wahming,

Why the f is it called that?

wahming, (edited )

I miss the astronomer guy on Reddit who would explain every one of these posts

Edit: Turns out she’s the one who made this discovery! Here’s her post

reddit.com/…/i_have_discovered_that_up_to_half_of…

wahming,

Yeah that was the name, right

wahming,

See my edit

wahming,

See my edit

wahming,

According to the discoverer, this has nothing to do with the event horizon.

wahming,

Yes, you do notice I used ‘she’ in my edit after I found out…

wahming,

Ah I see. No worries, cheers!

wahming,

Maybe don’t read too much into the word choice of a non-technical article, and trust the actual astronomer discoverer talking about it?

wahming,

Funnily, I understood that. There’s been a theory that our current obesity epidemic is caused by an environmental factor influencing our brains into targeting a higher ideal weight than it otherwise should. This is the ‘switch’ the title is referring to, and they’ve presumably discovered its existence and a way to influence it. Of course, there might be more than one…

wahming,

There is good reason to think otherwise. You might find this an interesting read:

AI text detectors tend to flag text from non-native speakers as AI generated (scitechdaily.com)

In a study recently published in the journal Patterns, researchers demonstrate that computer algorithms often used to identify AI-generated text frequently falsely label articles written by non-native language speakers as being created by artificial intelligence. The researchers warn that the unreliable performance of these AI...

wahming,

I count 4 mistakes. Conclusion: AI generated

wahming,

Lol. No big deal. It’s the sort of thing your eyes skip over when checking your grammar.

As a non native am keenly aware of every mistake i make. Sometimes, i fix the same text 4 or five times in row.

Should be

As a non native I’m keenly aware of every mistake I make. Sometimes, I fix the same text 4 or five times in a row.

Two of the mistakes were just capitalization of ‘I’. You should probably also use either digits or spelling for both numbers, not a mix.

wahming,

It’s expedient for people in Western Europe and the US that this war be carried out with poisonous weapons - but they are not the ones who will live with the ecological damage in the aftermath.

Aren’t the Ukrainians the ones who are choosing whether or not to use them?

wahming,

It’s easy to make the call of sending these munitions overseas when it won’t be your own populace suffering the consequences.

It’s almost as if the Ukrainians aren’t the ones getting a final say in if it’s used…

wahming,

The Russians have ALREADY been using it all along.

I get where you’re coming from, but it’s their country and their own children and families at risk both now and in future. I’m not about to make their decision for them, and I don’t think any of us have the right to.

wahming,

It’s a simple metal tube (reusable). Just because it’s niche doesn’t mean it’ll cost a bomb.

wahming,

Or, they could buy one reusable metal one to last a lifetime.

wahming,

Yeah, somebody else explained to me that they can only use plastic straws for disabled folk

wahming,

As long as you don’t mind having basic human rights denied

Why are people hyped about RSS regaining relevance? (lemmy.world)

According to Google Trends, during the past few years, there has been nothing but a few minor bumps that faded away as quickly as they came. I love RSS because i do not have to scroll through dozens of different news sites all day and i would love it to return....

wahming,

I’m a Buddhist, and I’m so confused by this analogy 😂

wahming,

Cmon, I’ve blocked all the meme and shitposting communities. Why am I still seeing this post?!

Oh, because it was good enough that I subscribed to it instead. Right.

wahming,

Is something wrong with your website https?

EXCLUSIVE: Naomi Wu and the Silence That Speaks Volumes (www.hackingbutlegal.com)

When China’s prodigious tech influencer, Naomi Wu, found herself silenced, it wasn’t just the machinery of a surveillance state at play. Instead, it was a confluence of state repression and the sometimes capricious attention of a Western audience that, as she asserts, often views Chinese activists more as ideological tokens...

wahming,

Every victim of suppression that leaves is a possible dissident operating from abroad

wahming,

Eww, gross. Where can I get me one of those?

Should there be an "ALL OFF" button to instantly shut down all these new AI Defense bots that the Military in the US want to build and deploy in the thousands? (decrypt.co)

The Pentagon Is Accelerating AI and Autonomous Technology America’s military leaders are racing to deploy thousands of autonomous weapons and an AI-powered air monitoring system for Washington D.C.

wahming,

Most people in this thread need to learn the difference between AI and AGI

wahming,

Jordan is an asshole, but misinformation is misinformation. We aren’t trying to become Fox ‘News’ here

wahming,

Does your GPU really contribute that much to your electric bill? Idk, I haven’t done the math myself

wahming,

Righto, thanks for the detailed reply.

The CEO might not be far wrong in that case, the average user probably doesn’t run their GPU long enough to notice efficiency gains. And given their preferred market are the ones with money to burn, it makes sense they’d target improved performance over efficiency.

wahming,

Yeah, I guess electricity is pretty cheap in my corner of Europe (like a quarter that), so I don’t really notice.

Efficiency does affect more than just electricity costs. less efficient chips also means more heat and more massive coolers. Many of the higher end cards today have thick, heavy coolers that we now have anti-sag braces. It also potentially means more noise for fan coolers or requiring more expensive coolers.

Good points. I guess the average customer for their new cards is probably willing to put up with said issues to get the latest and greatest performance, or that’s what the CEO is counting on

wahming,

It’s a good thing you have the option to pay to remove ads and stay the customer, then

wahming,

When’s the last time you developed and released a full fledged software project for free?

wahming, (edited )

Edit: Nvm, just realised you’re not OP

wahming,

Which… Sync does. So why are you bashing on it?

wahming,

AFAIK pretty much all the lemmy apps are decent. There’s no reason to bash on any of them just because it’s not your preference

wahming,

Wait… So you’re arguing… Less options is BETTER? That somehow if they took away the choice of seeing ads and made payment mandatory, instead of giving users the choice, that would be more moral?

WTF?

wahming,

Yeah, no. I think that’s a ridiculous opinion to have. FOSS is all about personal choice, yet here you are arguing that choices should be limited because you personally don’t like one of the options. We’re just going to have to disagree on this.

Fatal shooting of University of South Carolina student who tried to enter wrong home 'justifiable,' police say (www.nbcnews.com)

The homeowner who fatally shot a 20-year-old University of South Carolina student who tried to enter the wrong home on the street he lived on Saturday morning will not face charges because the incident was deemed “a justifiable homicide” under state law, Columbia police announced Wednesday....

wahming,

In this case, the person was literally breaking into the house, broken window, reaching for the doorknob. The homeowner had every reason to think their home was being invaded. And given how violent crime can get in the states, unfortunately shooting first in such a situation does make logical sense.

The situation sucks, but this case might be more on the system than the shooter.

wahming,

The homeowners were awake, and calling the cops. Sounds like the kid was drunk to the point he wasn’t engaging in conversation.

wahming, (edited )

Fedi is weirdly more downvote happy than reddit used to be. You made a simple factual statement, either true or false. Nobody’s pointing out any mistakes, just downvotes.

wahming,

Most major developers of AI generated imagery, at least the corporates, will do it as they share the common interest of not polluting their sample data. Open source imagery might make it optional, but the functionality will be implemented. Either the PRs will be submitted by one of the corporations, or marketing like this article will convince the devs to implement it.

Remember, they don’t need EVERYBODY to implement it. As long as this reduces the amount of unmarked AIgen images by a reasonable percentage, it’s worth doing for them.

wahming,

TLDR sugar and fat aren’t to blame. Something in the environment is screwing up our bodies ability to maintain a normal weight, and it’s probably microplastics / forever chemicals.

wahming,

They link to a lot of studies, and explain the reasoning at every step of the way. Like I said, it’s an interesting read. I’d be happy to hear an opposing view about any mistakes in their logic.

wahming,

Right? Prior to this I would have agreed with you about sugar. I’m open to the possibility that they’re making mistakes I’m not smart enough to notice, which is why I’m happy to hear other viewpoints on it

wahming,

Rats living in your house, well, that’s where they live

wahming,

Interesting read. I’ve read a few articles about the negatives of longtermism before this, but this was the first one that actually made sense
