@Likewise@bookstodon Just continuing my read through of what I call my, 'often quoted, never read', reading list. Finishing up Josephus now, probably going to move on to Xenophon next.
Author clearly explains how private equity firms are destroying essential industries, how they avoid legal responsibility for the disastrous consequences, who’s empowering them and how they can be stopped.
Private equity’s #enshittification is to blame for much of the worst aspects of health care, housing crisis, the economy as well as the deepening wealth gap.
oh he didn't know what private equity was until 3-4 months into writing his book... and his employer is the Department of Justice which is the government? He looks a little egotistical considering he doesn't have much experience, feels like a smear job.
and his interviewers are even more pushing anti-capitalist rhetoric... and they make things about specific politicians...
I think they're just upset capitalists figured out how to dodge taxes by using debt lol
this is sounding less like an interesting book =[
I don't think he knows anything deep, I think this whole thing is an opinion piece
If you recently learned that your book (or books) were used without your knowledge or consent to train AI, here's what you can do next, according to the Authors Guild (which has already filed a class action suit against OpenAI, representing more than a dozen writers).
That whole process works when there is a person who is taking the responsibility (and claiming - by referencing - to have read the original). When it is a database, to correct that, to even challenge that, is much harder.
@kimlockhartga@PeoriaBummer@tim@bookstodon I found out about The Last Policeman trilogy because it was talked about on the Incomparable podcast; I’d have missed it otherwise, which would have been a shame
Making bread this morning. Cinnamon sugar bread is up first. It's in the bread machine mixing now.
Now I just have to figure out what kind to make once that's done. I need another sandwich bread because the 15 year old made a pretty Italian loaf, but it's also small. It will only last today for sure.
Have any recommendations for good bread machine cookbooks? I am currently using The No Mess Bread Machine Cookbook and The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook.

I'm so sorry for your lost.
I hope that when you read the book (which I think has a more satisfying and gentle ending than the movie) you like it and it brings you joy.
@bibliolater@bookstodon usually #fiction, because I read very little #nonfiction. However, if I do, I try to find some that I enjoy and not only think I should read, because they are good for me.

I come from a country where neither basements nor attics are a thing. My first thought was magic, which made perfect sense to me because aren't all bookstores magical?
Recently, I brought a #book from an online seller. I had to the return it due to the low level damage that it had suffered in transit. This is not the first time that this has happend. I have noticed a marked deterioration in the quality of packaging used to transport #books bought online. Before envelopes were used that had bubbled wrapping inside and gave some sort of protection. Now one has to be thankful if paying 'top dollar' for a brand new #book and it arrives without any minor scrapes especially if it is just stuck in a standard cardboard envelope.
not at all related... the skyrocketing price of ebooks is caused by the skyrocketing costs of marketing & promotion that has far, far, far outpaced normal inflation
a book won't be visible on Amazon if you don't invest, some publishers are spending upwards of $1K a day on ads during a launch-- & these are the indies!
god knows what Simon & Schuster spends
& there's no guarantees anymore that a book will be profitable
@bibliolater@peachfront@bookstodon I love contactless delivery during a pandemic and the m sure many other people do. They are supposed to take a photo with their phones to show it to as delivered. People still have the option to shop in person.
@QueerInTheCountry You're welcome, thanks for posting about this info. Yes I've been out awhile, and I'm safe and happy - I never have looked at my gayness as anything but a huge blessing, and I think people see how it radiates a sense of strength in me. That's not a shield, but it does make my feel able to defend myself and look after myself. I hope you are doing as well yourself!
@tygerprints@bookstodon@jiujensu Aww thank you! I feel my gayness is a blessing too. It's made me stronger, more compassionate and broadened and enriched my life in many ways!
Hope you have a happy/gay day 🏳️🌈😉
Can't beat a bit of Agatha Christie for some comfort reading. Found all these books at my local library last month - I have read all the Agatha Christie ones and looking forward to reading 'A Thousands Ships' and 'The Foundling' next 📚❤️
@fenhuw@Lady@bookstodon Heaps and heaps of influences line my background. Everyone from John D. MacDonald/Travis McGee and Ian Fleming/James Bond to Dune, The Thorn Birds and other Colleen McCulloughs, Jane Eyre, Dickens, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Tolkien, On the Beach/Nevil Shute - and so many more. I believe you write who you are, and who you are is heavily influenced by what you like to read. Dame Agatha had that little bit of EXTRA influence on generations.
