@kimlockhartga@PeoriaBummer@tim@bookstodon I found out about The Last Policeman trilogy because it was talked about on the Incomparable podcast; I’d have missed it otherwise, which would have been a shame
Making bread this morning. Cinnamon sugar bread is up first. It's in the bread machine mixing now.
Now I just have to figure out what kind to make once that's done. I need another sandwich bread because the 15 year old made a pretty Italian loaf, but it's also small. It will only last today for sure.
Have any recommendations for good bread machine cookbooks? I am currently using The No Mess Bread Machine Cookbook and The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook.

I'm so sorry for your lost.
I hope that when you read the book (which I think has a more satisfying and gentle ending than the movie) you like it and it brings you joy.
@bibliolater@bookstodon usually #fiction, because I read very little #nonfiction. However, if I do, I try to find some that I enjoy and not only think I should read, because they are good for me.

I come from a country where neither basements nor attics are a thing. My first thought was magic, which made perfect sense to me because aren't all bookstores magical?
Recently, I brought a #book from an online seller. I had to the return it due to the low level damage that it had suffered in transit. This is not the first time that this has happend. I have noticed a marked deterioration in the quality of packaging used to transport #books bought online. Before envelopes were used that had bubbled wrapping inside and gave some sort of protection. Now one has to be thankful if paying 'top dollar' for a brand new #book and it arrives without any minor scrapes especially if it is just stuck in a standard cardboard envelope.
not at all related... the skyrocketing price of ebooks is caused by the skyrocketing costs of marketing & promotion that has far, far, far outpaced normal inflation
a book won't be visible on Amazon if you don't invest, some publishers are spending upwards of $1K a day on ads during a launch-- & these are the indies!
god knows what Simon & Schuster spends
& there's no guarantees anymore that a book will be profitable
@bibliolater@peachfront@bookstodon I love contactless delivery during a pandemic and the m sure many other people do. They are supposed to take a photo with their phones to show it to as delivered. People still have the option to shop in person.
@QueerInTheCountry You're welcome, thanks for posting about this info. Yes I've been out awhile, and I'm safe and happy - I never have looked at my gayness as anything but a huge blessing, and I think people see how it radiates a sense of strength in me. That's not a shield, but it does make my feel able to defend myself and look after myself. I hope you are doing as well yourself!
@tygerprints@bookstodon@jiujensu Aww thank you! I feel my gayness is a blessing too. It's made me stronger, more compassionate and broadened and enriched my life in many ways!
Hope you have a happy/gay day 🏳️🌈😉
Can't beat a bit of Agatha Christie for some comfort reading. Found all these books at my local library last month - I have read all the Agatha Christie ones and looking forward to reading 'A Thousands Ships' and 'The Foundling' next 📚❤️
@fenhuw@Lady@bookstodon Heaps and heaps of influences line my background. Everyone from John D. MacDonald/Travis McGee and Ian Fleming/James Bond to Dune, The Thorn Birds and other Colleen McCulloughs, Jane Eyre, Dickens, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Tolkien, On the Beach/Nevil Shute - and so many more. I believe you write who you are, and who you are is heavily influenced by what you like to read. Dame Agatha had that little bit of EXTRA influence on generations.
@xgebi@Rob_J@bookstodon You could try #JabRef (open source)
While its primary purpose is to manage scholarly literature, it also has an ISBN fetcher to get metadata from ISBN.
Data is stored in plain BibTeX files. https://www.jabref.org/
Bookish people: I’m making bookmarks as a kind of business card that hopefully people will keep.
What are your favourite dimensions for a bookmark?
Do you like ribbon or thread from a circle cut in the top or do you prefer bookmarks that are just a rectangle of eg paper?
Would you use a handmade one-of-a-kind bookmark? (Website details in a small space on one side, the rest would be pretty, have anything from pop culture icons to scenes or florals.) @bookstodon
@diazona@bookstodon Interesting thought re the “knob” or handle. Very interesting. I’ll have to ponder that. I agree regarding the height: any size bookmark is fine if the book just sits on the bedside table but if you’re carting it around it needs more height, which also means the closed book “grabs” it more, preventing it from falling out.
@diazona@bookstodon what about a bookmark with another smaller piece of paper partially glued on so a page/few pages of the book can slide between the bookmark proper and the added paper? Not explaining it well, sorry.
@pelielios@mjjmori@bookstodon@amwriting Ahh, the dreaded passion. "Kill your darlings", as they say. I've written a fair few scenes with chars not making it, or suffering some huge loss, shed a tear every time. But I know the book will be better for it.
In that case set aside a proper day, schedule the time, and write it out. Get your fav drink n snacks, but you will have to work at it.
And afterwards, it'll look better. It always has for me, again this is just my suggestion, but big, uncomfortable scenes are often the ones I get the most feedback on.
It's that he blames himself and it builds on other insecurities/fears he has, and that he has a very gentle nature overall. He has a pretty complicated way of processing emotions, too, so it takes time to work through it with him.
(If the MC caused a similar incident he'd be barking at the intern to walk it off.)
