TORFdot0,

Very positive on mastodon. Mostly positive on Lemmy. It has some of the same problem with trolls and stuck-up/rude posters that Reddit does but for the most part. 90% of my interactions are positive. Probably closer to 95%

Ashtear,

I think I just realized after reading this thread that I’ve posted more threads on here since I started a few months ago than in all my time on Reddit. Part of that is genuinely missing the niche communities I liked there and helping to build ones for people with similar interests here (and I’m finding new ones in the process).

Another part is my long-standing interest in decentralization in general. Ruthless efficiency has centralized everything, from where I shop to where I hang out. There’s something civic lost in that somewhere. Things don’t have to be as efficient as possible, and good jobs and honest opportunities for socializing are created when it’s not all striving to place offerings at the altar of stock dividends. It’s why I don’t mind seeing the duplicate communities on the Fediverse. The sociologist in me is fascinated to see how it all shakes out in a place where the forces shaping these things aren’t all sociopathic.

That said, I do wish development was more active. I imagine there’s some hesitancy for users to literally buy in, but they really do need more funding for developers.

Mbin has been getting some traction lately, as a community-supported fork of Kbin (which was handled by a single person): github.com/MbinOrg

This seems promising. Lemmy can also be developed of course, but Rust seems a more niche language than PHP

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@Blaze @Ashtear Yes Mbin has been great for me, It works faster and more reliable than Kbin has been lately as well as the community actually listens when you put a bug report or feature request on there github.

Great news!

Ashtear,

This is good to hear. I started my Fediverse journey on kbin but eventually moved over because the spam was out of control. Hopefully this makes it easier on mods.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@Ashtear Yeah the only way the smaller communities that we miss from places like Reddit to move across would be to start posting relevant content on the Fediverse in there own community and eventually there will just as much or more useful content on the Fediverse as there is on Reddit, and maybe people from smaller communities will move across growing the Fediverse further.

Clearwater,

My experience is only with Lemmy.

Pros:

  • My app functions

Cons:

  • Significantly reduced amount of content
  • Most of my content from Reddit is not available here or has an incredibly small community
  • A tremendous number of posts are polarized to the point of being aggressive
  • A disturbingly large number of openly suicidal comments (Eg. “I see no reason to live except…” )
  • Seemingly every climate-related post has someone stating “eat the rich” as a solution to the climate

Overall, mostly negative, but since the alternative for me is nothing (my Reddit client of choice doesn’t work), it’s still better than nothing and is something to scroll through briefly while on the toilet.

drkt,

Seemingly every climate-related post has someone stating “eat the rich” as a solution to the climate

I wonder why that is? Could there be a relation?

Nighed, (edited )
@Nighed@sffa.community avatar

The rich have a really high carbon footprint per kg of meat, even pork and beef have a lower carbon footprint!

Don’t encourage the billionaire meat industry!

.

.

.

/jk - Don’t eat people folks

DudeDudenson,

I agree wholeheartedly, it’s like people in this platform only want to talk about politics. Even with a random unrelated meme people start talking shit about politics it really ruins it for me

ShitOnABrick, (edited )
@ShitOnABrick@lemmy.world avatar

Most climate related posts on most social medias have “eat the rich” as a “solution” I think this is a good idea I think we all love a good bbq

On a serious note a good solution would be to pay a visit or email a local representative or politician in your local community or nation and asking if they’ll add anti monopoly laws

thorbot,

If you don’t each the rich I’ll kill myself

NorthWestWind,
@NorthWestWind@lemmy.world avatar

People actually get to my posts because there are fewer posts, and I’m happy my efforts are being looked at.

Blaze,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Thanks for posting here!

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@NorthWestWind Always good to see people wanting to post, I feel social media has become a place for you to repost, steal and try and do the 'next big thing' instead of just being themselves.

Rawdogg,

I like it so far, going back to reddit and seeing people cheering on genocide on world news is expected but still shitty, lemmy feels way less astroturfed but the trade off is less content.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@Rawdogg I really do hope we get more content in the future, sadly it seems like some people or bots are keep on posting about world news but I feel those get far less traction on here so that's good at least (in ways).

JusticeForPorygon,
@JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

All I see are acres of tankies and Linux users

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@JusticeForPorygon I'm not either of those and try and stay active in the community.

TheWiseAlaundo,

Ya say it like it’s a bad thing.

JusticeForPorygon,
@JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

As a reddit migrator, it’s worse in almost every way. But, I’m not going back to Reddit.

I have found myself using the app less than I used Reddit, maybe that’s a good thing.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@JusticeForPorygon What do you miss the most about not using Reddit?

muntedcrocodile,
@muntedcrocodile@lemmy.world avatar

Its pretty good so far. Ive foubd there is a lot of spam im cobstantly blocking people for clear self promotion bs. Moderation seems to not be as good in this regard but i do appreciate what feels like a commitment to better free speach. Other than that we are just lacking people and content been trying to adsress both and i think we will get there eventualy

Sabakodgo,
@Sabakodgo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

pros

  • smaller community (too many stuff on reddit)
  • awesome simple UIs (mastodon, lemmy)
  • many third part apps
  • people don’t respond with one word

cons

  • instances disappearing
  • confusing at first
ShitOnABrick, (edited )
@ShitOnABrick@lemmy.world avatar

Mixed to say the least my gripes with lemmy are below please excuse my lack of puncation lol

  • lemmy and most social media services for that matter amounts to what is a big massive echo chamber of people repeating and distorting the same opinions over and over again also a good majority of lemmy users are quite hostile good example being a good chunk of lemmys linux users and vegans
  • most of the big lemmy instances as far as I know are not pro freedom of speech which on its own isn’t necessarily a bad thing its upto whom owns said instance to see and do what they want with that instance as they see fit and also lemmy/reddit users don’t debate and challenge ideas but instead take a more hands on approach such as insults and ridicule I also think this is affecting lemmys growth aswell as new users may leave the platform after realising its a slightly unwelcome hostile baron wasteland
Nikki,
@Nikki@lemmy.world avatar

most places i visit arent riddled with toxic assholes, i won’t receive hate messages and replies for existing. generally a nice place

i just miss the lack of content and lack of small niche communities from reddit, i have like 8 trans related communities subscribed and content trickles in a couple times a day

less time scrolling is nice but as every social media shits itself i have been running out of options to take my mind off life for a while lol

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@Nikki Yeah I know I'm in a lot of Trans subs and they seem to be pretty dead sadly, maybe I need to post a little more on them and see if others want to do the same and start something going but really unless there's something helpful for someone else it won't really get used long term. I hope this changes in the future.

CanadaPlus,

Good. No complaints, except it needs to get bigger so it can support niche communities. I like how Lemmy has more powerful formatting rules and and “preview” button so you don’t have to do ninja edits if you get it wrong.

BradleyUffner,

I like the flexibility and freedom.
I dislike all the duplicate stories clogging the feed

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@BradleyUffner It's one of the downsides I've seen, it seems like some people choose to post the same thing on 3+ communities of the same topic and it really just gets annoying sometimes.

raskyld,

I wonder if there could be a technical solution to this problem, like letting users define aggregates of multiple community and let them choose a deduplication algorithm of their choice… 🤔

AgentGrimstone,

I like that there are zero ads, not even in the app I’m using. It’s kinda weird.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@AgentGrimstone You get people advertising there own things but that is almost understandable and you can just block the person if that's all they talk about.

AgentGrimstone,

I guess I’m lucky because I haven’t come across even that yet.

You did remind me that I have blocked users and communities that are in a language I don’t understand. That would be the one dislike I have, I wish there was a language filter.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@AgentGrimstone Yeah, a language filter would be good, just not sure if most people would click the correct options 100% of the time.

June,

I’m still frustrated by the sorting on lemmy and still have to use top 24 hour to feel like my feed is current. I feel like I don’t get breaking news as quickly as I did on Reddit a that frustrates me and leads me to lurk /r/all occasionally.

Mastadon has all the content I want but no people in the places I’m at. Feels very empty.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@June It's one of the reasons I use Kbin/Mbin is because I can follow people who are on Mastodon and still get there content on the Microblog area as well as see the the Lemmy stuff through Threads (the tab not the application).
