tarjeezy,

Alkaline batteries are the crappy ones that leak. Get the more expensive lithium batteries, or go full on rechargeable ones, and you can leave them in without worrying about your device getting ruined.

tarjeezy,

Star Trek memes and shitposts

What could that possibly mean??

Best external SSD for high-uptime use?

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of an external SSD that’d last me a while being plugged into my incredibly simple SBC home server. I’ve done a bit of research but haven’t found much information about USB-connected SSDs and their longevity in terms of 24/7 use....

tarjeezy,

Somewhat related, I’m so annoyed that my USB 3.0 SATA adapter doesn’t pass S.M.A.R.T. data. Didn’t even think to check for such a deficiency. Just another thing to watch out for when buying these adapters.

How to seed properly and safely? [India]

I heard that in some countries you can get fined for using torrents or seeding beyond a certain limit (Das Deutschlandlied intensifies). How to seed so that no idiot government would get hands on the fact that you are downloading torrents? I am pretty sure I can do this using Tails OS but what else? Is there a safe way to SEED...

tarjeezy,

Apparently all that data is included in the ActivityPub protocol. On Kbin, every post has an Activity button that shows every user (even those on other instances) that upvoted/downvoted/saved that post. So if a Lemmy post happens to federate to Kbin, all that info can be seen publicly by anyone.

tarjeezy,

Look up the instructions for your mail provider to set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records in your DNS so email services know which emails sent from your domain are actually legit. Without those records telling email servers what’s valid and how to handle what’s not, it’s basically the Spiderman pointing at Spiderman meme.

tarjeezy,

If you haven’t already tried a USB 2.0 flash drive, give that a go. I find they are less finicky to boot from than some 3.0 drives.

tarjeezy,

They couldn’t read your comment, unfortunately. All they saw on their screen was:

P_______e_n i_ ___ _ _s

Edit: damnit lemmy removes extra spaces

tarjeezy,

Linux Mint specifically excludes the snap store due to the many criticisms people have already mentioned here. Doc refers to version 20, but I believe it’s still the same in the current version. Not sure about other ubuntu-based distros though.

tarjeezy,

I just use Firefox Sync. Works on all those platforms.

tarjeezy,

“What’s a checkbox? Oh, you mean that thing we use to trick users into ‘consenting’ to telemetry?”

tarjeezy,

Yea, I didn’t like that they are going to drop support in the next version or whatever. Not sure if it’s their intended replacement, but Wireguard is installed by default in TrueNAS Bluefin. I recently switched to that, and I find the performance is way better than OpenVPN.

tarjeezy,

What are you using to monitor wireguard?

tarjeezy,

I mostly just want to log connections and IPs to have a record of things.

tarjeezy,

My (albeit, somewhat older) j model hits 100% cpu just logging into the web UI. Synologys are nice, but definitely stay away from their budget models.

tarjeezy,

In my best Janeway voice: “DEW IT.

tarjeezy,

Closed. If there’s a fire in the other parts of your house, you’ll have more time to be alerted and escape.

tarjeezy,

You’d set your firewall rules to only accept requests from the cloudflare datacenter IPs for those port forwards. So, the ports would be otherwise blocked to anyone else trying to access them directly.

tarjeezy,

The cynic in me:

“Prime Video and Music streaming will no longer be bundled with Amazon Prime membership. But you’ll still pay the same amount every year, and pay more if you want those services back. It’s a win for everybody!”

tarjeezy,

Maybe they already replaced their Writers, Authors, and Proofreaders, and generated the whole thing using ChatGPT.

tarjeezy,

I’m not racist, one of my friends is Black Orion!

tarjeezy,

While I normally prefer Linux Mint, Fedora was the only distro that worked with all touch features out of the box on my IdeaPad Flex 5. Other distros I tried out (Mint, Ubuntu, Manjaro, OpenSUSE) had some issue or another that required tweaks: Second-class touch support, like the cursor jumping to where you tap instead of real tap input, applications not drag-scrolling, and the keyboard not re-enabling after flipping back from tablet mode.

tarjeezy,

“join-lemmy.com”

It’s join-lemmy.org… .com leads to nowhere.

tarjeezy,

Good luck, and thanks for all your hard work. I don’t know if you already saw this, but it looks like this might be the vector for the account compromise. If that’s the case, I don’t think 2FA is enough to protect, because it’s exfiltrating the session cookies of someone already logged in. Seems like the precaution is for admins to avoid clicking any suspicious links. I realize the irony of sharing a link about this, but at least it’s to a thread on this instance.

tarjeezy,

The encoded string contains the URL zelensky dot zip. Zip is one of the newer top-level domains. It itself is not a zip file, but I am not going to visit that site to find out whatever treasures it has to offer…

tarjeezy,

Good luck, I’m behind 7 proxies

tarjeezy,

Yea I’ve got both .zip and .mov blocked on my pihole

tarjeezy,

Really hoping it’s “only” redirecting to offensive sites, and not to malware. I got redirected a few times, before I closed my browser.

tarjeezy,

WTF, the activity button is also on comments. So you can literally see a full list of users who upvoted or downvoted you.

I’m guessing it was done for transparency, but it just seems ripe for abuse. People can take things like downvotes way too seriously. I’ve seen unhinged users on Reddit go harassing a commenter who disagreed with them.

I do not like this “feature”.
