte ich einfach immer meinen Pi mit rsync. Am Handy geht KeePass2Android perfekt.
Vorteil: Man vertraut nicht auf irgendeiner Firma, mit eventuellen Datenlecks etc., sondern zB. Google Drive, welches die Datei nur komplett verschlüsselt ohne Keyfile hat. In meinem Fall ist der Schwachpunkt Vodafone.

Theoretically, politics is defined as anything where decisions are made to solve conflicts. However, this is ‘broad politics’. A much more common interpretation of politics adds the requirement of it not only being a single, but regular occurrence or rather the main job of someone. Ergo, politicians of a country, or part of it, and their decisions .

Replying “everything is politics” to someone expressing they do not want to talk about politics is like telling someone their offspring cannot be called “kid” anymore as they are over 18 now, after a mother cried that their “kid died of cancer”. It’s technically correct, but you’re a major annoying asshole or just plain stupid to persist on the meaning that was not intended.
As I do not believe there are that many people with a room temperature IQ, in C, or maybe autistic people for that matter, which of course are not responsible, only one explanation remains. If you, or anyone else repeating this pattern, is not an asshole, they should just shut up, or argue for politics if they really want to discuss this topic. A much better solution would be to move to politics only instances tho.
