thedirtyknapkin,

oh man, when the entire fleat gets stopped in place and it’s a massive problem because everyone went flying and now zero g is making their blood pool badly even with minor injuries… they turned what most shows would’ve shown as a minor inconvenience and showed how awful it would really be.

thedirtyknapkin,

honestly, y’all should both give strange new worlds a shot. to me they’re the closest we’ve ever gotten to TOS. even moreso than TNG. and i agree that the other new treks were ass.

thedirtyknapkin,

eh, i found the game to be hollow and boring past the first handful of hours… but I didn’t get much out of the “explore the castle” experience. like, there wasn’t really anything to find. just the same boxes and puzzles but in different spots. like, imagine if instead of a little card to read about the whomping willow, instead you just get pulled into a fight if you wander too close.

the flying, one of the most important aspects of a harry potter open world game imo, wasn’t just bad, it had no thought or effort put into it at all. i made exactly as complex of a flight mechanic in 7th grade using a teaching program called Alice in like 2009.

like, every tool and mechanic in the game felt lazy or unfinished. bad puzzles lifted out of other games, all of the school rules get handwaved away because a rule and punishment system would’ve been actual gameplay and they didn’t want to spend time on that when they had models to build and marketing to do.

that’s really my issue. it feels like a game that spent 40% on building an environment, 50% on marketing, and the 10% that was left went into slapping a game into it. it’s really frustrating too, because no one is willing to talk about the game beyond the Rowling controversy. it felt like a blatant low effort cash grab to me, but everyone else either “didn’t care cause fuck rowling” or “idk, i liked it” is the most they’ve given it thought.

thedirtyknapkin,

it’s not so much about caring about Harry Potter, it’s more that exploring didn’t feel rewarding or worthwhile. it only seemed like it would be interesting if you DID care about the lore enough just to want to see it.

thedirtyknapkin,

i think they’ll still manage it with a remaster. they’ll tack on a battlepass somehow…

thedirtyknapkin,

i mean, it wasn’t that much better than rdr2 on pc… it felt very believable to me

thedirtyknapkin,

huh… so from what i can read cloudflare isn’t necessarily being the bad guy here? they have clear and reasonable policy reasons for their practices, it’s archive.is that’s digging their heals in over a certain communication protocol not used by cloudflare?

How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

thedirtyknapkin,

blahaj is a trans rights icon sort of.

thedirtyknapkin,

this took me a hot minute to get.

it’s spelled “isekai”

thedirtyknapkin,

eh, I rent them when needed because that uncle is unbearable and maybe wants to kill me these days.

thedirtyknapkin,

yeah, you’d have to homebrew a druid or artificer ability set for wedding and stuff. would be easier with druid. just call it a partial polymorph.

thedirtyknapkin,

hmm, this is more like realizing your preferred language doesn’t have a word for a thing and deciding you want one.

thedirtyknapkin,

i just had one that showed up and started asking to to a “sound of freedom” watch party after playing one game…

thedirtyknapkin,

honestly, if you want a more modern show without any baggage you need to get over if you aren’t used to watching pre 2000 tv, watch strange new worlds. imo it’s the only modern trek that even remotely captures the star trek vibe. and i think it nails it…

it may be sacrilege to say that, but i genuinely think it’s the best overall presentation. if you like it, you’ll probably like the older ones too, and might find it easier to approach them if you can get hooked by the very high production value new show.

thedirtyknapkin,

it will probably work like d:os2’s honor mode. a perma death hardcore mode.

thedirtyknapkin,

i love many of these, but a family crest on a field of color isn’t necessarily the most creative design, but i really like the consistency and history behind some is these. like some of these were flown during the warring states period. that alone makes them kinda cool.

that said, ishikawa looks like a b2b tech company logo.

thedirtyknapkin,

i mean, that’s the audience that needs to hear this message the most…

thedirtyknapkin,

Oh ikr? that’s been killing me the entire run of snw.

thedirtyknapkin,

hey now, there’s also goat milk among others.

thedirtyknapkin, (edited )

I’ve got a really unscientific answer that feels good in my head.

culture is so deeply ingrained and large that only two things could change it:

1: slow change from within

2: war/genocide

cults on the other hand are small enough and new enough and not deeply enough ingrained. it feels possible to defeat them in the “marketplace of ideas” as it were.

even if that’s not quite true, even if it’s not actually easier to argue can against scientology. it feels like it should be.

that’s why there’s such a difference in criticism too. because it comes down to “well what do you think should be done about it then?” it’s pretty clear that you can’t argue a person out of such a deeply rooted cultural belief.

also, it’s about who you’re criticizing in relation to yourself. a white person living in America has way more ground to stand on calling another white American out for having bad beliefs and practices. this is because you can understand where they come from and the culture around them

ultimately there is no concrete “good” and “bad”. for you to enforce your idea of that onto a people who universally agree that your “good” is actually bad then you’re the bad guy no matter how right you think you are. no matter how much your people think you’re right for what you do that’s cultural imperialism/plain old regular imperialism.

thedirtyknapkin,

hey man, this is clearly a brand new game. have you seen the bugs?

thedirtyknapkin,

oh i was just making a joke about modern games being buggy at launch, making this clearly a modern game.

thedirtyknapkin,

yeah yeah, we know… she’s gonna burst into flames over it.

thedirtyknapkin,

hmm, I mean, the law does explicitly mention discrimination based on ancestry. the caste system is just a structure of ancestral discrimination. one could argue that caste is interchangeable with ancestry for the purpose of this law. i can see why he wouldn’t want a different law to ban every synonym and foreign language word for a thing that’s already banned.

thedirtyknapkin,

I’d start with any torrent that you ever struggled to get seeders for. then i like to try and hit some kinda older classic type stuff that i like and want others to see as well. tough to give any other thoughts without knowing what you DO like to torrent lol. only knowing what you don’t doesn’t get us far.

thedirtyknapkin, (edited )

yeah, he just kept asking forever in early access. and there were waaaay less magical items. i think this is one of those that kinda got a reputation from early access that didn’t hold as true after release. like shadowheart being cold and mean to you.

thedirtyknapkin,

oh idk, if his kids grew up and continued his legacy we’d probably be better off. this was the work of corporations that existed before him and their greed.

thedirtyknapkin,

depends on what you consider crime. if we go by actual money stolen through wage theft or unpayed taxes, then corporate America simply is the criminals.

thedirtyknapkin,

who do you think is using literally anything else other than tech people?

thedirtyknapkin,

oh yeah, I’ve been fighting hard to keep only important shit in my notifications for years decades

edit: shit does Lemmy not use markdown?

thedirtyknapkin,

i mean, the fact that we never heard about this pretty much shows that it wasn’t a success.

contrary to men being known for being horny, they read almost no horny books. erotic literature is like over 90% female readers. don’t ask me why, but men just don’t like to read their smut the same way women do. so no, i don’t think this ever had any chance of succeeding unless it was a movie instead, but how often do movies that are only about women being hot actually succeed anymore?

thedirtyknapkin,

H!, that might do it lol.

thedirtyknapkin,

exaggeration of things like that can be really good to get your point across. especially for people reading on release that haven’t necessarily looked at the precious spacing in a couple days.

I still don’t think you exaggerated it nearly enough. think of it like a cartoon, if you want to show her backing away, then have her press against the wall, or all the way down an alley, or maybe some little motion cues like step step step leading backwards. ooh, or you could try the manga thing where they just have like shock lines outlining where they just were.

don’t worry about physical logic being grounded, and don’t try to by visually subtle. if you have a visual point to make it’s usually better to make it almost painfully obvious. slap the reader with it to make sure they get it.

thedirtyknapkin,

yeah, like others have been saying. it’s exciting, even though the actual plot is very different. to me, they kept its soul and even modernized the science.

thedirtyknapkin,

he definitely puts his own agenda into his show. like, with COVID, he only invited guests with one opinion. he picked the anecdotes and every part of the show that wasn’t pure interview. he very very clearly and strongly wanted to push that vaccines are bad and COVID is overblown. that was not a guest doing that.

thedirtyknapkin,

the only one capable of repairing these kinds of giant ships apparently. that kind of infrastructure probably takes years to make.

thedirtyknapkin,

i think letterkenny might have the most realistic representation of “the dark web”

buncha tweakers in their mom’s basement with a nerd friend that helps them look at onion sites so they can feel like edgelords without actually buying anything.

thedirtyknapkin,

that’s why most games choose not to release on it. this is still a greedy decision.

thedirtyknapkin,

the point isn’t that it should cost less, it’s that it shouldn’t have been released to begin with AND it costs more than most games. the price isn’t really the problem, it just compounds on it to make it all seem worse.

thedirtyknapkin,

damn you for making me notice, but it totally is…

thedirtyknapkin,

one important tidbit in this whole situation that sheds a lot of light on where and why is adopted: webp is Google’s horse, jpegxl is adobe’s horse. that’s why jpegxl has poor web support, and why webp pisses off designers.

thedirtyknapkin,

eh, it’s just two stubborn corporate entities trying to throw their weight around. the only reason adobe looks bad here is because Google is winning. they both stubbornly refuse to allow the other’s standard on their platforms.

jpegxl is the better format, without a doubt, but adobe is a fool if they think they can strongarm Google.

to me, adobe is being foolish, but they’re both equally being evil.

thedirtyknapkin,

eh, plastic memories is to sad anime what Michael Bay is to explosions.

too on the nose, in your face, and not very clever with it. they beat you over the head with “look at how sad this is” the whole time and it loses its impact.

thedirtyknapkin,

i haven’t seen pancreas, belle, or little busters, but I differently like everything on that list. it’s funny how these shows impact people differently.

to me your lie in April is one of the less sad ones on the list. to me that show is more about acceptance and moving on. maybe it’s because I’ve never dealt with anyone with a terminal illness like that. my nurse friend adored violet evergarden, but didn’t find your lie sad to AT ALL. she simply dissociated herself from the sadness of terminal illness so she can do her job. the show was just boring to her.

I personally find a silent voice to be the saddest of those. a big part of that for me is the voice acting and the way they convey emotion, but also the way the story slowly escalates the emotional scenes from a quiet admission to a shaky angry scream or whatever. i think I also find the characters to be more believable than many anime with that large of a cast. not so much in that they act more like real people, but i find their circumstances and the ways react to them to feel… almost insightful?

thedirtyknapkin,

to the problem was more that it was too fast. came on too strong and quickly with trying to make you sad without getting you into the world or characters first. like there was nothing to the show outside of it trying to bate you into feeling sad.

that said, I’m glad you liked it. not trying to shit on you. i like one piece and that anime is objectively yeah.

thedirtyknapkin,

lmao, they could’ve made this a completely valid and not creepy criticism by instead saying “i hate how every npc has the same exact body model”
