socphoenix,

You know someone will state that a “common Hamas tactic” any minute now

socphoenix,

Well didn’t take long just found this in a different post…

socphoenix,

You might try adding a cache drive instead. It can help lessen the memory usage zfs needs to maintain speed. My server is spinning rust with an ssd drive attached to the pool as cache.

Command would be “zpool add pool_name cache /dev/sdX” where pool_name is the pool you want the cache on, and /dev/sdX is the empty drive you want to use with it (or partition). Make sure to encrypt this drive before setting this up, my knowledge is zfs doesn’t do that for you.

see here for a bit more information on caching.

socphoenix,

It’s 512GB of ssd cache plus 128GB of ram, so for now that’s been enough

socphoenix,

I think he’s talking about this, but it’s very clearly just a normal fundraising pitch that doesn’t even hint at a current issue with funding.

socphoenix,

This honestly still feels premature for a server based OS. I rely on x forwarding and an rdp server for some tasks, and as far as I know Wayland still doesn’t really have support for either of those.

socphoenix,

Gotcha on the forwarding, my issue with rdp forwarding is I want a server like xrdp, so users don’t need to be logged in locally, which I haven’t seen googling yet.

socphoenix,

I haven’t used windows regularly since windows vista, is there an actual difference between those two version in performance?

socphoenix,

Thanks!

socphoenix,

Even if you take his statement as true it’s essentially arguing that historically genocides have happened and therefore Israel should get free rein to do one.

socphoenix,

Fun fact: they used to line the wind chests that held the pressurized air and pipes with asbestos until around the 1970s… so yeah you can technically get cancer from pipe organs.

socphoenix,

Any idea if they controlled for other factors? Like were those who are the most red meat also the most likely to overeat etc?

It sounds fascinating but there’s almost no details unless you purchase a day pass to view the journal

socphoenix,

I know you the author doesn’t seem to want to hear about Home Assistant, but it does have the HomeKit integration they want and you have the fine tuned control the want too!

[I made] basic white bread (lemmy.ca)

https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/1c8032ab-4e92-4f34-b58c-be8dac675502.jpegI came across this recipe for basic white bread (what the recipe called it), is a nice sandwich bread. Not to crumby and firm pain in taste. But it’s easy and cheap to make. I didn’t take pictures but used the dough from the other loaf to make cinnamon...

socphoenix,

I pay $2 a week in flour and maybe $3 for dried fruit a week to put into home made sourdough. You can buy a 10lb. Bag of all purpose flour at all the grocery stores in town for ~ $4.

If you skip the fruit it would be about half what you’re spending, though if you want whole wheat flour that would probably double the flour cost at a minimum.

socphoenix,

Ours keeps about a week in the fridge before drying out to the point it’s crumbly, though it’s usually gone by then. Long as you have some free time it’s not usually all that scary. I only have sourdough and bread machine recipes at the moment but I can share those if you’d like them

socphoenix,

Sure and the water/milk/olive oil too but those cost pennies per serving so I didn’t really think it was worth adding.

Gas stove: .02 Olive oil: .10 Milk: .25 Rosemary: .01 Water: .00 (we never go over the minimum so no charge for water) Soap: .005 Flour: $2 (including sourdough starter usage) Brad pan: .02 (estimated wear and tear)

Total: $2.405 which was close enough to $2 for jazz.

socphoenix,

It’s free with their account using their services for up to 25 nodes. It uses direct connections where possible so your information goes straight from one device to the other without having to self host their program.

socphoenix,

It can be an ip address, if you have a static ip. If you’re planning to host this on the open internet and have a dynamic ip (home internet is most likely for this), or static and don’t want to pay for a top level domain you can use a service like noip.com for a free address like “test.ddns.net”

You can also change this after the initial setup in Nextcloud’s config.php as well as as additional domain names/ip addresses that can reach the server.

socphoenix,

Yes it can

socphoenix,

Find in your install the config.php it will listed trusted domains (or ips) and you can add as many as you want. I’ll find my config file here in a bit and paste that part of it as an example

socphoenix,

On FreeBSD the config is located in “/usr/local/www/nextcloud/config/config.php”, I’m unsure about Linux I haven’t set it up for that. But, in the config you will see a marker for “trusted domains,” I’ve set mine up for local DNS, zero-tier and local IP setup and it looks like this:

`‘trusted_domains’ =>

array (

<span style="color:#323232;">0 => 'fileserver.home.lan:9000',
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">1 => '192.168.50.30:9000',
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">2 => '10.144.117.148:9000',
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">3 => '10.1.1.7',
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">4 => 'fileserver.home.lan',
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">5 => '192.168.50.30',
</span>

), `

Edit: You can see here more info on the config file. Per that documentation on Linux it should be under “/var/www/nextcloud/config/config.php”

Also of note, for internal IP addresses you should set the server to a static IP on your router, that’s how I know my server will always be 192.168.50.30. If you’re using home internet (not a VPS or business line) you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a dynamic IP for public facing connections. For that I like noip.com because they have an app that will auto-update this so you can use the free domain name without needing to know the IP address that will change every few days. Duckdns also does this if memory serves though I think they just had a bash script you ran for this.

Is privacy possible with smart TV?

I’d like to start a discussion about TV privacy in 2023. I’ve never been interested in having a TV, but recently I was thinking of getting one. Looking into it, the privacy implications seem horrible. All the major brands seem to have cameras, microphones, and content recognition software. I can’t believe how dystopian it...

socphoenix,

It’s still just as bad. We leave ours disconnected from the internet, but a quick note here: I’ve heard of some tv’s auto-connecting to open WiFi networks if available (though ours does not and nobody near us has an open WiFi network). We just have a very generic Hisense tv from 2019 I think

socphoenix,

That is correct. Let’s say me and my dad get cancer. We both have health insurance provided by our employers.

Dad: Initial deductible (cost before insurance kicks in): $10,000

Max out of pocket (in network): $20,000

They cover initial treatment but the anesthesiologist is “out of network.” That charge goes to the separate deductible for out of network costs, dad pays $30k total, of a $500k “sticker price.”

Me: Deductible: $4,200 Max out of pocket: $4,200

Initial treatment is covered by insurance, no provider listed as out of network. Total cost to me: $4,200 out of a $500k bill.

Every insurance is different, each hospital will do different things to get extra money, and you have no way of knowing what 1 piece of the treatment is out of network until after you’ve already had the treatment. Our system sucks

socphoenix,

That looks absolutely perfect! Man I miss real keyboards on phones

[Discussion] two handed split / VR controllers similar to joy-cons on nintendo switch, but for PC?

I honestly don’t care about VR headsets or full-body tracking right now, but I would love to have a controller that’s split into two pieces like the wiimote/nunchuck duo or the joy-cons. I know Steam can connect to actual joy-cons, but the bluetooth range on official joy-cons is pretty bad, and I haven’t had any luck...

socphoenix,

Most vr controllers talk to the units base station as far as I know, so unless you actually want to have a full vr headset that’s probably a very expensive proposition. Wii controllers are also Bluetooth compatible (least with dolphin), you might look into those instead of the joy cons if they would work

socphoenix,

I’m unable to read the text I’m the image, can you post your firewall rules?

socphoenix,

Question for you: why post here, a community that is largely a help forum and refuse to answer questions from people trying to help? There’s been a few here trying.

Follow up: how can you say they are refusing to replace your deck while also saying you’re still working with them? Which is it?

From the outside looking in it’s clear something isn’t working as expected which happens with tech sometimes. Acting like the only possible option is a device replacement while not answering questions seeking to help really feels like there’s missing info here.

Edit: just looked at you last link and it appears your dock is working now?

socphoenix,

This kind of thing would be much better as text. YouTube to get a list of apps is just dumb.

Hello, I’m going to be getting a new computer soon and have thought about linux. Questions inside

With the new computer and the newer Microsoft Windows updates they have really jam packed their OS with bloat and spyware. That being said I have no idea what I’m doing with Linux, need help with where to start.? What are some general tips? I understand there’s a lot of prebuilt Linux distributions or something what are some...

socphoenix,

Focus on simple things first too! I see a ton of people talking (in other threads) about not wanting to deal with the terminal/command line and that is fine. Mint will install/set up hardware without it and includes a software store that will handle everything via the GUI. Once it’s installed check the store out and get the apps you want/need.

Then focus on one thing at a time - i.e. pick an app you need you haven’t found/setting you really want to change and start googling/asking here for tips/help. Like any OS there will be some differences to get used to but you don’t need to learn all at once!

How to make a phone secure for children without using "Spyware"?

Many parent control apps are more like Spyware and are often also exactly that, Spyware which spy on your Kids. Or Google Family Link is also a great example which you can’t remove even if you want too (as parent). I already setup a non-child-friendly blocking DNS and set the Age Limit in the Google Play Store and did all the...

socphoenix,

It’s unfortunate but in some cases you do have to accept trade offs to get what you want. Not to mention apple has that built in, while much of what’s being recommended here are custom roms and other things that are not exactly user friendly to run out of the box.

socphoenix,

Mr chromebox had the up to date info but agreed it’s a lot of work to make this work, and without tools and scripts is likely to at least have broken audio

socphoenix,

There’s a script that works for moist distros including arch now but only works for I think most laptops now

socphoenix,

Agreed. It’s not a safety issue it just won’t use the full drives capacity until they replace the other smaller drives

socphoenix,

My wife is basically tech illiterate and has 0 desire to ever use something that doesn’t just work out of the box. We’ve moved some of her software to foss (darktable over Lightroom due to their stupid subscription only model) but she’s really only comfortable on a MacBook and even then only after I’ve set the whole thing up and maintain software/os updates.

macOS also sucks for smb file shares so I have a FreeBSD jail that just does xrdp and ssh X-11 forwarding (better color matching for photos this way) and she runs a script disguised as a desktop shortcut to run her apps. The script launches an ssh session and pops up a simple program I wrote that just lists available apps like darkroom. Gives her native file speeds and 0 need to understand anything related to the OS. My rambling point here is unless you set it up so the SO doesn’t need to learn it’s likely to fail and in return you’ll be responsible for all of the maintenance. Unless you’re ok with that it’s probably not a good idea

socphoenix,

Or MacOS. They’ve made it seem like those are the only two options besides chromebooks which are just for those who don’t want to spend money.

socphoenix,

Dude that’s what an outside investigator is

socphoenix,

That’s weird I watch almost entirely tech/news/commentary that is very much on the socialist bend yet have to block far right wing channels monthly from the recommendations.

socphoenix,

That is likely a part of it it’s slowly gotten better over time. I’ve also noticed if I stop watching YouTube for a bit it starts putting those back in. I guess it assumes people will get hooked off the watch then

socphoenix,

It was a wan show a while back if I remember right (not op), but basically trashed unions and said businesses should do better and vaguely acted like all the employees of the world could just quit and find something better on a whim if things were actually bad where they worked.

socphoenix,

Was about to comment this! My Chromebook still runs chrome os but once support runs out it’ll be getting straight Linux

socphoenix,

Honestly laziness. Setting up a Linux vm works fine for light Linux apps, and ssh/rdp does everything that needs more processing power.

Given the Google web-drm thing I probably need to start looking at wiping it and putting Linux or FreeBSD or SOMETHING else but just haven’t felt like wiping a working system yet and reinstalling everything.

socphoenix,

They just updated it to say the 98 year old co-founder died “because of stress related to the raids.”

socphoenix,

We moved to a brother last (b/w) for that exact reason. Run about 8k pages through it I think and it hasn’t once complained to me

socphoenix,

A basic brother is like $20 more than the inkjets at this point, hard to justify anything else.

socphoenix,

I use moonlight occasionally and it will let me login including for the first time when using nvidias drivers for the server if that is what you’re looking for

socphoenix,

FreeBSD has had kde on riscV for a bit now, if they can do it I can’t imagine Debian et all will have much issue once they get the ball rolling.
