Feel pretty much the same. The echo chambers seem to be as bad if not worse than Reddit. People just don’t want diverse opinions. Everything is black or white regardless of the problem. I will probably leave soon. I honestly don’t feel like lemmy and the type of people it attracts are good for my mental health.
Sorry to hear. !casualconversation tries to be more laid-back conversation. We are also trying to get !moviesandtv going after losing the previous community. Movies hopefully are not as polarised as other topics
I’ll probably be sticking around, but for sure the echo chambers are worse than probably every social media I’ve tried (which admittedly isn’t very many). Imo it’s easily the worst part of Lemmy, and it’s a self-feeding problem. I don’t think the bottleneck to lemmy’s growth is technical anymore, but a culture thing. Personally I’m hesitant to share lemmy with other people in real life because I’m scared that they’ll think I’m a tankie.
@SpookyUnderwear What sort of opinions are you looking for as you mentioned you don't like the Linux, Tankies and stuff like that (Sure I don't really like seeing everything about Linux) but what is the ideal 'community' for you?
I’ve had a similar experience. I have actually engaged with the tankies in good faith on several occasions, and it has just gotten those account banned for I guess being a leftist heretic? For arguing that there is more to socialism than Marxist orthodoxy? For opposing campists? Idk, they really seem to dislike that, and these days It’s pretty obvious that the worst sin on ml is making tankies look dumb by actually knowing even basic political science.
@skullgiver Things like a 'mute' for content is something can has been suggested a few things and I feel as if Mbin (a fork of Kbin) may do something like this in the future as they are always trying to make the Fediverse experience better.
I agree with the points being made here, but for me personally, my favorite thing is that I’m not constantly being corralled into some corporate trap like other social media - especially lately. I’m being treated like a user again, instead of a statistic in some dickhead’s CPM chart.
The thing is, I wouldn’t even be mad about ads necessarily. It’s just that the whole idea of “ads” has become so aggressively anti-consumer that it’s literally a bad security practice to not block them.
Like, if they allowed well-vetted ads, served without tracking and all that trash, I honestly wouldn’t mind. The server hosting does need to be paid for somehow, after all, and it remains to be seen if donations alone can really sustain it long term.
That said, as a user, I do appreciate this being one of the very few places not trying to inundate me with consumerism.
@kakes Yeah unsure if the future of the Fediverse can last with just donations but it seems like most instances don't cost much to run and knowing you have so much more content than if you where just trying to be another Facebook without the Fediverse access.
In the end of the day the cats out of the bag and companies like META know this and are rather trying to create there own Fediverse instance, just make there platform join it (such as Tumblr) or hope that it goes away like X/Twitter
@mindbleach@Brkdncr TBH yeah Lemmy.world seems to be the centre when it comes to Lemmy but Kbin.social seems to do pretty well with it's stuff as well but I tend to switch between the two communities/subs/magazines as they both have there own uses and it's nice to have the option.
Pros and cons like most things. I enjoy the more overall laid back crowd that seems to be a little on the older side compared to Reddit. Sticking with Reddit though there's just less of everything, less content, less people, and less trolls. This however is not necessarily a bad thing overall though (especially the trolls) given that the content here is less diluted and more valuable, same with the discussions.
Like many have harped on though Reddit kind of turned itself into an answer hub so even without an account anymore I still on occasion need to go back for a solid answer on something. I'm sure given time that will change but for now I'm still hopping fences.
@TheCrispyDud I try to put the answers I get from reddit when I need the answer, on the fediverse so hopefully others can find without having to go to reddit, this seems to sometimes help.
I really like it so far, especially with the new apps. I’m using Boost and I honestly can’t tell the difference between this and the old Boost for Reddit. The transition is really smooth. Oh, and everything on Lemmy feels very intuitive and the people seem less toxic.
And Mastodon…I really like it. I’ll post something with the right hashtags and suddenly there’s a conversation between a bunch of people with the same interests that goes on for weeks!
@SpookyUnderwear@Panda Glad to know Boost is working for you both, I personally can't use it due to the Instance I use isn't a Lemmy one but maybe in the future an app with be accessible for mine.
There’s just so much more on reddit, including stuff I can’t find here. Fewer communities with fewer people means there’s just less to discuss. Honestly, I don’t think Lemmy will ever overtake Reddit. Eventually, both will die when something else comes along
Still, I’ve not been hating it. My introverted ass gets its dose of anonymous interaction, and I do think Lemmy will at least grow more overtime
I’m seeing the exact same fatal flaw I’ve seen on every single forum that gets any traction where moderators are afraid to ban people, or at least temporarily ban them, when they are just generally disruptive/acting like assholes. Just because someone doesn’t clearly 100% break a rule to the T doesn’t mean they should get to stick around. Disruption is grounds enough to remove someone.
You do not have an obligation to free speech. You are not a government entity. Yes, it is laudable to embrace different points of view and allow the free exchange of ideas. But some people are just assholes and keeping them around is bad for the community. Don’t be afraid to ban those people.
I keep a finger over the "block" button at all times. Which isn't to say that I block anything I disagree with - but some people just show their colors so fast.
Rocky. I run an instance and the codebase is really unstable. FIghting duplicate data in the database, fighting database eating all the ram infinitely and then dying. Here’s hoping the future is brighter as the present is absolutely murky.
As to the whole fediverse being the more difficult one - it technically is, but I think people need to stop being absolute wankers and put more effort than touching a few buttons into everything, not just fediverse.
People wise - the majority of active community is incredibly left shifted, to the point of delusional crap getting to the “frontpage”, if you will. I find it sad that some articles posted get treated as “the real thing”, but the people chanting them haven’t even bothered reading them, as otherwise they’d find those same articles don’t say what they think they say. In that regard it’s just like reddit, I guess.
I can’t go 24hrs without some conservative running to the defense of google/calling people opposing predatory business practices “entitled” so clearly we both need to prune our subs lol
@DirkMcCallahan It will most likely change over time especially with more and more content over time being added especially useful content that people can use for things.
Everyone on the fediverse is a white male tech nerd. Obviously, not everyone, but it really feels that way. There is a distinct lack of voices from outside that demographic, and it’s super obvious. Reddit had this, too, but it’s way worse here.
It’ll get better in that regard, but it’ll take a decade to get there.
And it’s definitely not helping that the biggest Mastodon instance for artists is pretending to be progressive while being hostile to the LGBT community. Mastodon has a chance to snatch up artists who are pissed off about Twitter, and of course they’re going to check out mastodon.art not knowing about their bullshit.
I’m not sure what the solution to that should be, however. Take down mastodon.art? I’ve been telling people to avoid that instance, but non-techie people don’t understand that the Mastodon developers don’t own it.
@danielton I would suggest people to go to something like toot.lgbt or another one that puts the LGBTQIA+ community in the front. Obviously LGBT arts are stuck between going for Art or LGBT at that point but the hope will be once they realise mastodon.art isn't good for LGBT people they will move to another instance.
It took a while to get the hang of Mastodon, but gradually I found a good mix of hashtags (and people) to follow and have done some strategic blocking. Now my feed feels active and is a lot more lively than Bluesky.
Lemmy is slower than I’d like, but at this point my “Subscribed Hot” feed does a pretty good job separating the wheat from the chaff and also is getting at least a handful of new posts every couple hours. I’m trying to do my part and post more, but I’m still rarely the first to find a thing worth sharing.
A lot of people comment that they don’t like the lack of content/comments. I personally see it as a plus. I curate the communities I subscribe to, comment and post in those, and find the discourse and topics chosen to be much more reasonable and thought out instead of spraying vitriol and diatribe across my screen daily. I was on Reddit for 15 years and Lemmy has been a massive breath of fresh air.
@Crackhappy Glad you're getting the best out of the Fediverse. It would be nice to have a few more useful bits of information as often I can't find it on the Fediverse, so I end up going back to reddit to find what I'm looking for.
