Hey!

I am a PhD candidate in Tartu, searching for the imprints of dynamical friction in different environments, and how through this there might be a possibility to constrain the properties of dark matter and other dynamics in galaxies. Supervised by Rain Kipper.

I am very interested in galactic dynamics, computational astronomy and lately I am exploring superbubbles in NGC628 as seen by JWST-MIRI.

Hey @kateriniovi, welcome to Mastodon and the Fediverse 👋

You might also add @academicchatter and @astrophysics groups to your followings and cc'ed them for a broader diffusion.

The ’s is perturbed by activites. One of the easiest things to do towards is to cut air travels. Thus, 4 years ago, I cut my frequent flyer cards and decided to , using only low- travel means such as .

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@franzi @StayGrounded_net yeah, I fully agree. I am not even considering it the plane option for my travels. If I can’t go by low-carbon means, mainly train, I am not going.

I have already declined invited keynote presentations to large international conferences because it was impossible for me to go by train.

@anuckols @StayGrounded_net @labos1point5 @academicchatter wow, 11 years, that’s awesome! Huge congrats

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@KiwiskiNZ @StayGrounded_net @labos1point5 @academicchatter thanks. I acknowledge it is way easier in Europe with a quite decent train network (could be better of course), compared to an island like NZ.

Congrats too…

@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@Sarahw @StayGrounded_net @labos1point5 @academicchatter agreed, especially with respect to low-cost flights, which should be completely banned.

Very proud to have contributed to the #paper led by Tamara Ben-Ari et al. from @labos1point5 analysing the ~ 130 000 #academic #travels from ~160 #research units in #France over 2019 and discussing their #carbon emissions. Most importantly, the paper reports various #mitigation strategies and quantify their potential for reducing their #CarbonFootprint.

Mitigation potential of modal shift from plane to train as a function of distance. Vertical lines correspond to median time travel by train and rectangles express the uncertainty related to train speed, with 150 km/h±60 km/h. The three numbers indicate key routes in France with 1: Paris-Toulouse, 2. Paris-Montpellier and 3. Paris-Nice, contributing respectively to 14%, 7% and 16% of total domestic GHG emission from air travel.
Percentage of total (plane, train, car) travel-induced GHG reductions from single or combined options. Colors represent the intensity in GHG mitigation potential with yellow options offering the greatest potential. Each column corresponds to a specific modal shift policy, characterized by a threshold distance(and average travel time), below which a complete shift from plane to train is assumed. Modal shift options are always applied first. Each line corresponds to a specific air travel moderation policy applied at research unit scale. Moderation options are expressed in missions (equivalent to a round trip) and modal shift are considered per segment (equivalent to a one way trip). Options which correspond to actual per-capita per-year research unit median are presented at the third modality in each moderation option (i.e.,1 conference every 3yrs, 1 trip every 4 years, 5,800 km and 1 trip per yr).

"Saying NO !" decision tree for

I just found this awesome flow chart providing an accurate decision tree on when and how to say at work.

I'm gonna print it and stick it on my office door !

@olimould @academicchatter A couple days ago I saw another one, no as complete as this one, but with another box saying "Am I the only one that could do this ?". Of course, if the answer is "No", it leads to a rejection.

I can't find this chart again ...

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@mattkenworthy @academicchatter Agreed. My "trusted mentor" is saying YES to everything. 🙄

She is no longer. Following this chart, hopefully in a bit of time, I will be able to do some science again. 🤯

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@jaztrophysicist @academicchatter I like this one too...

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@wolfgangcramer @jaztrophysicist @academicchatter I fully agree this decision tree is a bit selfish. Review is clearly an issue in this flow chart, but that's another debate (related to incremental papers, etc...).

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@mike @olimould @academicchatter Only if the 2 folks have seen the chart 😅

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@academicchatter @gbosslet today I got an invitation to be in another committee.

I checked the decision tree on my door

Damned, it’s green

Answered positively (after getting the guarantee of reasonable time commitment)

In previous years, I've invited my undergrads to post to Tw*tter during my class sessions, as an alternate way to participate and as a shared (and public) backchannel adding extra digital materials to our conversations.

This year, for obvious reasons, that's impossible, so I'm asking them to do so via Mastodon (which none of my students have used before).

It'll be a little experiement. Let's see whether gets any use from my students.

In case you don't know Valérie, she is a #climate #scientist and previously co-chair of the #IPCC WG1.

Warm (but not too warm😉 ) welcome here @valmasdel 👋

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@emurphy @pieist @academicchatter As far as I tested it, there might be several instances, but I have no ideas how to see them.
BlueSky was developed by one of the co-founder of Twitter, so it's really a back-up copy of Twitter v0.9 (there are no emoji, no hahstag, no GIF, no whatsoever).

Well, for the emoji, you can add them from your own system, but there is no direct link to them.

The #1 choice is Mastodon!

Let's reach out to all our scientist (and non-scientist) friends and acquaintances and encourage them to join the Fediverse. If you still have an account on twitter, post some messages there with links to the Mastodon signup site. Let's welcome them here and provide some gentle hints on how to be productive here.

@AkaSci @wolfgangcramer that’s what I am doing there, but the colleagues with tens of thousands of followers don’t want to lose their “influence”.

It seems the followers “score” is more important than the plateform ethics.

But I concur with the proposed method.
