I have the feeling that this paper is motivating even more to quit #X than all 's decisions over one year.

So many of my colleagues are now joining other social networks... 🤣

R.I.P. #X

"Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst and uncertainty"

@AlexSanterne @academicchatter I see that according to the article, Mastodon is the most popular alternative. They also link to an article on how to migrate to Mastodon.

LinkedIn was # 2 which makes sense I guess, but not my favourite.

@grimpen @AlexSanterne @academicchatter let’s be clear - the fediverse is more than mastodon.

@AlexSanterne @academicchatter And how many of them are moving to a platform which is, irrespective of any declaimed differences of principle, based on the identical model: opaque, VC funded, ultimately responsible only to whoever holds the most shares?

AlexSanterne,

@pieist @academicchatter I see many moving to BlueSky... which will end up to be just like Twitter.

We’ll see. If sky drops blocking and especially when the Nazis flood in when Xitter unravels.

It is possible it stays afloat as a vanity project of bots all groveling before Musk

@AlexSanterne @pieist @academicchatter Hmm, I haven't sought out a Bluesky account, just heard about it in passing. Does it actually have multiple instances, or is that just promised Real Soon Now? Do they cede any control to a centralized authority?

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@emurphy @pieist @academicchatter As far as I tested it, there might be several instances, but I have no ideas how to see them.
BlueSky was developed by one of the co-founder of Twitter, so it's really a back-up copy of Twitter v0.9 (there are no emoji, no hahstag, no GIF, no whatsoever).

Well, for the emoji, you can add them from your own system, but there is no direct link to them.

@AlexSanterne @academicchatter He’s currently asking journalists etc to remain because they (he says) will make more money being on his X. This is the guy who paid Andrew Tate around $20k, and a smaller sum to an up-front anti-Semitic Nazi. Do scientists and journalists really want their presence in such company to be their legacy? I doubt it.

@harriettmb @AlexSanterne @academicchatter I opened the site for the first time in a while and got an ad saying I could get a share of ad revenue if I sign up for a premium account 🤔 Smells like desperation
