I post quite a bit from CBC as well, also The Tyee when they put out relevant articles. As to why I use Winnipeg Free Press, it’s reputable and Canadian owned, plus I’m a subscriber. When I first started sharing news on lemmy, it was pretty CBC heavy which people were complaining about. So I was trying to find alternate sources which were not American owned (read: Postmedia) to mix things up a bit.
I’ve been enjoying the app and the community quite a bunch! However I do notice that the feed is starting to fill up with lots of negative sentiment....
I’m not sure if we agree about the meaning of my post. My comment/question was more about the Lemmy feed. Nobody is arguing that the news is full of negativity (it sells) and I don’t think I was making comments about people’s common sense or anything else related to society.
My feed is pretty vanilla, few filters. And in the last 2 weeks I noticed that a lot of what drips into my feed is based on negative sentiment. Something that is inherit to news maybe, but I figured Lemmy was more about communities than it is about news articles. I don’t think this topic is too vague to put a finger on, but perhaps my post has some of that same sentiment included; making it seem like a complaint too much.
I don’t follow news because it’s bad for my mental health, so I don’t see the examples you listed. But I do think the initial halo-effect of “all the cool people from Reddit who truly cared about the community are now on Lemmy” is slowly fading as people are settling in more.
i dont remember which but some lemmy apps have word filters for posts so it could be very practical for you.
I think liftoff was one of them but i am not really sure
I know that posts like this annoy people like you that are fed up but some of us others like every piece of humilation that our ex has and realistically we wont stop to post some news from time to time so to block the content looks like a good option to me
To an extent. But whenever there is a political discussion on Hacker News, the lib right response is very, very loud, and I try to remind myself I appreciate Hacker News for its tech news.
I think the culture is just different. Lemmy was started and run by Tankies. Hacker News was started by Y Combinator, which incubates silicon valley startups. They're going to attract different audiences, or at least different groups of people who will put up with different politics. I can't claim to be particularly upset about the .ml domains being pulled and the center mass of Lemmy moving away from those instances.
Thankk you. The Overton window has been forcibly molded to what would’ve been the mid- Right when I was a kid growing up (90s-00s). This is because of Fox News. And then social media propagandists have tried ripping it to the extreme right, aka alt-right.
I imagine a lot of what younger people think of as left/liberal was very much a moderate view point just a generation ago.
So when you move to a new medium not propagandized yet (or at least a new venue like Lemmy) you might find that organic discourse is a lot more sane, tempered, and moderate.
looks like rendering adblockers extensions obsolete with manifest-v3 was not enough so now they try to implement DRM into the browser giving the ability to any website to refuse traffic to you if you don’t run a complaint browser ( cough…firefox )...

I caught myself loads of times scrolling on Reddit while not even paying attention, or while scrolling on Reddit to then close it immediately opening Reddit again to continue scrolling....
I actually find myself spending more time here, to the point to where I might have to take a break because it's starting to become unhealthy.
I think the reason why is since there are less posts per volume, it's easier to read through everything. Since the communities are smaller, the news and discussion is more focused. And because a lot of the more tech savy and activist minded individuals made the switch over to lemmy, I find it easier to have more nuanced conversation than on reddit.
However some of my bad habits from reddit are starting to resurface here, and I probably need to start regulating my time here. At the very least, I feel like I get a lot more out of my time and participation here.
I’d like for kbin/Lemmy to be a full substitute, but right now only meme subs on lemmy are taking off or getting significant traction. It’s actually sort of annoying and makes me not want to bother. Apps are rough, block tools are inconsistent, see tons of posts twice or more all day (would happen on Reddit too, but pretty rarely, when big news was relevant to several large subreddits). Until the smaller subs I frequented Reddit for in the first place start coming over, kbin/lemmy can’t realistically be a replacement. Just something I check for a few minutes to try to leave app feedback and contribute traffic where I can.
It will take a very good app and a couple more high profile niche subs (like /r/piracy) mostly shifting to the Fediverse to start a real migration.
((Figured this belonged in here, not sure why this place isn't showing up as an option for new posts))
My Kbin rambling thoughts...
Ok, thought it was time to post this.
I've been running a testing group over at fedia.io so I could see if'n Kbin was for me, and I'm really happy, definitely prefer it over Lemmy.
Inline images work fine, I host images on IMGBB, and they give you cut and paste code for images, all I had to do was switch to HTML instead of BBCode, and Bob's your uncle, unlike Lemmy and it's markup language where I'd have to code in the images m'self.
Not sure how well it works with Mastodon, I did test follow one of my Mastodons, but considering how often Fedia throws up 500 errors, along with the fact that there doesn't seem to be a way to view only subscribed microblogs, I've been unable to test this
Links parse and thumbnail fine, no work on my part.
So, why does this matter? Well, right now I have my own Mastodon instance, and it looks like Kbin will make a very good replacement for that, from the memes and short content that I post to my personal account to the link sharing on Taurnation which can now become a community, this will definitely be a better fit. It might also replace my Friendica, as long content like this works fine too. Just have to wait for iKnox to start offering Kbin, I've already volunteered to be a guinea pig.
So, what would make it perfect?
An RSS reader, Friendica has this, and I find it great to be able to subscribe to news and comics just like following anyone else on the Fediverse.
Yep, that's the only feature I need for this to be the perfect replacement for everything I'm doing.
If you think you understand the conflict, you are not understanding the conflict. I have spent decades and lately far too much time on sources inaccessible to most, and I still feel underinformed.
I noticed I commented on world news. My mistake. Lemmy keeps dropping the subscribed filter.
Maybe it’s just because there’s less content on Lemmy as of right now, but I remember doomscrolling Reddit, but now I only briefly open Lemmy once or twice a day....
I always browsed r/all, I subbed to a bunch but only went to them occasionally. I’m in it for the mindless scrolling in downtime and news.
I miss always having new content. I was almost 100% reddit anyway and now it’s 100% Lemmy just with less content so inherently I spend less time.
I know technically I could be a contributor to content but it’s just not me. I think I had ten total reddit comments the whole 14 years I was using it. It’s not my thing.
I feel like with Lemmy, it’s harkening back to a period of the internet where you can approach it and put it down for later. It’s not yet constructed in a way like all of the other social media platforms, that want to keep you invested, even if you know what to expect. Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, Twitter .etc all remind me of the days in the old internet, where you had web portals. These web portals were from MSN, Yahoo and AOL primarily.
They all had things there, to keep you attracted to them. They had their search engines, they had games, they had news, they had weather and many more things. All to keep you in one place and to keep you from venturing out to other places unless you used their search engines before Google became the juggernaut of that.
Social Media today, is designed now, to be like them. Except it’s worse because they’ve got algorithms in place that they extract the data from, i.e you, to pitch to you things that you may be particularly interested in just to keep you invested.
For all of the numbers those social media platforms have, they sure do say a lot of nothing.
I feel like most of the critical news and politics makes it to the top political communities here, but without the 5000 articles of people rehashing the same stupid story over and over. If I read Lemmy world or beehaw news and politics, I have the gist of what’s going on.
Everything else is the meme trend of the week here. Not pooping, beans, vintage memes, Ohio, etc.
I'm looking for an #android#widget to replace my old "RIF is Fun" one for doomscrolling interesting topics.
#lemmy or #RSS would be awesome, #news (real, not Fox) is OK. But it wants to be full wide, one row, minimal, and ideally featuring a virtually endless pool of links that can click through to a web page or its own viewer. Preferably it's designed to respect prime handheld real estate.
#foss would be best, but I don't mind paying outright for something. Ads and subscriptions are deal breakers.
Step 2: (wait, are you sure that you have your puke bucket handy? warning, there are PICTURES in this thing!) Now, read this.
Step 3: go clean your puke bucket. You are welcome.
Warning: those who may be offended by seeing a picture of the Zuck and the Musk - combined with NO MENTION WHATSOEVER OF LEMMY (or Beehaw, or Kbin, etc.) on an article ostensibly explaining "the fediverse", may be advised to not read this little gem.
Edit: but it is CBC News, which iirc is mainstream?
You could write to the author and ask them to edit the work:-).
Squabbles has an interesting list of media related to it fwiw - like this article mentions: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Threads, Reddit, Mastodon, Bluesky, Lemmy, and Squabbles, and the honorable mentions section says how it focused on text-based social networks (nothing about an API) but adds TikTok, LinkedIn, BeReal, and even Pinterest... but still no Kbin (or Tildes, or Discuit, etc.). Nor is it really wrapped up into Lemmy / the Fediverse.
Lemmy describes itself as “a link aggregator for the fediverse,” which to the average person may as well be gibberish. Essentially it’s a community discussion board in the vein of Reddit, based on a free and open platform like Mastodon and Bluesky. You register to a server – or host your own – but can interact with other servers with no issue.
Other articles add mention of like Discord, and even Y Combinator's Hacker News for article aggregation purposes.
Kbin just simply is not considered a major player, it seems. It is not blazing any new trails, nor has celebrity endorsement like Bluesky. At best it seems considered to be "just another instance of Lemmy", and at worst forgotten entirely, whereas at least Beehaw seems to stick in people's minds for some reason.
That said, I have seen one article that mentions Kbin: https://www.maketecheasier.com/best-reddit-alternatives/, which also mentions Beehaw and Tildes and Squabbles, and yet neglects to mention Meta even though the article says that it was posted earlier this month (it also did not mention some other smaller ones such as Discuit). So that is something, at least - as in even if all articles seem biased in various ways, that one at least acknowledges Kbin:-).
i’m doing it because I want to make the fediverse more friendly place, in hopes of making it more welcoming for new users, and the nicer place in general. But I wonder how much is just less bots.
Going to add some negativity here and sorry in advance. I’m hoping I’m being more sensible than mean. The biggest problem with lemmy for my personal experience is that there are are too many posts about itself. We have enough users to thrive as something good. Let’s just do it and enjoy moving on from reddit. If new people come here and all they see are posts about lemmy, fediverse, reddit, they will feel like it’s one note, but I feel like we all have more to offer. I think when there’s some news or something that impacts the platform it’s great to discuss. (Or if there are discussions around actual development and stuff.) In my opinion, there are just far too many.:“Lemmy people are less toxic”, “isn’t it nice here”, “reddit is not as good”, “lemmy just feels fresh”,“loving lemmy so far vs x”. clogging the feed with low quality content. I just feel there are already enough existing posts people can comment on instead of starting new posts. I know the platform is new so it’s to be expected, and I don’t think negatively of anyone making these posts (i usually think positively of them as nice people), but if I didn’t think it was actually hurting first impressions I wouldn’t say anything.
If we build to act like Reddit and keep consolidating as we grow, you’re right
But I think as we grow, we need to add in mechanisms to decentralize. When communities or servers get too big, it’d be nice if we had a way to split them, divide up the users and mods, and migrate them seamlessly.
Right now I think fomo would kill this, but if we had a way to manage federation of multis so everyone can see the top posts of both while still seeing more of the lower ranked local content, I think we could get the best of all worlds
Imagine this - with some clever statistics, we can look at your upvotes (and maybe comments), then put you with that share your take on the topic. Or let communities split on an issue divide before things get nasty
If you like the memes, you get put with the memers, but still see the hottest news and interact with the full community on those posts, and vice versa. And if you really want to be in both, you could do so without doubling up content.
I’ve had this idea percolating through the back of my mind since I learned how Lemmy worked, when things stabilize a bit more I might take a crack at it

It’s an early adopter problem, and it could be much worse (looking at you, Tildes, where I swear I was one of less than 10 users who were not either well compensated professionals (tech or otherwise), or in school at the time to become one, at least before the latest Reddit exodus. At least most of the Lemmy instances, while tech heavy, don’t have the same smugness that a lot of nearly-exclusively highly compensated white collar worker spaces do. (Not that Tildes is unique in that space in the least, Hacker News is utterly insufferable, and the personalfinance and povertyfinance subreddit split arose for the same reasons)
Luckily I think Lemmy has more potential to get more early adopters who don’t work with tech professionally, especially on an instance like Beehaw. I haven’t felt like some kind of lower class interloper (as someone who is in lower level retail management for work) here, unlike many other super techy spaces.
Yup, may mga sites talaga na sablay sa thumbnails (ABS-CBN News is another). Kahit sa Raddle blank din sila, not just with Lemmy. Weird thing is, Philstar Life works okay naman.
Kaya iniiwasan ko mag-source ng news sa mga sites mentioned. I stick to GMA, Rappler, Manila Standard, Manila Times, and One News when posting threads.
Sorry, but I do need to ask a verry sticky question, thats because I need info about those who attacks our community. If I am in the wrong place, please show me where I can post.
post mockupThe videos that are cited on the news constantly for “corrupting the youth with trans ideology”, where are they from and are they real? they never cites sources.
Edit: its good to see a community like traaaans on lemmy, a place thats accessable to me, reddit needing the that much personal info put me off.
