In addition to the cactus ferruginous pygmy owl, other protected species whose habitat would be destroyed by the highway include Western yellow-billed cuckoos, Yuma Ridgway’s rails, Southwestern willow flycatchers and Pima pineapple cactus.
If you follow the link to the original post, I’ve got pictures of all these animals and the cactus!
Feel free to check out all the other owl content too!
Is this gonna be another bunch of morons blaming pet owners and their pet cats instead of the feral colonies?
It’s a stupid, pointless argument.
Only two ways to deal with this, catch-spay-release, or catch-kill.
Nature has a tough time restoring balance because cats can more easily live in developed areas, where their natural predators cannot.
I much prefer Catch-spay-release, but it costs money. So I urge everyone to support their local organizations that use humane methods to control the feral populations.
Edit: Like I said, morons. Y’all just want to pick a fight and feel superior instead of actually addressing the real problem.
Domestic cats are descendants of a specie that was native to the fertile crescent so unless you think that feral colonies appeared by magic then yes, cat owners are 100% the people that should be blamed.
We built a good size catio in my backyard for just a few hundred bucks with 2x4s, chicken wire, screws, staple gun, and brackets. Kitties LOVE it! It's big enough for a kiddie pool pond and a few people to sit, cat stuff, and litter boxes. It had to be done after losing cats and after my cats killed 2 rabbits and many lizards, kangaroo rats, etc. I'm sure my local wildlife is relieved and my cats still get to explore outside a bit!
Rubbish. Gutter trash like this acts as if no other species that eats other animals exists on the planet and only felines are the grim reapers of catchable prey. If little stray kitty down the street could be/could have been adopted and kept indoors, the little sparrow could have been saved. ):
A hawk eats to survive. Because they aren't fed by humans, they exist in relatively small numbers. Too little food, if there are too many they starve. Because pet cats are also fed at home, and stray cats feed on garbage, they exist in artificially high numbers.
However, Mrs Strapp said a solution was still needed to stop possums nesting under solar panels and prevent burns from hot rooftops in the first place.
I can’t speak to the hot surfaces, but around here screening the edges of rooftop solar panels is standard procedure to prevent bats and wasps from taking up residence underneath.
The never-before-seen animal is a sea spider — a distant relative of horseshoe crabs and arachnids that live on the ocean floor, eat through a straw-like proboscis instead of a mouth and breathe through their legs.
