My fly-on-the-wall observations on AI and higher education (at least teaching and learning) is that most universities really do not know what to do. Many do not have integrated policies. Most professors don't really know what it is about.

Profs need training, procedural and pedagogical. Universities should be spearheading the response. However, that is not what I see.

More disinvestment in education in Ontario.

An independent panel finds the Ford government cut investment in universities and colleges. Ontario spends only 57% per student of what other provinces spend. The province would have to spend $4B/year just to reach the country's average.

'The government muzzled the panelists from speaking about the rationale behind their recommendations.'

Thankful to BRAC University Institute of Educational Development students that I guest lectured today for providing a glimmer of hope.

We discussed research questions and design and how to use research, even in the most incremental ways for public good.

It is a gift to teach.

College for intergenerational mobility provides another perspective with which to champion higher education: "The deep inequity of the anti-college movement," Jose Luis Alvarado (The Hill, 10/28/23): https://thehill.com/opinion/congress-blog/4281108-the-deep-inequity-of-the-anti-college-movement

We have looked to MOOCs, OERs, open access publications, and online education generally to widen access to higher education for those disadvantaged by the digital divide as well as for learners worldwide who are not affluent enough to access f2f higher education.

Although Dr. Alvarado's article is closer to my experience than you'd imagine, I relied upon the merits of millenia of academia for a series on the academic life, including "The Idea of the University"; download from: https://hcommons.org/deposits/download/hc:26460/CONTENT/academic_life_series.pdf

Comments on Dr. Alvarado's article or the above?

A good news story.

'The University of Toronto is the latest Canadian university to announce it’ll be covering tuition for First Nation students whose community’s traditional territory is on or near campus. This move is...popping up across Canada and the U.S...University of Waterloo and Kwantlen Polytechnic University made similar announcements.'

It can be seen as 'an act of meaningful reconciliation.'

It is surprising to me that colleges desperate for enrollment aren't doing everything they can to build actual relationships with students, not transactions masquerading as relationship. Creating pathways for soft exits when adult students have to leave (unexpectedly) mid-term/semester would be a start. Any schools you know doing this?

Can anyone recommend any particularly good research / articles that explain why sending interview candidates the questions you are going to ask them in advance of the interview is a good thing to do? Particularly in higher education (but anywhere will do)? Thanks!

During the #EAA2023 in Belfast we gave a workshop on Agent-Based Modeling for Archaeologists as part of an @EUErasmusPlus project. Saxion works with Leiden University, Aarhus University and Landward Research on this.

I really joined seeing the interested participants working diligently through our tutorials, as well as some interesting discussions on #ABM

It was rewarding and fun at the same for time.

@mguhlin In Bilingualism classes in Japan, I can require students to show what they have learned from this class, which is based on reliable research, and to discuss their own experiences in summary, reflection, and response papers. In such ways I can discern how much of students' writing is their own thinking and analyzing. Findings from the discipline of bilingualism are dwarfed by the amount of common misconceptions about bilingualism, which would presumably be reflected in AI databases, from blogs and such sources in Japanese, where students find mostly stereotypical, anecdotal, or prejudiced information for papers, despite my warnings to use reliable sources. I am wondering how applicable this approach could be for other subject matter areas.

@mguhlin @Bilingualism @edutooter @linguistics

Among the limitations are that the English is too much and too difficult for L2 learners in most academic sources, such as journals. When students use automatic translation, they have probably thought about the content in Japanese, but they can paste the auto-translated English into papers without fulfilling the language-driven mandate to balance the content-driven approach. I do not believe in content-based EFL as a pretext to mask a language-driven agenda, since the students are enriched by the transferable knowledge they gain in L1 as well as in L2.

Writing reflects thinking, so I discourage writing and speaking that relies on machine translation or AI. The result might be obvious, but we cannot accuse and police students.

How can we promote authenticity in such an age?

True. All my syllabi are typically >10 pages long.

The writing was on the wall once universities starting treating syllabi like contracts rather than pedagogical tools.
