What is the natural science reason to wear blue light eyeglasses instead of just turning one’s computer display’s blue lights off or very low in spaces where there are no other sources of blue light than the screen the person is watching? Suppose that the person has perfect visual acuity without eyeglasses. Suppose also that...
As far as I know, yes some do - but I have also seen some that don’t have nearly as drastic affect on the colors you look at.
Take this with a grain of salt because I don’t know a ton about light filtering glasses, but I’m pretty sure that some of the more “color accurate” ones work by having polarizing lenses that don’t allow certain wavelengths of blue light through the lenses. Whereas the more sepia-tinted ones just apply that sepia tone filter across the lenses. Still, neither one totally blocks all of the blue light because that would drastically alter the viewing experience to make it unpleasant/unviewable. Try going into your monitor’s color settings and setting B all the way to 0 and see how it fucks up all the other, non-blue colors.
I believe the general guidance is high quality filtering glasses > software solutions. But I would only worry about it if it’s an actual problem that you struggle with. I personally run f.lux every night at sundown, but it’s on a very mild setting that you wouldn’t really notice unless you toggle it on and off.
I was watching pro golf coverage on the news and it seems so odd that men and women compete separately - same goes with pro bowling. Just seems weird to me that a game of skill is gendered when you can’t even raise an argument that someone might have an advantage because of what’s between their legs.
I would argue everything. But I’ll focus on two things that immediately sprung to mind which people here have not yet mentioned:
Children’s toys. So long as the toy is safe to play with, it should not matter what toy your child plays with. This especially bothers me since it’s often people’s very first experience with being unnecessarily gendered and being othered from their peers.
Products for pets. Something like “pink is a colour for girls” is entirely a human social construct, and animals have 0 comprehension of this. I’ve heard stories of people getting admonished by complete strangers for putting pink collars on their male dogs.
Edit: Removing my last paragraph since it was off-topic.
Since Google is getting rid of my unlimited Gdrive and my home internet options are all capped at 20 megabits up, I have resorted to colocating my 125 terabyte Plex server currently sitting in my basement. Usually you define a VLAN dedicated to your IPMI devices, only accessible through an access-controlled way (usually, VPN served by the firewall but don’t do that if you’re virtualizing the firewall for obvious reasons). The DC might offer a VPN of their own specifically for this purpose, or you can pay them for more space to install a physical firewall but that’s a more significant investment.
Ultimately best practices say not to expose the IPMI to the internet, but if you really have no choice and your thing is up to date then you only need to fear 0-days and brute force attacks, the login pages are usually pretty secure since access is equivalent to physical access. You will attract a lot of parasite traffic probing for flaws though.
I’m looking to upgrade my Plex and game server. I currently have an i5-4690K with 16 GB DDR3 and it’s struggling a lot. My PSU is a 850W gold rated EVGA from 2017 so I don’t think it needs upgraded quite yet since I’ve been way under the wattage for most of its life....
Without knowing your system utilization numbers it’s impossible to give good recommendations.
I recently upgraded my system from a 4th gen i5 with 8 GB ram (Main board maxed) to a 6th gen i5 with 64 GB of ram (Again max out the main board).
Before the upgrade I was sitting at 95% ram usage + 3 GB swap usage with the proc averaging 0.56 load, io wait was averaging 30%. In other words, I was clearly RAM bound.
After the full body transplant, I was using 23 GB ram with a 1.52 load average and 0 swap. Io wait at 3%.Not enough time for averages yet, but there was night and day difference in application performance.
Let your system stats dictate what you need to upgrade.

Ugh, sorry, the “do your research” phrase to deflect something makes me roll my eyes hard. It might kinda make sense for topics where there is actually research, like COVID prevention, or climate change; and even then, people seem to use it a lot to mean “read stuff I’ve read that I had preselected to agree with my views regardless of whether it’s backed by actual science”. But I find it even more out-of-place when the science we’re talking about is a Kickstarter campaign… It’s become such a catchphrase for thinly veiled attempts at gaslighting people.
But anyway, back to the substance of it. I definitely didn’t mean that anyone in this thread anywhere blames companies for that, I only meant it in a general sense. I agree no one here was particularly doing it. But I’m sure you’d agree that large companies being out-of-touch with their customers is hardly a marginal view.
If by “paywall options” you mean the cheap levels that don’t grant you the actual product, yeah, I posted another comment about those, I’m a bit puzzled why people would actually give their money for that. I just don’t see the point of those, so I can’t really judge the ethical aspects without understanding why on Earth people feel compelled to buy those. I would have expected those levels to have 0 people, but I guess they don’t.
However, for people interested in getting the product, and companies interested in wrapping up the product with those people’s input, I still really can’t see anything unethical going on here. It feel like a win for everyone.
I’m in the market to find a new distro that is similar enough to Fedora that switching won’t be as laborious as I’ve had it before. I keep hearing POP!_os is a good choice but I’m going to as the community what they think is good.
Personally, I use Debian, but it’s a different approach from Fedora. My suggestion for you is to try OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. It’s a rolling release, which means bleeding edge software as Fedora, it’s RPM based and it’s easy to rollback in case of an update breaks something. As I said, not my type of distro (I want 0 breaks), but I used OpenSUSE once while distro hopping and it’s a good distro.
I have default windows defender, but didnt even know its antivirus lol. Is there any antivirus installed by default on any popular linux distro? What do you use?...
I need iRacing and the software for the rest of my sim rig to be fully supported. This means “SimHub” for my wind sim, the “SimRig” app for my motion actuators, “SimCommander” for my wheelbase, and there are a couple others like “The Crew Chief” etc. oh and whatever emulation layer for iRacing; as there’s no Linux version; would need to not get me banned from the anti-cheat software.
I put my money where my mouth was though! I used Manjaro+Gnome for 2 or 3 years on my main machine, dual booting Windows only to sim race. I quit Adobe and Maxon and switched to DarkTable and Blender for photos and 3D modeling. All my 3D printing software and slicers have native Linux versions. I used Chrome, Chromium, Firefox, Dropbox (have since switched to NextCloud self-hosted). Docker was a dream and so fucking fast for web development. I still keep a Linux VM around just for Docker web development.
Here’s the thing… on not one but two occasions my machine refused boot to a GUI. I’m speaking as someone who uses server Linux daily for work, Mac OS daily for work, and Windows daily for play. If Linux distros and GPU makers don’t get their shit together IT WILL NEVER be the year of Linux on the desktop. Exactly 0 times has Windows failed to boot to a GUI for me (short of a hdd or GPU hardware failure) and Mac OS has also not booted to a GUI 0 times. As long as seeing a desktop on boot is not a 100% guarantee when running Linux, it’ll remain as something only nerds or enthusiasts do.
I love Linux, but I’d say it’s a safe bet to say I’ll never sim race or run iRacing natively on Linux short of Microsoft and windows disappearing from existence overnight. It just won’t happen.
For web development or 3D modeling and hacking around? Gimme Linux or Mac OS! WSL is like 99% there but no where as performant as the aforementioned. Also with WSL simple fucking things like networking become a proxy-firewall-ssh-tunnel nightmare.
Since on most fediverse instances you don't automatically upvote your own comment, do you do it manually? What's considered "proper etiquette"? Because on Reddit your stuff is self-upvoted automatically, while in YT comment sections comments with 1 like sometimes get called out for liking their own comment. Do we have an...
I don't upvote or boost anything I create (if I have it would have been by accident or as a test) - it feels weird to do so.
There is an argument for threads/comments to start with 1 upvote, ala reddit, in order to "reward" people for contributing by adding to their rep, even if no other people upvote them further. On the other hand, if for instance total rep were to be capped (there's been some discussion of doing this as it has various benefits), and that cap is relatively low, then maybe all contributions should start off at 0 in order to prevent people from maximising their karma by spamming.
Taking off that auto-upvote and starting from 0 was - mostly humorously - referred to as "Reddit hard mode" back in the day.
That was at least partially because it's far more likely that someone else chose to downvote rather than the commenter / OP, and that meant the content was tainted with suspicion from the outset.
But, if everyone starts out in hard mode it's not really hard mode any more.
Also, we can see both favourites and reductions (up- and downvotes) here* so it's slightly clearer what's going on even if someone chooses to rate their own content.
ETA: kbin ego mode: favourite your own stuff; kbin hard mode: reduce it.
kbin.social. Perhaps not so at other Fediverse places.
See, I always thought that felt really weird when Reddit did it, I never liked that. To me, if a post has zero up votes, that should mean either no one has seen it yet or that everyone who has feels entirely neutral about it, it's right at 0. If there's at least 1 upvote, that should mean at least 1 person found it good, and if it's negative, at least 1 person thinks it isn't. To start that total at 1 instead of 0 feels arbitrary and like designed to be less intuitive, not more.
Like someone said above (but making the opposite point from them here), if you didn't like it, why would you post it? You having posted or commented at all is evidence you meant to, have you ever commented or posted by accident? There's intentionality there by default, I don't see why it needs the auto self-upvote to start with.
It used to be called Bierstadt, for those who know that name and similar alternatives like Grandview, and the other contenders for next new font. I don't remember exactly how it looked, but I hope it's one of the ones where a capital I and a lowercase L look different from each other.
I used to like sans serif until I realized that serif fonts make text more readable and lead to less confusion. For instance, the L / I example earlier, and 0 (Zero) and O (Oh).

What’s the advantage to using 0 for freezing than 32 or 100 instead of 212? If anything there is a higher precision built into the whole numbers on the Fahrenheit scale for the sake of calibration. It would only be an advantage if you couldn’t wrap your head around a different number to represent those states.

A lot of the investments by big companies were made in 2018-2019 with low near 0% interest. now a lot of those loans are coming due which will impact their total assets. they want workers in the office to keep Corp real estate in demand so their investments don’t tank. most likely will result in massive layoffs or bail outs as they will try to protect the shareholders for eternal growth.

and doesn't mention that they are a C programmer or anything. It is extremely unlikely that OP
can customize the entire things by modifying the source code
because it is extremely unlikely they would have any idea as to how to do such a thing. How many people, on earth, in total, can set up, run, and edit the source file of a tiling window manager? Now remove from that value those who are existing linux users. Functionally 0%.
This person wants to start using linux, is asking very simple questions. They are asking here which suggests they do not have a deep and rich existing network of people in their life to provide 1-on-1 support. Otherwise they'd ask one of their many sysadmin friends for individualized advice. You are suggesting to them something which takes a pretty wide diversity of skills and knowledge. And since the specific thing you are suggesting is a window manager, when they can't figure out how to use it, they will be unable to use their computer.
I wouldn't advise a beginner start with vim on day 1, but at least if they did they'd still be able to use the computer for things other than text editing. And find a different text editor while they learned vim.
This is stunningly bad advice, verging on sabotage. Why do you want people to hate linux?
