Boosting this for @academicchatter: friends, a question: I've been asked to peer review a book manuscript and offered an "honorarium in books". I don't work for for profit companies for free so I'm not doing it. They have also asked me to recommend other potential reviewers if I can't do it. I'm on the fence as to whether to do that because, again, they'll be asking for free labour. What are your thoughts?

@elmyra @academicchatter their request sounds like a line that recruiters often include in unsolicited messages: "if you aren't interested, please pass this on to anyone else you know who might be", which reads to me as "please save me the effort of spamming even more people by making yourself the spammer".

Sending it to somebody else might be interpreted as an endorsement of the system, so were I in your position, I wouldn't recommend other people to them.

@josh @academicchatter I think it's entirely reasonable. You're allowing people to use the tools as they see fit, providing the guidance that you don't think they will be useful and making clear that you need to see what their own contribution is. I can't think of anything that it lacks.
