tvbusy,

The original video showed that just changing the Agent string fixed the “problem”, so it has nothing to do with ad blocking.

tvbusy,

Early Christmas present for FireFox, yay!

tvbusy,

Snap is what finally forced me to explore the vast selection of distros. Mint Linux is working well for me. I do miss Plasma Desktop though.

tvbusy,

This reminds me to donate to uBlock Origin. The dev does not accept donations though. I can’t imagine a fay without uBlock Origin.

Simplest solution for fragmented communities: Redirect comments to one post (by asking or with new functionality)

EDIT: Thank you for all the great responses! I agree that a forced implementation is no longer the way to go. I’ve left the post as is, aside from this comment, in case anyone wanted to reference part of it. At this point, I think implementation 1 (Sincere Request) is the way to go if anything....

tvbusy,

I feel the same too.

I think the merging can be part of the federation process as well. Since I’m going to receive posts from the same server, it can combine these posts and give me back the combined view. There will be some kind of repost ID/link so that the server knows how to combine them.

tvbusy,

Just another way to say “that 2 million Euros should have been for me”.

tvbusy,

Like someone on lemmy once said: tools like this will make the climate situation worse since people can eat what they want and not have to worry about gaining weight. The drug is certainly going to help a specific group of patients but it’s very likely that it’ll be abused.

tvbusy,

Try Paint.net. Layers, transparency, filters and even plugins. It’s free to download from their website. Install from Windows Store does have cost as a way to donate.

tvbusy,

The fact that it’s impossible to change game on an ongoing/completed game is exactly the reason why everyone is angry. This is distortion, simple, just like the example of car being charged for miles mentioned in the article. It’s no coincidence that games are advertised as “built on …” since game engine decides how the game is built.

tvbusy,

I afraid Microsoft will ban me for reading news articles copied from websites without permission, or just having a pirated game on my Windows partition.

Or maybe Chrome (I use FireFox, just an example) ban me for visiting “unclean” websites.

Maybe even the landlord of my rental will kick me out for keeping book post due from the local library.

It’s a scary society we live in.

tvbusy,

It could have been the other way around if global positioning systems were either not developed or used only by the military. In that case, detecting scenery of a park could be easier than trying to figure out the position on the map.

Or it could just be that maps data are not shared. You’ll need to hire boats and hire people to go and draw the map.

They Shall Not Grow Old (2018) by Peter Jackson.

tvbusy,

RoR is very… specific. Some love it because it comes with magic. Many hate it for the same reason.

You either knows the magic and love it, or you hate it with a passion. You never really know when (not if) your change will break the system because it’s supposed to name in a very specific way that work by, again, magic.

tvbusy,

As with traditional Reddit PR: Reddit will comment when there’s correction to be made. Since Reddit made no correction, the article is 100% accurate.

tvbusy,

If the pieces are small enough, there’s an option to print one by one in the same print.

Zoom CEO says Zoom meetings hinder innovation and debate, wants employees back in the office (www.zdnet.com)

Zoom, the videoconferencing platform that profited substantially from remote work during the pandemic, is now asking employees to return to the office. Its CEO, Eric Yuan, claims Zoom meetings don’t let people build trust or be innovative....

tvbusy,

“Quite often, you come up with great ideas, but when we are all on Zoom, it’s really hard,”

Easy, close the company down.

tvbusy,

Making education so expensive that the only way for some to pursue education is to die for their country is a crime. If majority of your citizen view being part of army is only for poor people, your country does not deserve to be protected because obviously not enough people willing to fight for it. Turning your citizens into slaves and sending them into the meat grinder makes you a monster.

tvbusy,

After many failed attempts at TDD, I realized/settled on test driven design, which is as simple as making sure what you’re writing can be tested. I don’t see writing the test first as a must, only good to have, but testable code is definitely a must.

This approach is so much easier and useful in real situations, which is anything more complicated than foo/bar. Most of the time, just asking an engineer how they plan to test it will make all the difference. I don’t have to enforce my preference on anyone. I’m not restricting the team. I’m not creating a knowledge vacuum where only the seniors know how yo code and the juniors feel like they know nothing.

Just think how you plan to test it, anyone can do that.

tvbusy,

Russia invasion of Ukraine. They used to be number 2 army with sophisticated weapons. Now they are number 1 world laughing stock with weapons that works exceptionally well for invading Mars but not on earth.

The Best Free Apps for Spotify Users in 2023

Spotify is one of the most popular music streaming services in the world, but it can be even better with some free third-party apps that enhance your listening experience. Whether you want to discover new music, see your listening stats, or listen to songs from the past, there are apps for that. Here are some of the best Spotify...

tvbusy,

Not sure if they’re different now. I tried YouTube Music one year ago and it’s very hard to find new music. On Spotify, I can navigate from one song to a related song and another and so on. On YouTube Music, it keeps taking me back to artists and songs that I have liked before, making it very hard to find new music.

Other dev won't follow best practices, is this common?

Hello again, I’m in a situation where the one the senior devs on my team just isn’t following best practices we laid out in our internal documentation, nor the generally agreed best practices for react; his code works mind you, but as a a team working on a client piece I’m not super comfortable with something so fragile...

tvbusy,

Others have given excellent advices. I’ll approach it from management point of view:

  • If there’s management oversight, such as tech lead/engineering manager, talk to them. Don’t make any accusation. Approach it from the direction of you feeling uncomfortable with how the team is working. They will know how to solve the issue. However, any tech lead/engineering manager should have already dectected the problem and at a minimum acknowledge the issue.
  • If there’s no tech management oversight, I’d suggest you approach the senior engineer directly. I’d want to emphasize here that it has to be tech management. Non tech management won’t understand the problem and they won’t be able to solve the problem. Sometimes the senior engineer maybe under pressure to deliver and there’s nobody to split the tasks to other team members. I did this a few times in my career before I developed my skill to lead a team.
  • If it’s neither because the senior is under pressure to deliver, nor there’s management oversight, your next best bet is to seek consultantion with another senior, either in your team or another team. They maybe able help to talk to the senior.
  • Your last resort would be non tech management, or saying it another way: express that you’re not happy with your job. This won’t be much help unless others in your team doing so as well.

If all these fail, consider finding another offer. There’s no oversight, there’s no willing to inprove from the senior and there’s no chance to improve the situation from other seniors, you won’t learn much there.

tvbusy,

15 year account and happy with Lemmy here. Only going back to Reddit once in a while to make sure all my comments remain deleted.

tvbusy, (edited )

The West insisted that their weapons are not to be used inside Russia. I don’t think Ukraine would want to risk the supply of weapons for small political gains.

What are you Reading? (August 2023) (lemmy.world)

I’ve put together a collage of some books from last months What are you Reading? post. It’s mostly random, but the more discussion something gets the more it stands out to me. Going forward I’m going to make a new post every month to talk about what people are reading....

tvbusy,

Recently finished The Interdependency Series by John Scalzi. Reading Upgrade by Blake Crouch at the moment. I’m a huge fan of Murder Bot Diaries and The Bobiverse as well.

tvbusy,

I did not find old books to be any less well written than new books. In fact, I prefer to be able to go through the whole series instead of waiting for each book. Old Man’s War were one of series that I put off for a long time thinking it’s old but turned out to be one of my favorites.

tvbusy,

WEI code is already being merged while Google is trying the “finding a suitable forum” tactics. If it’s truely for open web’s benefit, why the rush?

tvbusy,

There are already some attempts but I don’t think it will work, harmful even. Best case scenario, the AI can understand the code as well as a senior engineer from another company. All they can know without the context is what was changed, which is useless. We need the reason why the commit was made, not what was changed. The info is not there in the first place for the AI to try to extract.

tvbusy,

Thank you for the reminder that I should donate to Signal for all the good things they have brought to the world.

tvbusy,

I worked as engineer for 15 years and then management for the last 2 years. The urge to go back to engineering never stop. What keeps me in management is seeing how I can create the environment where engineers are able to do their work.

If I go back to being an engineer, I won’t be able to make sure product requirements are clear, priorities are correct, team members will have a chance to practice skills they don’t get to do at work. At the minimum, protecting my engineers from stupid back to office policies that were enforced just because the CEO felt lonely one day. Would someone who has not worked as an engineer understand the feeling of stairing at the screen for 8 hours not able to start anything due to burnout is the worst feeling ever? Will they hear the grinding wheels when soneone used the wrong term during meetings?

There are just so many things that I can do for MY engineers, exactly what I wanted when I was still an engineer. I don’t trust others to provide that so I take it on myself to do it. Granted, I need support from upper level for this to happen so it’s an important aspect for me when I apply for jobs.

tvbusy,

I worked as software engineer and my boss tolerated me going to office at 2pm and leave at 9pm. It’s against company policy, certainly, but no one talked about it. It still is my most productive and happy time.

tvbusy,

This is why maintaining your account there and keep deleting your comments/posts will destroy Reddit. Do it, you have the power.

tvbusy,

Funny to think one day supporters of 2nd best army of the world is so proud that they are not losing "yet" for a 3 days "operation" that lasted one and a half year.

tvbusy,

I say it's super productive. People go to Reddit because others have already done the work to vote the best content for consumption. For majority of Reddit users who just passively consume info (and maybe vote), seeing John instead of cats will significantly reduce their interest in Reddit.

tvbusy,

CEOs tends to think they're special. They do not think they are there because of right time right place.

I work in tech and I have seen how a small change in organization structure, such as a Product Manager leaving, or adjusting how Product, Engineering and Marketing working together, having a huge impact on how the business operates. Yet most CEOs think the company is where they are because of their own decisions. It's quite the other way around: CEOs suggesting stupid policies and other people cleaning up the shit, like "let's all go back to office because I'm lonely here", despite majority of employees work remotely from another fricking country.
