I’m well aware that I can rip most Blu-rays with MakeMKV and then convert to mp4 with Handbrake; however, the former just rips everything raw from the disk so the file size is humongous and the conversion via Handbrake for just a single file is terribly long and puts a lot of strain on my computer....
You can link the makeMKV libs to handbrake so it's a one step process disk -> compressed form.

Actually, it’s explicitly not all in between. The quantum state is a super position, not a smear. It is (ideally) both 1 and 0, but nothing in between.
It’s power comes when you have a multi bit number. 16 bits give 65536 possibilities. A classical computer would have to check each one individually to process them all. A quantum computer does them all in 1 go.
While it gets very messy in the implementation, quantum computers are still binary, just quantum binary. No infinities needed
I’d say the key insight with quantum computing is that its algorithms are about choreographing interference patterns among qubits such that wrong answers cancel each other out but right answers reinforce one another. It’s not just a matter of trying possibilities in parallel or “running different probabilities simultaneously” - the qubits’ states are complex combinations of 0 and 1 states, and they interact with and change one another. Simulating those interactions on a classical computer requires exponentially growing amounts of memory space and time as the quantum computation gets bigger. Trying to divide-and-conquer this simulation over multiple classical computers runs into the need for different parts of the circuit to know about each others’ state, limiting how much work can be sectioned off to be done by each computer in the group.
Most Fediverse software supports image uploads, so there's no reason to use Imgur for image hosting. Hell, even on my small single-user server (atomicpoet.org), image hosting is easy peasy. Not only is Imgur not needed, they're an annoyance for those of us who are used to seeing images natively on the Fediverse....
lemm.ee has uploads limited to like 100kb so people can use avatars but effectively the admin wants 0 image hosting. Idk what to use outside of imgur, was hoping this thread would have alternates but I don’t see anything outside of pixelfed, which doesn’t support anonymous easy upload.
Is there a map that shows the minimum recorded temperature for each spot on earth? This would be interesting to see the coldest places on earth, and also see the countries where water never freezes because of ambient temperature … I guess the every spot in the US would still be under 0°C ?...
This idea is interesting to me because hell making my own stuff is fun. I have access to quite a few usb keys already so technically I might have the material available. Also my threat model is pretty low so I’m interested in security mostly for fun....
Basic cyber security says that passwords should be encrypted and hashed, so that even the company storing them doesn’t know what the password is. (When you log in, the site performs the same encrypting and hashing steps and compares the results) Otherwise if they are hacked, the attackers get access to all the passwords....
Sorry, I misunderstood your post. They could do this by doing the process I described above AND storing parts of your password. Without further research, this sounds insecure though.
E.g. your password is: SuperSecure? The hash of your password is: 15837A4C3B Your client sends the hash and the characters 0,2,4 to the server: S p r They can then ask you for single digits of the password.
Another possibility is that they could encrypt the characters with a key to build a more secure value to transmit. As the others have said, this is possibly unsecure too.
In general: it’s services are either comfortable to use or secure. You can achieve both on a basic level, but not on a higher level.
One of the greats back on r/TalesFromTechSupport had a story about how his company (a telco, iirc) did the following with passwords:
Discard everything after the 8th character.
Replace everything that isn't a number or unaccented letter with the number 0.
Store this "hash" in plaintext.
A user could have a password that they thought was "štr0ng&longsupermegapasswordofdoom" and be able to log in with it, but what was stored was "0tr0ng0l" and they would have been able to log in with something like "!tröng$lips" as well.ä
None of this was communicated to the customers.
Obviously, once in a while a customer would call support because they were sure they had made a mistake entering their password but were able to log in anyway. And tech support had strict instructions to gaslight those customers that they must have entered the password correctly and just thought they made a mistake.
Maybe that’s what corpos want, but I think the average american Republican is just so braindead hyper-individualistic that they don’t quite grasp the consequences of their own philosophy. Seems like it’s just “take care of yourself, I don’t want to have to hear about you”, full stop with 0 consideration for what that actually means.
Obviously, most social networks have some sort of engagement button for liking/up voting/promoting a piece of content. As well as helping users feel like they’re participating, rather than just passively consuming, most networks also use the likes/ups to filter or promote content to other users....
You are using reductio ad absurdum wrong. It is used as a proof by contradiction, which is not what you are doing.
Instead you are using it to construct a huge strawman agument.
This is like if you say “Keeping posts short is good” and I say “The shortest possible post has 0 characters and that’s not a good post, so short posts are bad”. Which could incidentally also be used for the exact opposite (“Explaining your arguments thorougly in a post is good” -> “The most thorough explanation possible has infinite characters, so explaining arguments is bad”).
Because in general, every single thing that is overexagerated is bad. There is not a single thing that, if pushed to absurd limits, is good.
You could have just said “I disagree, I don’t think it would be a good idea because, …”.
Instead you used polemics and a logical fallacy.
You appear to know your logical fallacies. They are guidelines how not to argue, not guidelines to follow.
I can imagine people having fun getting lost in the flow of playing a competitive sport. I’ve also heard some people experience a post-workout high. But does anyone actually feel pleasure in the moment while lifting weights, jogging, cycling, etc?...
Yes, I do actually enjoy working out. I am a sotfware developer, but at the end of the work day, I am tired of developing, I am tired of computers, and I just want to go outside. Both cycling and hiking is my therapy and I clear my head when I do it. I like fresh air, nature and views from mountains. Also, I feel really happy when I finish working out, because I know I did something for myself. But it was not always like that. It was hard from the start, but step after step, it became easier and easier for me. Don’t start with too long walks/hikes/rides. Starts with smaller ones, and every few days add more and more. Start with 1km walk for example. Next week add maybe 0,5km more. Next week maybe add some hill or something. Just don’t overdo it. And find some motivation to do it. Do you like nature? Go walking into nature. Do you like dogs? Get a dog and go walking with a dog.
How did I start hiking and why? When I was hiking with my friends, I was always last, and I couldn’t keep up with my friends. Also, it was really hard for me. I was also overweight. So I had to do something about myself. I started walking, but with short walks. Really short ones (like 0,5km only). But every few walks I added more and more. Now I can do really long walks and hikes without any problem.
How did I start cycling and why? Well that’s another story. I really liked one girl, and she was cyclist. I was thinking it would be easier for me to hang out with her if I also start cycling. I would also have something to talk about with her. So I started cycling and cycling and cycling. Of course I was also talking with her, showing my results, etc. She was really big motivation for me. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out with her, we went on a lot of dates, but eventually, we stopped dating. But at the end of the day, she helped me becoming good cyclist and now I can do really long rides, without any problem.
So, moral of the story: I think the main key here is motivation. Find something that will motivate you. And it doesn’t need to be about walking or hiking or cycling. It can be totally different. This worked for me, but something else will work for some other people.
I’m considering getting a laptop for Linux and want to know a few things before I do. Jkjk it was the old work laptop of someone i knew so i got it from them for the extremely low price of $0, slapped linux onto it, and went about my business
I had to read this a couple times to make sure i got it. Thanks for that. As far as i understand it at least orbits and courses are much easier with chemical fuel because its point and thrust and all over in a matter of a couple hours. Your fuel is mostly expended and you are on the correct track with very small adjustments possibly required. An ion drive while slow is an exponential curve because its speeding up on top of the speed it already has. So instead of going from 0, to 1, to 2, to 3, to 4, to 5 it would go from 0, to 1, to 2, to 4, to 16, to 256. If i am understanding correctly this would far outsrip a point and thrust craft quickly. A probe to mars takes 9 months during the transfer window but i have heard estimates of 3 months for an ion drive craft
It’s always “ah ha but did you know it’s only 80% better for the planet? Gotcha, idiot!” Like yeah, we know.
The best solution is not to drive at all, but if we’re forced to in this backwards country that has been mislead to believe public transport is a bad thing then we might as well take the option that’s 80% better rather than 0% better
I think there are some good reasons for servers restricting content. programming.dev is one of the biggest examples of this by not allowing users to create communities, however if you wish to moderate a community or ask for someone else to moderate one, and it falls within the interests of the server, there is a good chance it will be created. It might be obvious with that server, but it is almost all content relating to software development. It doesn’t really make sense to create a community of cooking recipes there, especially since several others exist within other servers. The biggest advantage to this in my opinion is that there aren’t dozens of empty communities. If you look at some of the bigger servers that allow users to create their own, there are tons of communities with 0 posts. I think its good that some servers out there allow users to create any community, but it makes sense for many servers to not.
I had a medical emergency yesterday that may me realize how lucky I am to live in Canada.
I’m getting weekly immunotherapy allergy shots (which are also covered by the free healthcare here) and I had a bad reaction to a shot. They needed to give me 2 epipens and some ventilator drug and stretchered me in an ambulance to the hospital where I waited about 5-10 min (I was stable at this point) for a private room. They kept me there for like 4 hours with IV drip and prescribed me another EpiPen.
Total cost was 0 with no questions asked. I know for non life threatening injuries like broken bones you might be waiting a few hours to get in, but I’d rather it be like that then have the possibility of going in massive debt.

Permission toggles, pin scrambling, auto-reboot, scopes, MAC randomization, isolated user profiles, longer passwords, sandboxed apps, open source firmware, no bloat &...
GrapheneOS only has support for OEM unlocked Google Pixel phones, and it runs pretty much perfectly on every device it supports. It is extremely easy to install, no rooting required. You just click buttons in a web browser while your phone is plugged in and there’s pretty much 0% chance of breaking anything.
You’re supposed to buy a phone specifically to run GrapheneOS. This isn’t a ROM that you can swap onto any device, it’s native to a specific platform. Also, using GrapheneOS does NOT void the warranty, you can always switch back to stock Android with Google’s web installer.

Why can't multiple computers be linked to run different probabilities simultaneously to accomplish the same as a quantum computer?
