What modes of transport do you really like?

For me personally, trams are right up there. Aside from the main issue of sharing the roads instead of having a dedicated line, they really make it easy to get from one part of a city to another, especially for wheelchair users. They’re usually as frequent as buses, but much faster. The stations are much more attractive...

thisfro,

What do you like about planes?

I like to see all the technical aspects of it, but the actual transportation part is so bad for me. And not to speak of the emissions it creates. I nlw try to avoid planes, trains are nearly as interesting and much more pleasant for everyone.

thisfro,

Like you can’t even look out the window and watch the control surfaces.

That I totally understand!

But planes (at least in economy) have very little space and you don’t have a real table to work/chill/play on. It’s loud, space is generally very limited and you can’t bring a lot of your own food. Also it is much darker than with large train windows.

People who read marketing emails, where do you find the time to do so? And why?

I assume there are people who read these things, otherwise companies wouldn’t send me so many of them. I seem to get daily spam from literally any company I’ve ever interacted with in any way, and they are long boys full of text and pictures that Thunderbird helpfully hides from me but I presume are full of jagged brightly...

thisfro,

What is a “marketing email”?

I like to bw notified about sales on my steam wishlist for example. I’d say that is a marketing email.

How can we trust anything from LTT at this point?

thisfro,

The landlord owns the property, the person renting possesses it.

So it is the person renting’s home, owned by the landlord.

thisfro,

They probably did, just not explicitly:

You could write (61/100)50 = 6(501/100)

It only uses the commutative property of multiplication and the fact that % is another way of writing 1/100.

Maybe also worth remembering that “x% of y” is just x/100*y

thisfro,

By what part?

Infomaniak KSuite.

I currently have all my emails with Mailbox.org and I’ve just moved my websites to Infomaniak, I’m thinking of moving my emails there too. I noted that they also have a product called KSuite which looks like a G Suite / Office 365 Online alternative. Does anyone have any experience of using it? Or are there better solutions...

thisfro,

They build on onlyoffice for the office tools and use parts of nextcloud foe the desktop sync xlient but also add custom functions. I used it briefly and it looked nice, but I have my own nextcloud server with onlyoffice, so I had no need.

I thibk they offer a free trial right? Just try it out

I’m sure there are a lot of reasons why PHP is better than Python for the backend, but I created an app wirh Symfony 5 and then an app with Django 4.

Symfony is so weird compared to Django. With Django I can just sit down and get things done. Symfony always seems to have some quirks which are mostly due to PHP (and me not knowing how to program in PHP).

That said, PHP hosting is so much easier and cheaper, this probably is important for smaller projects.

thisfro,

Many older projects don’t get migrated to containerized infrastructure and smaller businesses don’t want the overhead it creates to run a single app/webpage. Plain LAMP with FTP access is still the most common way to host I think (and thus the cheapest if you consider the amount of work that would need to be invested to containerize).

thisfro,

You don’t need a framework for either, but it makes working with both much easier!

thisfro,

The industry is surely changing, but “the industry” is mostly geared towards enterprise, because it’s where the money is. But the large amount of webpages are not enterprise pages but personal blogs, small businesses etc.

thisfro,

thisfro,

A report of 4 patients is hardly called a “study” and even less a “cure”. Anti-viral drugs may have their application in long-covid cases, but usually the side-effects outweigh the benefits.

Also the author claims in the summary:

This study presents a novel theory of sequestered COVID-19 virus in the body.

That is quite a stretch to get to from these 4 subjective reports. Neither is it novel, nor is there solid evidence in the reports.

thisfro,

That is one definition of open source

I agree that it is great to meet all these criteria, but especially restricting commercial use is a pretty reasonable thing to do

thisfro,

Nein, absolut nicht.

thisfro,

If you drink more than one beer a day on average, that is pretty close to alcoholsim. But of course it can be a lot worse.

I just don’t get why alcohol is so normalised, even though the health effects are adverse.

thisfro,

TBH, where I live, those 80km/h roads aren’t as bad as you would think. Cars slow down before bends because they anticipate that a bicycle, hiker, tractor or whatever slow moving vehicle and usually pass them with decent space.

But that is only true for less frequented roads, if there is heavy oncoming traffic and save overtaking is not possible, people will still try to squeeze through and there separated bike lanes are really important.

thisfro,

And continue to do so, that is what should get stopped.

thisfro,

An easy improvement would be protected bike lanes along those roads

thisfro,

May I introduce you to the mind blowing concept of buses?

thisfro,

Okay, maybe it won’t help you, but there sure are people who don’t commute 30+km each way and could use some part of the bike lane. Also, ebikes exist

Weather and hills really are not the main issue, I live in Switzerland. We have plenty of hills and shitty weather ;)

thisfro,

Buses are also great in rural areas. If the too few people take the bus, a small parking lot in the front of the station may actually be fine and people can ride their bikes or maybe small electric cars there. No need for AV techbro shit

thisfro,

I’m not saying a car never makes sense. But Americans go out of their way to justify using a car and refusing anything that might change that. Most people live near urban center probably in suburbs. Those are just very bad land use, but with some small changes, bikes could be reasonable to get to a somewhat close bus or train station.

nor would it be safe on country roads at night

Protected bike lanes, as I said.

I still drive almost every day to sports practices, dance classes, music lessons, or visits to the grandparents. I own a bike, as does every member of my family, but we only ride recreationally.

Are those all 50+km away?

thisfro,

As I’ve said, you’re underestimating the enormoty of the problem and the distances we travel for normal things.

Maybe, but on the other hand, some villages are so small here (couple of hundreds of residents), but they have rather frequent (hourly or more) transit. Furthermore, suburbs are definitively dense enough for buses and bikes. In between, investments for transit are needed. And sure there are areas where it is probably not feasible to do so, but only few people are affected.

thisfro,

Why do you think it will fail?

thisfro,

Good points, thanks!
