The reason for Android's Notification system being better than iOS, is solely due to the ability to turn off individual aspects of an application's notifications.

Google, the poor multi-billion dollar scrappy startup that maintains Android, made a payment app that has one notification setting, "Google Pay". So all the ads, promotions, everything.

3rd party apps like PhonePe & Paytm have a better system.

How do you manage to maintain this OS?

@MishaalRahman @androidfaithful @android @android

soulfirethewolf,

Android notifications are definitely nice. I just hope they eventually get the focus functions from iOS. I know Samsung already has it but still would be nice to have a built-in version

soulfirethewolf,

Numbers 2 and 3 act like these are things that you can easily just stop

soulfirethewolf,

Yeah I would trust them. But I don’t think I would use them because I just find their mail service to have too much friction in a lack of interoperability with clients unless you not only pay money, but also download a whole extra program just to decrypt your email. It’s essentially a walled garden

soulfirethewolf,

Librewolf isn’t just a debloated version of Firefox. It’s built with a completely different goal of being extra locked down for privacy. More so than the defaults of Firefox. Also, it doesn’t even include auto update functionality unless you’re using a package manager.

soulfirethewolf,

We literally just want passkeys and native PWA’s (add-ons do not count), and an interface optimized for Android tablets. And I refuse to use Firefox again until these things are added.

This is incredibly out of scope for a browser feature set.

soulfirethewolf,

That’s good, isn’t it?

It is, but it’s also not for everyone

Also, I strongly don’t expect everyday users to use package managers. And personally, I like having notifications in the app whenever it’s time to update so I can take action right there.

soulfirethewolf,

but firefox needs users to keep google from having complete control over the web.

Okay, but then what does that make Apple with Safari powered by WebKit (and it’s mandated use on iOS)? In addition to the few and between browsers that make use of it like GNOME Web.

soulfirethewolf,

I would love to self-host something like that. But I do not have a good enough GPU to do something like that

soulfirethewolf,

I literally just want better support for extensions again

The sooner Android accepts RCS is dead, the sooner we can choose the next messaging platform that matters (www.androidpolice.com)

I’m just sitting here frustrated because I’m wanting my family to move away from messaging me over SMS (they mainly use iOS), but they refuse to download any extra apps. But Google’s RCS really doesn’t look like a solution either since it mainly just seems to be a way of enforcing Android as an ecosystem, and they...

soulfirethewolf,

I would definitely get a Chromebook, but only once you can change the default browser from Chrome without needing to do any weird workarounds like Android apps

soulfirethewolf,

It’s just a running gag. Describing the rule of “you must post before you leave”

soulfirethewolf,

Please just put the 30 million into improving the browser. Not all this dumb stuff

I Tested an HDMI Adapter That Demands Your Location, Browsing Data, Photos, and Spams You with Ads (www.404media.co)

An iPhone to HDMI adapter was discovered that, when plugged in, runs a program prompting users to download an app. This EZ Cast app collects extensive personal data and sends it to China for ad targeting. It requires location access, photos, and installs tracking cookies. The adapter appears designed to mimic official Apple...

soulfirethewolf,

Exactly. If you don’t, they’ll try to cut corners and wind up with something bad

soulfirethewolf,

I really think that on the list of worst single points of failure, DNS is not one of them. Given how easy it is to actually switch. And given that cloudflare outages are not nearly as common, The times they do happen usually are only for half an hour or so.

soulfirethewolf,

It’s funny really. They probably could continued growth had Tim Sweeney just swallowed his pride and accepted the 30% commission rate. Instead, the game has a nearly non-existent prominence on mobile because of it.

soulfirethewolf,

I thought these things were only in goat simulator

soulfirethewolf,

What convinced me to switch to Android was a growing frustration with Background App Refresh on iOS

soulfirethewolf,

These are so easy to root, I dont know why not everybody does it.

Probably because not everyone has a valid reason to root. What about people who use GrapheneOS? Rooting does involve valid security risks that doesn’t make it suitable for every single person.

soulfirethewolf,

Wouldn’t this technically qualify as reverse engineering?

soulfirethewolf,

I personally don’t use Firefox as anything except a spare whenever a page doesn’t load right in Vivaldi. Not only because I strongly dislike the way Mozilla itself is run (I’m not even going to get into their financial records) but also because of it’s glacial development speed. Mozilla does pave the road in some ways with stuff like mobile extensions and an unprecedented amount privacy features. But it still takes them forever to do some of the most basic stuff. Still no native PWA’s, Passkeys are still under development. It mildly feels understandable why people don’t feel like testing with Firefox as much as they used to.

Even cutting Google’s monopoly over the internet out of the equation, Firefox still doesn’t feel that good. Sure, it might be the fastest browser on the market at the moment. But for a company being paid 450k for a search engine deal by the very thing that Firefox users hate, what gives with the amount of ads engrained in search and bookmarks, the occasional popups for Mozilla VPN/ FF Relay. And yes, I know you can turn them off, but it’s ridiculous that a FOSS product even has them to begin with. Also how difficult it feels to be involved in the development of all Firefox products over on Mozilla Connect + Bugzilla + GitHub.

I have nothing against gecko based browsers, but until I see something truly stunning, I don’t really want to bother. I know Librewolf exists and solves some of the problems with modern Firefox (also being even more hardened than Firefox), but given Librewolf is also a hobby project that deliberately doesn’t accept donations nor even provide an auto update mechanism on macOS (the main system I use, in combination with my pixel devices), the bus factor is too strong for me to consider.

The Pixel Tablet is actually just a few spare parts in a half-empty body [article headline] (arstechnica.com)

I am not sure where I land on this issue, I am not entirely sold that it should have been filled to the brim and packed tightly but it does seem like they could have done better either for repairability or at least having things like a headphone jack and maybe better speakers (I have read that speakers can do better with more...

soulfirethewolf,

Well, that would explain why my device feels so cool to the touch all the time (aside from the corner where the SoC is

soulfirethewolf,

Roblox has been trying to move away from being a game for kids, and more towards all ages.

Specifically, by verifying with their third party service and your ID (kind of creepy, but probably the only real way to still remain coppa compliant), you can access more mature experiences and use voice chat. And they’re predicting that online daters will proceed to evolve into getting actual real life relationships.

soulfirethewolf,

Mozilla can’t listen to it’s users and Apple only makes Safari available on Apple devices

soulfirethewolf,

Most people on fedi will complain about there not being enough browser diversity and then immediately start worshipping and putting Firefox on a pedistal and complaining if anyone uses anything else

soulfirethewolf,

Counter opinion: I think the rounded corners look nice. And do a good job matching up with the windows 11 aesthetic

soulfirethewolf,

I have no idea if this is going to trickle back and benefit America at all

soulfirethewolf,

Most of Vivaldi is already open source. The only parts that aren’t are the front end. And that part is apparently just minified JavaScript

soulfirethewolf,

I hope it gets a US release with antenna designed for US networks

soulfirethewolf,

I hope it gets a US release

soulfirethewolf,

Yeah, but they also mention that if you choose to install stock android onto it instead of their e/OS. They will void your warranty :/

Google just made it a lot easier for people to begin automating their smart home (www.engadget.com)

Google has really tried to go all in on automation since the rollout of its redesigned Home app in May. There’s been the introduction of a new script editor, Nest Cam Indoor integration and, now, a whole slew of new routines to use. The company has announced 18 new routines — half starters and half actions — immediately...

soulfirethewolf,

That’s why you should use home assistant instead

soulfirethewolf,

Home assistant is still better for automation. I only really use the Google Home app because it has a nicer UI for controlling stuff.

soulfirethewolf,

Also, it’s stupid you still can’t use the nest hubs SOLI Chip to perform motion automations. Get it will still bring up that screen every evening when you get close to it

soulfirethewolf,

Pretty much.

People very frequently complain about AI taking the jobs of artists. But if the money was never actually going to be put on the table for artists to claim, I really don’t think that was going to help much.

That doesn’t mean I hate artists what do, absolutely not. It’s just that artists are people and people are limited in how much they can do at any single time.

For the past couple of months. I’ve currently been waiting on multiple artists to finish up their commission queue. And one of which I’m worried I’ll have to turn away because of a variety of life changes in my life that’s led me to losing my job and me having reduced income.

As of right now, the costs of generating a picture with a tool like Stable Diffusion or DALL-E has been pretty low, the former even being free if you have the right hardware. And these systems manage to be almost always available, as well as being capable of working in a matter of seconds.

Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that these tools are only good at painting the bigger picture. They have a tendency to choke on the smaller details. And I would personally rather wait for an actual person to be available to work on something original that’s also capable of filling a niche that AI models have yet to be trained on.

soulfirethewolf,

I still do think that the bill is more about having the right to repair from more sources, as opposed to the right to an easy repair. I definitely do encourage devices to be engineered in a way that allows them to be repaired by as many people as possible, and that the skills to work with hardware should definitely be taught more in schools. But I still think that there’s a lot of people who don’t know the whole process of finding decent quality parts, and will just stoop to somewhere like Wish or AliExpress for something like a battery because they don’t feel like paying for something they don’t fully understand, they just know that they need a new one. And then put themselves at risk if the battery in question wasn’t made up to the correct safety standards. So I do think it’s somewhat of a responsibility to warn people about shopping for parts. But there should definitely be less restrictions on Apple hardware and the law should be rewritten to put price caps on genuine parts to keep them within reach of most people.

soulfirethewolf,

It’s funny because who wouldn’t smoke pot doing hacking for a living? That stuff’s hard.

soulfirethewolf,

I personally love Vivaldi. It’s really been the only browser for me that’s met everything I wanted. Customizable, looks good. And has a whole synchronization suite as well.

I honestly just don’t want to use Firefox at this point because I’m sick of Mozilla and their bad financial records (in 2021, the CEO gave themselves a 5 million bonus. And a good majority of their money still comes from Google), and the fact that they’ve kind of shifted their priorities away from Firefox in favor of more political activism activities. Which is annoying because Firefox is still the only other browser that has everything I need.

Yeah I do wish Vivaldi was fully open source but they’ve already mentioned that a lot of their stuff is besides their UI (which they’re keeping private for branding reasons). I think Its kind of ridiculous, but it’s not that big of a deal I guess since right now Vivaldi is just Chromium with an extra coat of paint.
