fmstrat,

Pfftttsshttt… Outside. Kids these days.

is there a way to do programming on Chromebook without installing the Linux mode??

if you’ve ever used a Chromebook, you’ll know there’s an option in advanced settings that lets you install a Linux VM so that you can install IDEs, games, etc… I used it to install GIMP, Krita and more. But I don’t want it anymore mainly because it doesn’t sync with your Google account, so what can I do?? I want to...

fmstrat,

Set up code-server on a server somewhere. I made a Docker container with it behind SSL in nginx. Works great and you can “bookmark as an app.”

fmstrat,

Plenty of people still on IRC. Often through (matrix) bridges, but the terminal clients are still actively developed.

I use linux for the same reason I wear fuzzy socks and sweaters

My understanding of the history of fashion is that back in the 1950s America it was expected that you wore a suit/dress at work unless you had a different uniform. There were a bunch of very boring people who thought that we should be wearing office job garb all the time, because they wore suits so much it was their default...

fmstrat,

Out of curiosity, why do you feel this way? And what are you passionate about?

fmstrat,

That doesn’t answer my question, it avoids it. Passions come in many flavors, and are not all-consumimg. For some its music, and culminates on an instrument. For some it’s sports, and revolves around one. Do you have anything you are passionate about?

fmstrat,

And perhaps OP is the same.

fmstrat,

Because if people don’t, then evil wins. Even GI Joe taught us: Knowing is half the battle.

fmstrat,

Let me dig up that Ubuntu ISO link right quick…

fmstrat,

Go with your gut. His ceiling probably creaked when you walked, and that was it.

fmstrat,

When does he sleep? It is theoretically possible for this to affect him personally.

fmstrat,

Daydream. Take a few minutes, pace around your place thinking about the things you want to do, not need to do. Its amazing what forcing the time to think can have on action, and the changes that can occur that you didn’t think you had time for.

fmstrat,

If it brings you joy, then yes. 😉

fmstrat,

Unfortunately this will just be ammunition for their cause. _“Look at this school, and what they’re allowing in extracaricular clubs. This children are too young to know what’s good for them, we must protect them.” _This will ring loud to their base.

Signal leaked random contacts to me! (feddit.de)

When I press on some message to forward it, it shows me Random usernames of contacts I don’t know. And it even shows some Mobile Numbers I don’t know. For example, one number starts with +964 that’s Iraq. I’m from Europe tho. These contacts and numbers are from all over the place....

fmstrat,

Why would you send them to the Android repo instead of github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop?

fmstrat,

Yea, plumbing was a poor choice for title, hah. Every home store in places I’ve lived always seems to have a knowledgeable person.

fmstrat,

Latency.

fmstrat,

I should also add, this would require you to use a GDPR respecting instance. There’s a reason places like Amazon have amazon.com and amazon.co.uk, etc. That’s not tenable for me, or most users.

fmstrat,

Rumor is since the board aren’t investors, they’re not looking for money from the venture.

fmstrat,

Rocket League. And then I’m not chilled.

fmstrat,

Thank you for the update. What is the recommended process for updating supporting apps using lemmy-js-client? I’ve got three apps, all with branches using an alpha client for now, but will the official JS clients roll out in advance of the official release of the server so we won’t have to run Alphas in production until we can get updates in?

Also, I know I’ve mentioned this before, and the response I got was “It will get upvoted enough”, but the 11/3 update only had 100ish upvotes, and did not make it to Top on my instance. I would really, really appreciate an announcement vehicle that allows us to get a notification. As Lemmy does not yet have a “notify for all in community” (or a community just for development updates that others can’t post to), could we please get some other vehicle where you post links to these posts? Even a pinned GitHub issue on LemmyNet would be fantastic, as we could subscribe to that and then see the link to here. Thanks again!

fmstrat,

Thanks for the response. I’m using 0.19.0-alpha.18 now (edit: in my develop branch), but wasn’t sure if I’d have the option to launch my apps with a non-alpha/beta/rc release ahead of the server release or not.

For announcements, while I’m not sure all developers who would want this are using RSS (I used to all the time, but haven’t lately), that would at least be an option if you were willing to do that. Please let me know if you do plan to make the switch and if so I’ll find a basic RSS notifier vs setting up Agriget or TTRSS again. It’s a shame we can’t turn on notifications for any posts there (similar to if someone replies to a comment/post), as that would be super-helpful here.

fmstrat,

Oh, any idea if there is a js-client community? Hate to spam their issue list but don’t see another way to check on their recco for moving forward. And thank you again.

fmstrat,

If you follow the FDroid link to the GitHub, you can see it’s a community revived product. The original’s last version was from a year ago.

Doesn’t look like the revived version has had many updates, but hopefully it keeps going. I’m a Nexcloud Notes user, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s popularity is part of the reason for that.

fmstrat,

For some reason I would love to see this get hundreds of upvotes and just this one comment.

Not a mastodon user, so my comment is useless anyway 😉

fmstrat,

I think this is by design. I once contributed to git, and it required putting a patch in the mailing list. It certainly forced you to be sure your code was spot on.

fmstrat,

This is what I do, too (similar), though SP might be better for OP.

fmstrat,

I guess you’ll have to change your username to .sh now.

fmstrat,

Very true. Exe does not work in Windows, either.

fmstrat,

.sh is Linux’s version of .bat. There is no .exe as executables typically don’t have a file extension. This is all assuming you know your file extensions in Windows.

Should I rethink the encryption method of my backup drives?

I’ve been using veracrypt for the past 4 years to create container files in everything from thumb drives to external hard drives. After upgrading one of my backup drives, I decided that I will switch to a different filesystem altogether going on, from ntfs to ext4, since I havent really used windows in those 4 years. With the...

fmstrat,

LUKS is a great option, but as someone who was in your exact shoes, and went from TrueCrypt to VeraCrypt to LUKS, I eventually landed on ZFS.

It’s just so, easy. Make an encrypted Zpool on your main /storage disk. Assign a /storage/documents (or whatever you want), Make another Zpool on your /backup disk, and use zfs snap and send to copy only the bit level data that changes.

So fast, so little disk access, and you can manage snapshots. There is even copy-on-write meaning file recovery is easy, too. I use it to send over SSH to a remote server, too.

fmstrat,

I hope more people read this article than just the headline. I mean, I always do, but people should hear the details on this one. I’m not even a user.

fmstrat,

Believable because:

However, the system is highly specialized for scientific journal articles. When presented with real articles from university newspapers, it failed to recognize them as being written by humans.

So outside of its purview? Agree.

fmstrat,

Do you know what the author means by the jagged seam at the end? For some reason it’s not clicking for me.

fmstrat,

His death was ruled a homicide.

It’s in the article.

fmstrat,

Let’s be real, he intended to shoot everyone. He’s dodging his intent to murder a child before being put in with inmates who will know that.

fmstrat,

Fact time. You don’t always die when shot, and the US is a baby factory. I can’t find good stats on non-lethal gunshot, so I’ll do the rest.

Verdict: Pretty accurate.

  • 8.4% without health insurance (33 in 400)
  • 11.5% poverty rate (46 in 400)
  • 20% adults below literacy level 1 (80 in 400)
  • 57% mental illness untreated (228 in 400) (requires math from NIH source)

Posting this at top level since its burried in replies:

fmstrat,

Are you conflating the global population and US shots? I don’t trust the gun stats I found, so I left them out of my fact check in the other comments. Added sources for those and OP is pretty accurate overall.

fmstrat,

I’m confused, you made OP’s point? So how is it both ways? OP is saying they, and the government, should be focused on everyone, however half of our government is focusing only on those 2.

fmstrat,

Hah, yea, I did a fact check above but left gunshots out. Shot doesn’t equal death and rotating the 400 people solves your comment, but I didn’t trust the stats enough to include it. Everything else checks out, though.

fmstrat,

Only 332 million people in the US 😉

fmstrat,

I fact checked in other comments 😉 OP is fairly accurate overall, but I didn’t include gunshots since I couldn’t find reliable enough stats on non-fatal.

fmstrat,

I did the fact checks with references on everything else in another comment. NIH numbers actually made mental illness worse, but must keep in mind the lack of “serious” in OPs definition. Other stats were spot on. Where did you get these numbers? I couldn’t find anything I trusted on non-fatal gunshots.

(Note: just realized you found the same number I did for deaths vs gunshots)

fmstrat,

Oh good catch. Will edit.

PSA: For those who want signal on secondary phone, use molly.

Recently discovered this. Molly supports link with existing device just like on signal desktop. It even has benefit of getting entire chat history unlike signal desktop. Just restore the signal backup file during setup and then click link with existing device. Then scan with you primary phone. Beauty of open source. Molly:...

fmstrat,

Oh yea, I won’t use Beeper. Self-hosted for me!
