As if children's books aren't already losing visibility due to censorship now this...

This year Goodreads has removed all children's books categories from their Goodreads Choice Awards, meaning no more #MG or #PB categories. Worse, Graphic Novel & Poetry, have also been eliminated.

Here you can vote to ask them to bring those categories back:

https://help.goodreads.com/s/suggestions/a0G8V00001thIKIUA2/choice-awards-middle-grade-picture-book-novelinverse-each-a-category

@TarkabarkaHolgy @bookstodon
This is their explanation... as if they couldn't add 1 category without removing 5. Ridiculous...

Please remember to support the petition by voting, otherwise there's no way to let them know how unhappy we are about the removal of all children's books categories from their awards.

@raymccarthy @bookstodon Goodreads is one of the few places where people without an amazon account can still post reviews to a wide audience. While amazon may use the cite to collect info, it still serves a great purpose for many, particularly young readers. It's ok if you don;t want to use it but this is a petition so it continues to be useful for those who need it most.

franciscawrites,
@franciscawrites@mastodon.scot avatar

@GoblinQuester @bookstodon @raymccarthy
I also use it. I use Reedsy, as well.

franciscawrites,

@Meadhbh @raymccarthy @bookstodon
IMO, Goodreads is as good as the people you follow/friends.
My TL is reviews from the people I follow. I trust their reviews. I have been using Goodreads for over a decade, I'm not sure it works as well for the casual user. I also like that young readers are part of the community. There are other platforms. Reedsy, StoryGraph you mentioned Bookwyrm, some people prefer them.
This is a petition o include kidlit in their awards, because kidlit is important.

My child within is in need of a hug and it's Thursday.
Time to read something beautiful. Something meaningful. Something that speaks to the child within.

Just started Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin. Apparently the later books of the cycle are disliked by fans. I am bewildered by that assessment. I can already tell this is an all-time favorite.

Everything from the prose to the characters feels more mature and meditative. Gender is also examined in a much more holistic and painful way. Several passages have already spoken to my soul in such a deep way that I know will remain with me for a long time

Just a few pages of an old favorite for me, but... what are you reading today?

One more for this Spooky Reads September. This one is a reread, because it's worth a second time... I mean just the unsettling atmosphere & the constant self-guessing makes it a great Gothic horror story.

I read The House of The Spirits when I was 12 yo. It's a long book but I remembered devouring it in one day (and night). I'd loved Allende's work since then. Now, Annihilation is as weird as it is awe inspiring. To say I was obsessed with how it's written is a crude understatement.

If you are one to need some sort of story resolution (like I am), I recommend you get The Fall of Hyperion, at least reserved it, or you may feel a bit frustrated when reaching the end of the book.
It's a great book. In some ways, I feel is the opposite of Le Guin's take on Sci-fi but not less good for it.

Two years ago, lightning hit the cable box on the street.

We lost the TV & my old desktop (not to mention all the SPDs protecting the rest of our electronics) to the surge charge.

Since then, each time there's a storm (like today), I unplug everything.

Starting soon, I may have a no Internet day of reading 📚

Happy Friday!

Friends living in , what are the best options for ordering English-language books? What do you do?

Asking for a friend. TIA.

@bookstodon

franciscawrites,
@franciscawrites@mastodon.scot avatar

@nichorra @bookstodon
It depends of where you live & which books you want.

I live in Belgium. I try to buy from bookstores in Brussels. Sometimes I pay for the books to be mailed to me, sometimes I pick them up if I need to go to Brussels for work.

Other times I use Amazon either .fr/.de/.com.be

Your friend will need to do a good search of bookshops online near them & local bookstores that sell or from where you can order books in English, and, worse come to worst buy from the big giant.

I think writing has taken over my brain

Every morning, as I check the trail cam videos to se how our resident hedgehogs are doing I find myself expecting to see something unexpected.

It's a contradiction, I know, but I think that my horror movie loving soul expects monsters to reveal themselves by walking in front of a camera or something like it.

Silly, I know, and yet every morning I brace myself for the shocking apparition that never comes...

@bookstodon

franciscawrites,
@franciscawrites@mastodon.scot avatar

@Grizzlysgrowls @bookstodon

Fair enough. Big foot should be well aware of the existence of trail cams and how to avoid them.

Yet, around here, I'm more incline to think I could catch a werewolf or perhaps a close relative of the beast of Gevaudan. Alas, most days all I get is hedgehogs, mice and the occasional wandering cat.
