Update on the National Science Foundation () stance on in review and proposal writing.

"A key observation for reviewers is that sharing proposal information with generative AI technology via the open internet violates the confidentiality and integrity principles of NSF's merit review process."

👌 Academic and small business owner here. This couldn't be more on point.

Academics lack key business skills which I argue are required even within #academia but are never taught with systemic management dysfunction as a result.

One of the weirdest experience in this social media ecology was to receive an email today from the research hub of a faculty announcing they've joined and inviting all of us to follow them there. They specified you need a code link. But they have none.

A university hub. In an exclusive social media club. I have no words (which is very, very rare).

Hello and
I have a question for you (which might sound a bit provocative, but it's an actual genuine question).

What is really the value of Auto-ethnography?

I notice a new trend in some PhD group chat (Humanities) of students resorting to this method for their research. I'm personally puzzled, because beyond some reflexivity, how can a n=1 sample being any representative? Also, isn't it a very individualistic take on research?

How are services adjusting for the decline of , especially ? Are they giving Twitter mentions less weight? Are they tracking mentions in other social-media platforms? If so, which platforms? Where do they think academics are going? Do they have good data?

Reading length is ca. 15 min.

Responding to a post I saw from someone on the -
I don’t care what your associate dean or department chair tells you: you have to rest. Not half-hour cat nap. Rest for a whole day. You need to do what you like. You need to walk in fresh air. You need to see friends and family. In the long run, it will help you, particularly in the final stretch.

I'm preparing my CV for a tenure track application and stepping through all my publications brings back so many memories.

The friends made, the fieldwork stories, the places visited, the teaching, the disappointment and frustration, the parties after (or before) things were finished.

I think I managed to do a lot of good science while having fun at it. I has been a privilege, which I hope to pay forward.

Question for my fellow academics:

How many concurrent projects is a comfortable number for you (i.e., allows you to work without feeling rushed)?

And what is the optimal number of meetings a day (i.e., that allows you to move things along, but also leaves you enough time for other things)?

To those wondering how my Halloween Pavlovian toss the students a candy bar when they speak experiment went: pretty much the same in both classes.
First 2 students were all “what is going on?” w/ 1 even doing the Pip from LoTR gazing up into the Heavens. The 3rd student then tested the theory that talking generated candy. Once that proved successful, the floodgates opened up.

Trying a Pavlovian experiment with my students today. I will toss a candy bar to anyone who speaks. Let’s see if they catch on and if this will encourage greater class participation.

College for intergenerational mobility provides another perspective with which to champion higher education: "The deep inequity of the anti-college movement," Jose Luis Alvarado (The Hill, 10/28/23): https://thehill.com/opinion/congress-blog/4281108-the-deep-inequity-of-the-anti-college-movement

We have looked to MOOCs, OERs, open access publications, and online education generally to widen access to higher education for those disadvantaged by the digital divide as well as for learners worldwide who are not affluent enough to access f2f higher education.

Although Dr. Alvarado's article is closer to my experience than you'd imagine, I relied upon the merits of millenia of academia for a series on the academic life, including "The Idea of the University"; download from: https://hcommons.org/deposits/download/hc:26460/CONTENT/academic_life_series.pdf

Comments on Dr. Alvarado's article or the above?

Things I didn't realize about the :

(This will be a very long list by the end of the year if I keep it up. We'll see.)

  1. Your statements are basically done after the first few deadlines. I always thought I'd customize extensively for each school.

Nope.

On a week like this (with so many apps due Sep 15), you just don't have time. You have to trust that you already put in the work with your base template. It's a mental shift from fellowship apps.

18b) If I had to take a stab at thinking through what might have helped:

-Limit feedback on your first practice job talk. You don't need everyone's advice all at once; you need a manageable amount.

-Spend time with friends who genuinely hype you up. There's never enough time but getting outside of your own head is important.
