gumball4933, in A good food guide to middle earth

This makes me hungry

DavidGarcia, in Four horseman of scaring childhoods

all those are me in the morning

Toto, in Four horseman of scaring childhoods

Help identifying them please

FlaminGoku,

TL: Bilbo trying to get the ring from Frodo.

TR: ???

BL: Galadriel going through her personal test of resisting the ring.

BR: Gollum following Frodo. .

Maybelline,

I’m seeing two Hobbit-esque shots in the top left & bottom right, but I can’t immediately tell which films as it is entirely too early for me.

For the other 2, the blue looks familiar, but I can’t place either of them.

Seb,

From left to right : 1. Bilbo Baggins having one last craving for the ring when reunited with Frodo in Rivendell before the Fellowship takes off on its quest; 2. A lost soul in the Dead Marshes, a swampland Frodo and Sam need to go through on their way to Mordor; 3. Galadriel being offered the ring by Frodo in Lórien; 4. Grima Wormtongue, who poisons the mind of the King of Rohan on behalf of Saruman, but I can’t recall this scene in particular (and could also be mistaken).

AltheaHunter,

4 is Smeagol in the flashback.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Flashback Smeagol and Wormtongue do be looking similar.

BastingChemina,

I only realized recently that young Smeagol is played by Andy Serkis.

I never made the connection before.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Andy did the mocap and voice for Gollum, so being able to play young Smeagol without the CGI just kind of worked out.

Seb,

Right you are! Makes more sense. Always thought young Smeagol and Wormtongue looked similar.

musictechgeek,

Here are video links:

Top Left: Bilbo snaps while trying to get the ring from Frodo in a moment of weakness at Rivendell in Lord of the Rings.

Top Right: The ghostly bodies under water in the Dead Marshes where Gollum is leading Frodo and Bilbo in The Two Towers.

Bottom Left: Galadriel refusing the ring from Frodo while freaking out and explaining how she’d become evil if she took it in LotR.

Bottom Right: Part way through Smeagol’s transformation into Gollum in The Return of the King.

Maultasche, in Four horseman of scaring childhoods

You’re missing the troll jumpscare.

lowleveldata, in Four horseman of scaring childhoods

Where are the clowns tho

jcit878,

those clowns with wheels for hands and feet in Return to Oz used to freak me out

pulaskiwasright, in Four horseman of scaring childhoods

The truck driver from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

Large Marge fucked me up.

blur457, in Four horseman of scaring childhoods

These don’t have anything on the late 70’s The Hobbit cartoon. The trolls, goblins, spiders, Gollum, and the elves we frightening. My brother always made me watch it. I’m almost 40 and I still don’t like it.

Troublegiant,

Rankin Bass Animation always looked real gnarly, but I still loved it.

ArdMacha, in Four horseman of scaring childhoods

Only if you were a child in the early naughties

GreenMario, in Fool of a took

he said calmly

themeatbridge, in Four horseman of scaring childhoods

I never thought Galadriel looked creepy. The whole sequence just seems silly without the context of having read the books.

minorsecond,

I’d say the dark Galadriel scene is the worst part of the movie trilogy.

acockworkorange,

Kinda hot, TBH

Fantomas, in A surprise, but a welcome one

Who hopes for 12,002 spears?

ivanafterall,
@ivanafterall@kbin.social avatar

Your mom.

elbarto777,

Oh, it’s Ivan, after all.

uphillbothways,
@uphillbothways@kbin.social avatar

Look, she has needs, okay. She's a nice lady!

McJonalds,

almost positively certain this guy hoped for 12003

lowleveldata,

It’s obviously 12001 tho

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Well frankly if you don’t hope for 12’002 spears then i don’t know what you’re doing with your life

demlet,

Well look who’s smarter than a fifth grader.

Fantomas,

I also almost never lose when fighting them either. So I think you’ll find I’m both smarter and stronger…

blue_zephyr,

A psychopath

DaSaw,

Maye that’s a round number in their non-decimal numbering system?

reverendsteveii,

He could have just hoped for “more than 12,000” spears.

threelonmusketeers,

In that case, 6001 spears would have been “more than half”.

elbarto777, in Stolen but lol

Don’t compare Gimli to that asshat.

And the other ones either.

Everyone in this photo sucks.

Roundcat, in Stolen but lol
@Roundcat@kbin.social avatar

Gimli: "Ah man, Moria is gonna be fucking lit! Balin always throws the wildest parties! And you know those gigantic furnaces we use for our fine craftmanship, you can smoke an entire Olliphant in them as well."

Gandalf: (I don't have the heart to tell him)

TheBurlapBandit, in Without question

I see only one Man in that picture

irmoz,

Correct. Which gets me thinking, what are the masculine and feminine terms for elves and dwarves? Elf man and elf woman, dwarf man and dwarf woman, sounds clunky…

Maybe elf and alf, and dwarf and dwoman

Thavron,
@Thavron@lemmy.ca avatar

Surely Tolkien had thought of this.

BastingChemina,

Imagine if we had this conversation while Tolkien was still alive. We could have just send him a letter and get a detailed response.

Steeve,

“Man” is gender neutral in this sense, encapsulating the full species, so “woman” should probably be prefixed with “human”… Or man man and man woman.

I don’t really like the terms “man” and “woman” for elves and dwarves anyways. How about elf “maiden” and dwarf “so similar in voice and appearance you can’t tell the difference”

irmoz,

Yes, I’m aware of that usage of the term “Man”, the meme just got me wondering.

Perhaps there’s a case to be made for elves and dwarves not even having a concept of gender - as you alluded to, dwarves don’t differentiate physically, so they likely don’t even acknowledge it at all. A dwarf is just a dwarf.

Elves, too, are highly androgynous, so it may be a similar thing with them. Sex is definitely a thing, though, since they reproduce just like humans do. But they certainly don’t seem to have a social gender division.

bricklove,

If you want go old school, you can say wereman and woman. English used to do this but the were- prefix fell out of use aside from werewolves and their werecousins

Steeve,

That’s way cooler, let’s go back

Anticorp,

Gimly refers to dwarf females as women during his conversation with Eowyn.

stephan262, in Without question

Well technically there’s only one adult Man there… And one adult Elf, and an adult Dwarf.
