streetfestival,

Removing downvoting feels intuitively wrong to me (eg, I believe that dissent is a really important part of a healthy democracy). If all those mega-corp platforms are removing downvoting, then I’m pretty confident my intuition on this matter is correct

streetfestival,

Great write up! Great photos! The snowy owl reminds me of a seal #superbowl

streetfestival,

Great journalism. From what I’ve witnessed following North American news these last two months though, it’s probably the tip of the iceberg

streetfestival,

I think Tidal scores the best among music streaming services in terms of compensating artists. I switched from Spotify to Tidal several months ago and have no regrets

'A no-brainer solution': Canada bolsters fight against powerful pollutant methane to help country reach climate goals (www.ctvnews.ca)

Canada is ramping up its climate battle by strengthening its regulations for methane, a greenhouse gas that environmental experts say has a more potent warming effect than carbon dioxide, as the country aims to reduce oil and gas methane emissions by at least 75 per cent by 2030.

streetfestival,

I wish I had any belief in this. It sounds like complete greenwashing. Canada hasn’t reduced greenhouse emissions since the 1990s. I think most oil and gas methane emissions are poorly measured and reported. 75% reduction in 6 years lol

streetfestival,

I’m not too knowledgeable of politics. As PM, is it actually Trudeau’s decision whether he’ll be the candidate next election and not a political equivalent of a Federal Liberal board of directors that’s pretty independent of the PMO?

streetfestival,

From the FF industry’s perspective, it doesn’t need to lower emissions to work. It only needs to help reassure people (who lean towards or support climate change denialism) that maintaining our dependence on fossil fuels and continuing to develop more projects isn’t incompatible with the survival of our species. This is a PR thing more than anything else

streetfestival,

I abandoned after Blizzard after they stole a game I paid for (WC3) by uninstalling it from my computer without my consent. How does one get their hands on the non shitified version?

Poilievre opens up 15 point lead over Trudeau on preferred Prime Minister tracking (Nanos) (nanos.co)

Never invade Russia in the winter. Never fight a land war in Asia. Never go for a third term as Prime Minister in Canada. It makes the electorate hate you. I don’t complain much about his policies, but Trudeau is screwing his own party over and now we might end up with the Trumpiest of Canadian politicians as PM.

streetfestival,

Agreed. Except this might be useful info for the LPC. If Trudeau’s trailing PP by 15 points, maybe it’s hard to ignore that a new figurehead is needed for them to be competitive in the election. With all the climate change denialism going on, it’d be so disheartening to elect PP 😔

streetfestival,

That is such a funny image of Hank - pissed off look and posture, beer in front of him, tie loosened. He’s got something to say to somebody

streetfestival,

New to me term: “Inflation isolation”

Inflation and high-interest rates appear to be causing an “inflation isolation” phenomenon, as half of Canadians are staying home more often (51%) and a third are spending less time socializing (35%) or with friends to save money (30%). This has also led one in five Canadians to feel a sense of social isolation (20%) or a sense of loneliness (19%). In addition, four in 10 have also noted that the current economic conditions have led to increased stress (42%) and anxiety (39%).

streetfestival,

This event may have been necessary to terrorize me (someone not at those protests) into believing - whether true or false - that if I say “Palestine” or “two-state solution” (among other phrases) on the public record, in Canada, that I will be unsafe.

In recent Canadian news we’ve heard of an MPP, an art director at the AGO, and a medical resident at U Ottawa disciplined to varying extents for expressing concerns about what’s happening to the people in Gaza. We also know that Bell Media has forbidden all broadcast outlets for mentioning “Palestine” and provided other instructions for how to present relevant news coverage.

But this… Toronto Police raids in the middle of the night (as used for armed gangs) for the alleged crimes of vandalism with water soluble paint and protests that haven’t contained any true antisemitism from what I’ve read so far and by my interpretation is legitimately terrorizing. It is for sending a message - that there is a penalty for questioning the mainstream narrative around a geopolitical conflict/crisis halfway across the world.

Forgive me for venting. I feel so unsettled by this. Intersectionally, I’m pretty removed from the issue: I have pale white skin, Western European ethnicity, was born in Canada, am a citizen, and I’m agnostic. Yet I feel very impacted by the mainstream narrative around what’s happening in Gaza and the surrounding policing of that narrative. Maybe that’s because I am a critical thinker, and that feels very much under attack right now. This intended-to-intimidate police raid really undermines my sense of free speech in this country. Also, I could imagine that some Canadians who are non-citizens, Arabic, or Muslim or Jewish might feel even more threatened by this stuff than me

streetfestival, (edited )

I feel like I’ve witnessed/learned something from the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the Canadian response. (There are many examples of this in history, but this may be the first one that’s really commanded my attention.) The less people (average Canadians) know about the history of something (Israel-Palestine) the more they will tend to uncritically accept the dominant narratives about something (that may be far removed from reality, international law, etc.)

streetfestival,

I agree it’s less effort. I think it’s also safer (and most know this at least unconsciously) to adopt the dominant opinion as one’s own than it is to challenge those in power or their narratives or to stand up for those without power - which can be alienating. Being morally and/or factually correct is an independent matter

streetfestival,

I can’t help but associate a term like ‘Unrigged’ with the alt-right movement of our neighbours to the south.

No kidding! (it sounds very alt-right in general)

streetfestival,

This looks neat! Pretty progressive content at the moment. We’re facing/about to face a news crisis. We need novel solutions to connect quality journalists to interested readers. Co-op type platforms like this might work well. This site has very little in the way of tracking (i.e., anti-privacy) on it too - 1/10th what you’d find on a mainstream site 👍

streetfestival,

The policing of publicly stated ideas about what’s going on the the West Bank and the doublespeak in how the term anti-semitism is being used lately is chilling.

Meanwhile… Wanda Nanibush, an Indigenous person, was probably ‘let go’ from a prominent position in a government-funded art gallery for calling out colonialism in another part of the world - how very colonialist

streetfestival,

This is really interesting. We’ve seen an Ontario MPP censured and kicked out of her party, and an Ontario medical resident disciplined to some extent for similar comments. Who can fire these high school students to prevent them from speaking truth? I miss that security myself, but it’s nice to be inspired by the youth of today

streetfestival,

This is a really moving and inspiring comic! I really felt for the cardinal when it was angrily reading the book, and then felt so happy for it when it was enjoying the admiration of the Oregonians. Wholesome!

streetfestival, (edited )

The whole (brief) press release is worth reading IMO, but here’s a snippet:

ICJP LWGCA [International Council of Jewish Parliamentarians International Centre of Justice for Palestinians Legal Working Group for Canadian Accountability] calls on the Government of Canada to end its complicity in war crimes by calling for a ceasefire, canceling all arms exports permits to Israel, prosecute those recruiting Canadian volunteers for Israel’s armed forces, and prevent Canadian charities from using donations to benefit Israel’s armed forces.

streetfestival,

I appreciate the correction - you’re completely right. The group behind this is indeed, International Centre of Justice for Palestinians. I overlooked the fact that the different groups might use the same acronym - not my brightest moment. Thank you for pointing this out!

streetfestival,

Thanks for your comment, I’m curious about the video! I guess this community doesn’t have a Piped bot. Can you provide the name of the video?

streetfestival,

You’re a legend - thank you!

streetfestival,

I love the way the False Knees artist gives expressions to birds. Seems so believable, funny and adorable!

You’re so right!!

streetfestival,

I use shrewd as a compliment. It’s a resume/CV type word

streetfestival,

We cannot allow genocidal wars to be pressed in the modern world.

You’re aware of what’s going on in Gaza right?

I think in an increasingly multicultural Canada, the white-superiority, Eurocentric, colonialist values and perspectives that Remembrance Day conjures up feel outdated and oversimplified

streetfestival,

White-breasted waterhens are found in South and Southeast Asia. They’re part of the rail family, like moorhens as you mentioned. I agree this is a really interesting/exotic looking bird. Its long legs and overall proportions aren’t like any birds I’ve seen in Canada

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-breasted_waterhen

streetfestival,

This made me chuckle :)

streetfestival,

I remember someone commenting recently in the context of US politics that conservatives think it’s fair to judge progressives as a whole by their most fringe member yet think it fair to excuse elected conservative nutjobs (like Trump) as too fringe to represent the conservative tent.

The double standard is shocking, as this humanitarian crisis has very powerfully revealed. Some memes would fit the ‘Western’ response well, like the Drake one or the Gordon Ramsay one. But no matter how much politicians want to treat this as a PR opportunity, I haven’t lost sight of the genocide and immensity of human suffering that is really going on

streetfestival,

You know they don’t collect the leather after the cows die of natural causes, right?

streetfestival,

The idea of an international diplomat trade, like in pro sports, is really funny to me. I don’t know if Canada and the US could get a Trudeau-Sanders deal done right now, but I could see interest on both sides and some discussion

streetfestival,

Affordability issues aside, I think there’s another thing driving New Canadians away. Our immigration system seems to prioritize entry of people with really high levels of education and, depending on the industry, that education may not be valued/competitive in Canada, compared to their previous country. The result is that these New Canadians often end up doing much less skilled work than they trained for and would understandably be very disappointed as a result. Off the top of my head, I’ve known 3 engineers and 3 medical doctors in this situation. Meanwhile, there are industries (e.g., construction, I believe) where we have shortages of skilled workers in Canada (and thus good opportunities for New Canadians), and I’m pretty sure our immigration system isn’t really responsive

streetfestival,

History is written by the victors, and the news and social media are controlled by the billionaires

streetfestival,

I hear ya. In that case, I’d say Immigration Canada shouldn’t value those PhDs either. I guess I think that the immigration department should be steeped in job market and related data. E.g., what kind of skills do we need, how recognizable is foreign training (at school-specific levels) in the field in Canada

streetfestival,

Amazing shot! Beautiful bird! I love the green/turquoise on the face. Thanks for all the great bird posts Ada! I’m in Canada, and it’s really neat seeing birds in Australia that look so exotic to me

streetfestival,

Based on the facial expressions and clothes, I’d say the episode would be one where they start their own evangelical program on a local TV network to make money
