They are going by volume, so the overall successes matter and the reason for why the rest are unsuccessful doesn't matter.

Phone numbers get reused all the time, so if they pull the number from the pool they miss a possible future opportunity. This is important when lack of success would massively shrink their pool of numbers at no real cost savings to them since they are going for volume anyway.

Basically you are asking from a logical and well intended point of view, but telemarketers are approaching it from a maliciously logical volume method that benefits from stumbling across enough gullible people to make the rest of the volume worth it.

I'll bet more than one of them had serious mental health issues that were exacerbated by being told to just 'toughen up a little bit' when they reached out for support. Calling people cowards for acknowledging issues promotes a toxic view of men being able to open up about issues.

snooggums, (edited )
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

So you are in favor of people taking the off ramp instead of reaching out for any kind of support because someone else might have it worse.

Edit: Maybe I misread what you are telling them to push through, but it really sounds like you are minimizing their concerns with the second sentence.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

I have seen several therapists both individually and in a group setting, and the therapist's approach can range from "why don't you try to cater to everyone else's insecurities all of the time instead of standing up for yourself in a constructive way" to actual support that can lead to change. It isn't a perfect solution and can require trying more than one therapist to find one that actually listens and helps if you want to actually fix something instead of just someone to listen to you complain.

They were all ridiculously expensive and only one was actually helpful. Heck, the successful one ended with less frequent sessions and then ending with a plan to schedule if needed. I can see why someone who only had experience with the other approaches wouldn't want to waste money on not resolving anything.

In my limited experience the therapists who were men actually acknowledged issues and tried to resolve them, which makes a bit of sense as therapists come from the same society where women frequently want to just be heard and men want to do things because that is how they are raised.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Like most things, toughening up can be helpful in some situations but when used for everything it becomes counterproductive. Like letting petty insults slide when they don't matter is a pretty handy skill, but there is a need to also know when not to and when to reach out so that there is support for when it is needed.

I'm sorry your father did that to you.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

It can be worth it to push through. However, often, what is a huge issue to you, is far smaller to others. Once you start breaking it down, with someone who knows what they are doing, the problem ends up a lot smaller than it seemed.

This sounds a lot like "it is what it is" by recommending pushing through and then minimizing concerns. Why would they be pushing through to go to therapy just to have their concerns minimized?

Maybe I misread it.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

There are a few pieces that involve actually taxing the wealthy and businesses that would fund both single payer and UBI.

Since billionaires' net worth is mostly based on their businesses, taxing businesses instead of giving them massive tax exemptions would add a huge tax revenue stream. Removing caps on social security would as well. Then we raise capital gains taxes back up to reasonable levels again, put reasonable caps on deductions for stuff like interest on home loans and depreciating assets. Things that the wealthy use to pay a far lower percentage of their income and wealth than the average person. They use infrastructure for their businesses and personal use more than the average person, so they should be paying a higher share.

Basically, getting rid of all the tax advantages that come with being wealthy. Just make them pay taxes as their wealth increases and actually make businesses pay taxes. Use that to fund basic necessities and more people will be able to actually climb the economic ladder.

Trickle down economics has never worked, and any excuse to not actually tax the wealthy at a progressive rate is just shilling for the wealthy. Even if it isn't a dollar for dollar exchange, the taxes should be raised on the wealthy so they pay their fair share of what they got out of society because lowering taxes has been counterproductive.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

You are just repeating trickle down talking points and justifying the wealthy paying less than their fair share.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Well, your point being about only billionaires was stupid in the first place so I replied about the wealthy to try and steer it into a reasonable discussion about taxing the group that billionaires are in.

Why are you worried about multimillionaires paying more taxes?

The absolute worst part about it all is that Lea & Perrins was bought out by Heinz in 2005, and yet the Heinz branded sauce is still shit flavored water.

No, this is the best part because L&Ps product didn't go to shit after getting bought out.

Yes to The X-Files, some episodes aged like a fine wine and some are painful to watch. The one off episodes tend to be the better ones, but not always.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

While I do have it with me at all times and use it regularly, I am always able to put it down and focus on whatever else is happening. It is used to fill in the boring parts of the day, and sometimes I just don't use it for a day or two even if it is with me.

I do get nervous when it is away from me, but that is because it seems like I am most needed when I can't be reached.

Also gen X and still remember when I missed out on stuff as a kid because I wasn't around a land line.

I am fully in favor of shared streaming on multiple services over exclusive content. Don't mind a few movies or series being exclusive for a period of time, but some services are just so terrible that it would be great if their content showed up elsewhere too.

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads (kbin.social)

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

I assume that 99.99% of that 95% from threads will not be missed and the other .01% will be linked by someone from a non-threads instance just like how tiktok and other social media currently gets linked.

At a certain point you realize anime relies heavily on its perpetual fandom refresh, with new fans replacing the ones who “aged out.”

Not unique to anime, Hollywood has been remaking movies and TV shows 'for a new generation' forever. Anime is just following the same pattern.

Event Horizon is in the 30s with critics, but higher with audiences. Does it need to be both critics and audience?

I would need to do a lot of searching to find out what movies I like are poorly rated since I don't usually check.

If you like fantasy movies now is the time. Or anytime really, they are very well done and the vast majority of people who like that kind of thing enjoy the Lord of the Rings movies.

The Hobbit movies less so.

I would prefer not to federated with threads and will block if kbin federated. If I wanted Facebook content I would use Facebook.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

There is a setting to block a server, but it isn't fully functional as I still get some posts from those servers.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Kbin has settings to block entire instances. Unless threads is implemented as a ton of different instances it should be easy to just block threads.meta or whatever their instance is called.

I have a few instances like lemmy.ml on my block list already.

Everything on the internet is easily accessible by kids if the parents aren't doing any supervision.

what is a skill you wish you had, and why?

Ok, I might as well go first: I wish I could draw. Not at the level where I could make photorealistic portraits, but I’ve always been envious of those who are able to scetch something together in a few minutes that perfectly captures what they want to convey. Sometimes words aren’t enough to express what I want to say, and...

snooggums,

One thing that I have learned is that concentrating on something means doing it, whether concentrating on doing it right or wrong. So trying to not do something generally means doing the wrong thing because that is what I'm thinking about.

Doesn't help with clumsy stuff that just kinda happens, but at least I stopped focusing on avoiding mistakes and then making those mistakes and reduced the overall number.

snooggums,

The dictionary definition, which also includes one for remembering information that does not require any physical movement, is not the same thing as a vehicle recall. A vehicle recall is about implementing fixes, which have traditionally required being serviced in a physical location even for software upgrades, but there is no reason to have a new word just because the fix can be made remotely. It isn't like the thing that they are doing is any different than being recalled to a dealership for them to install the software updates.

Do you think phone calls should be renamed for cell phones because they don't use physical land line connections?

Should electric cars be called something other than cars because they run on electricity instead of fossil fuels?

Who cares where the car is when the recall fix is implemented? It is still a vehicle recall, just handled remotely.

John Carter inspired the inspirations for Star Wars, including Dune. Heck, if they had advertised it as the story that inspired [list of movies] it would have gone a long way in making it clear that it wasn't a ripoff.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

It is explained in the link, but to summarize: The director wanted to name it John Carter of Mars because yes, that it would make more sense to name it after the main character for movie audiences. Then some dumbass Disney exec made them drop the 'of Mars' part because they didn't like the performance of other recent movies with 'Mars' in the name.

The reason dropping 'of Mars' was stupid is because it just made it someone's name which only works with a decent advertising campaign for a straightforward movie like John Wick.
