Except it’s not proprietary, and presumably there’s no other way to do it in the browser, so did discord really have a choice other than not implementing said feature?
On top of that, their desktop app uses essentially the same website in an internal browser, so unless they handicap themselves by not implementing anything firefox can’t support, I still don’t see how it’s their fault
Just thought I’d share something I thought was pretty interesting. I have a mother in law who is… well let’s just say she’s a stereotypical older mom who doesn’t own a computer, just an iPad. During the pandemic, she started getting into Nintendo games and bought herself a Switch. Fast forward a few years later and...
TBF it doesn’t seem like they were against piracy per se, they just wanted to avoid potential liability. That said, I’ve still moved on to another instance.
It’s my goddamn motherfucking mobile data and MY PHONE. I should be able to use it however I want. My wifi went down because the greedy, cunt-faced shitbags at Comcast stole taxpayer subsidies to enrich themselves instead of actually providing the service we’re paying for. I tried to switch to a mobile hotspot and my phone...
How fucking stupid is that? Sorry, but not having a good morning. This is like when I found out you can’t set the number of rings either. Sometimes I just want to smash all my tech and go back to rocks, sticks, and leaves.
These issues are probably cultural and region-specific. The countries I’ve lived in are the opposite, voicemail just isn’t a thing and if you leave an important message in voicemail you’re likely to get blamed instead.
I’m certainly seeing the same issues on my android that the author writes about. Especially when you’re just browsing and haven’t keyed in a destination.
Been having this issue for a while now, basically whenever I try to swap over to another account or log out of an existing account, it won't update. It'll refresh the page, but I'll still be on the same account. I've tried all the troubleshooting methods. it happens in safe mode, but doesn't happen in private window mode. If...

"AI researchers such as Timnit Gebru affirm that longtermism is everywhere in Silicon Valley. The current race to create advanced AI by companies like OpenAI and DeepMind is driven in part by the longtermist ideology. Longtermists believe that if we create a “friendly” AI, it will solve all our problems and usher in a utopia, but if the AI is “misaligned”, it will destroy humanity...."
Why? The author explains what longtermism is, at least their perspective of it, but then makes the jump to ‘in conclusion, it’s bad for humanity’ without ever quite touching on WHY it’s bad (having a few key followers with questionable ethics is insufficient, you can do that about ANY major belief)
That’s not much different from any other belief system, as far as I can tell. Shitty people will justify their actions no matter what. Look at all the atrocities that have been performed in the name of Christianity, Islam, or even plain nationalism. A threat to humanity it does not constitute, at least IMO
No, it gives them a justification to do so. But is that actually any different from any other belief system? Powerful assholes have always justified their actions using whatever was convenient, be it religion or otherwise. What makes longtermism worse, to the extent it’s a threat to humanity when everything else isn’t?

It’s not a video game tech tree. Scientific progress isn’t linear. We hypothesise, we experiment, and sometimes we get lucky. If it was an engineering problem we could make incremental improvements to the manufacturing process to get small improvements in the results, but it’s not.
I have. A lot of it boils down to personal preference in how you prefer your app to behave and look like. Customization can only get you so far. UI aside, they were both pretty feature complete.
Lets assume we develop the capacity to create virtual worlds that are near indistinguishable from the real world.
