A new discovery reveals that astrocytes, star-shaped cells in the brain, play a key role in regulating fat metabolism and obesity. These cells act on a cluster of neurons, known as the GABRA5 cluster, effectively acting as a “switch” for weight regulation....
Funnily, I understood that. There’s been a theory that our current obesity epidemic is caused by an environmental factor influencing our brains into targeting a higher ideal weight than it otherwise should. This is the ‘switch’ the title is referring to, and they’ve presumably discovered its existence and a way to influence it. Of course, there might be more than one…

It’s expedient for people in Western Europe and the US that this war be carried out with poisonous weapons - but they are not the ones who will live with the ecological damage in the aftermath.
Aren’t the Ukrainians the ones who are choosing whether or not to use them?
The Russians have ALREADY been using it all along.
I get where you’re coming from, but it’s their country and their own children and families at risk both now and in future. I’m not about to make their decision for them, and I don’t think any of us have the right to.

The CEO might not be far wrong in that case, the average user probably doesn’t run their GPU long enough to notice efficiency gains. And given their preferred market are the ones with money to burn, it makes sense they’d target improved performance over efficiency.
Yeah, I guess electricity is pretty cheap in my corner of Europe (like a quarter that), so I don’t really notice.
Efficiency does affect more than just electricity costs. less efficient chips also means more heat and more massive coolers. Many of the higher end cards today have thick, heavy coolers that we now have anti-sag braces. It also potentially means more noise for fan coolers or requiring more expensive coolers.
Good points. I guess the average customer for their new cards is probably willing to put up with said issues to get the latest and greatest performance, or that’s what the CEO is counting on

Wait… So you’re arguing… Less options is BETTER? That somehow if they took away the choice of seeing ads and made payment mandatory, instead of giving users the choice, that would be more moral?
Yeah, no. I think that’s a ridiculous opinion to have. FOSS is all about personal choice, yet here you are arguing that choices should be limited because you personally don’t like one of the options. We’re just going to have to disagree on this.
The homeowner who fatally shot a 20-year-old University of South Carolina student who tried to enter the wrong home on the street he lived on Saturday morning will not face charges because the incident was deemed “a justifiable homicide” under state law, Columbia police announced Wednesday....
In this case, the person was literally breaking into the house, broken window, reaching for the doorknob. The homeowner had every reason to think their home was being invaded. And given how violent crime can get in the states, unfortunately shooting first in such a situation does make logical sense.
The situation sucks, but this case might be more on the system than the shooter.
Fedi is weirdly more downvote happy than reddit used to be. You made a simple factual statement, either true or false. Nobody’s pointing out any mistakes, just downvotes.
Most major developers of AI generated imagery, at least the corporates, will do it as they share the common interest of not polluting their sample data. Open source imagery might make it optional, but the functionality will be implemented. Either the PRs will be submitted by one of the corporations, or marketing like this article will convince the devs to implement it.
Remember, they don’t need EVERYBODY to implement it. As long as this reduces the amount of unmarked AIgen images by a reasonable percentage, it’s worth doing for them.
TLDR sugar and fat aren’t to blame. Something in the environment is screwing up our bodies ability to maintain a normal weight, and it’s probably microplastics / forever chemicals.
They link to a lot of studies, and explain the reasoning at every step of the way. Like I said, it’s an interesting read. I’d be happy to hear an opposing view about any mistakes in their logic.
Right? Prior to this I would have agreed with you about sugar. I’m open to the possibility that they’re making mistakes I’m not smart enough to notice, which is why I’m happy to hear other viewpoints on it
