Anyone familiar with previous studies on #laughter in written online communication?Everything from emoji (😂) to textual representation of laughter sounds (haha)! All I can find examines (co-present) laughter almost exclusively as a by-product of humour. Thank you! #academicchatter#academicmastodon@linguistics@academicchatter
Controversial #academic opinion:
Search committees shouldn’t request letters of recommendation from candidates until the phone interview stage, at the earliest. Take the pressure off of the candidates, their mentors, and the committee members. #academia#academicchatter#academicmastodon@academicchatter
@beatnikprof@academicchatter ...and even if you ask letters, the goal should really be only that of knowing about undetectable potential issues with the candidate, not to use the to assign points on any scale - way too arbitrary!
@beatnikprof@academicchatter yes indeed. It is a large burden to prepare recommendation letters for each position considering that the "success rate" is really low.
Request of contacts of the recommending persons is also a viable solution.
I just came out of the meeting for my faculty activity report and was thanked for my resilience. 🤦♂️ Anyone who participated in yesterday’s conversation will recognize the deep deep ironic cut. #academia#academicchatter#academicmastodon@academicchatter
Proudest achievement of the year: I've managed to take almost all my leave in 2023, with only 3.5 days unused. Keeping them in case of a parenting or other emergency.
This line in Barbara Baig's writing book triggered a memory: "most adults are very self-conscious about learning anything new."
Years ago I took an ink painting class at my local arts center. A middle-aged woman cried because she wasn't immediately good at it. To me this is a convincing case for #ungrading.
@AlexSanterne@academicchatter I see that according to the article, Mastodon is the most popular alternative. They also link to an article on how to migrate to Mastodon.
LinkedIn was # 2 which makes sense I guess, but not my favourite.
@josh@academicchatter I think this is an excellent statement. I especially love the citation format. This was a debate point at our institution (that there is no established citation format).
@josh@academicchatter I think it's entirely reasonable. You're allowing people to use the tools as they see fit, providing the guidance that you don't think they will be useful and making clear that you need to see what their own contribution is. I can't think of anything that it lacks.
last week I learned friday afternoons are a great day for bookstore browsing because so few people are there, making it safer for covid cautious shorties like myself
Update on the National Science Foundation (#NSF) stance on #AI in review and proposal writing.
"A key observation for reviewers is that sharing proposal information with generative AI technology via the open internet violates the confidentiality and integrity principles of NSF's merit review process."
