Help me help a coworker not be an incel?

Personal background: I strongly feel just about everyone grows up and has something shitty about them. I know growing up I definitely thought and said some less-than-ideal jokes about women, minorities, etc. And while some of that was the proverbial ‘the times’, and some was growing up in a sheltered hyper Christian southern...

Yeah one of the big things that helped me snap out was male role models teaching me that all of that masculinity crap doesn’t matter. The BEST phrase I heard was when someone said something stupid like “real men don’t like Taylor Swift” my mentor responded “Real men don’t care”. That stuck with me.

Having a man I look up to tell me that real men do whatever they like and don’t let others dictate what they can or can’t so succinctly was just a game changer. No one had worded it like that to me. Real men don’t care.

How are people still anti vax? I was told that I’d liquify in a year. No wait 2 years. No wait 3 years I’ll liquify and turn to mush. How long before they just admit they were lied to and afraid?

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

that’s called censorship.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Got it, I didn’t understand, if it’s liberals doing it its censorship, but if it’s you it’s moderation, thanks 😂

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Government probably would though.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yup, just gonna keep participating here, Lemmy will continue to improve over time and get sleeker and more appealing, and we’ll be ready the next time reddit fucks something up

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

This one dude has made this app for years and constantly updates it, fixes things, is responsive, and makes a great app. He’s now been more loyal to his users longer than Reddit has, and I personally have used his app daily for 13 years.

Yeah, I’ll happily pay for it.

FOSS is great but it doesn’t pay the rent people, this guy is doing this mostly as his main gig. This isn’t some huge corpo, it’s one guy who makes his living building the app he loves. I’m sure he’d love to make it FOSS if he didn’t have to pay bills on anything.

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar
  1. This is not a proprietary app (in the first party terms, it’s still a 3rd party app)
  • Yes Okay I get it, yes it’s proprietary, but I’m saying everyone was gleefully using proprietary 3rd party apps on Reddit, Apollo was proprietary, RIF was proprietary, proprietary was not forced on anyone. 1st party apps were forced on us all.
  1. This is literally one of the apps Reddit killed off
  2. It’s literally not being forced on anyone
scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

NPM did donations too and found that <0.01% of users paid anything, and the average for even the most used packages made on average $40 a month. That doesn’t pay a full time fry cook, let alone developer

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

This is the same crap I left /r/Linux for way back in the day, so so so many people who are all “Linux is the best way and you’re stupid for even considering windows or mac” but unable to see realities. Yes, of course I love linux and FOSS, I use it as my primary driver, but we live in a society where free work doesn’t pay for housing.

You’re exactly right, most of the “FOSS Open Source supreme” people will look at an app that was lovingly crafted for months, call it garbage, and then demand they make it free. I just can’t even with them.

Meanwhile I’d love to see the stats on how many hours a week they put into FOSS apps on their own, and if they’ve given up their jobs to code for FOSS apps for the good of the community.

I’m a developer. I code mostly proprietary stuff for my company. I’d gladly go code for FOSS projects, but so far my bank is just completely unwilling to cancel my mortgage payments, and my electricity, water, sewer, internet, they all want to be paid too, so unfortunately I’m stuck doing this.

scrubbles,

but shouldn’t I go online and complain about it loudly?

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Except Sync is way more polished than a lot of the others, has a developer I’ve trusted for years, has more features…

Also in what world do you live in where $17 a year is a lot of money, or $100 for lifetime? Is it the year 1899? We’re over here complaining about Netflix closing in on $20 a month and you’re complaining about $100 for a forever license?

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Thank you. Exactly what is happening and why I’m so exhausted. Feels like the stupid Mac vs Windows debates back in the day, with the even more annoying Linux users.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

hence why it’s pretty great that there’s a lifetime license…

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

That’s fine as your opinion, but it’s not a popular one. Many people tried lemmy and left almost immediately because they want a better UI. We come from the old usenet boards so we know what UI was like back then, but now people expect a great UI/UX to use a service. So yes, I understand the principals, but we shouldn’t demonize people who pay money for a better experience, and if you’re a developer I’m sure you know that a good UX costs some money, but a great UX costs a lot of money.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

But for a lot of people this is the best alternative. As I mentioned in another comment, people will generally pay if it gives them a good experience. I used Jerboa up until now but it did not have an easy UX like Sync has had. So yes, functionally there are alternatives, but in terms of ease of use? Sync is the best I’ve seen.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

So for one he’s adding an option to fund your instance as well, but also just because it’s an app doesn’t mean that it also doesn’t require money.

Your argument doesn’t come off as “so both should be free” but to me more like “oh yeah I’m surprised Lemmy doesn’t have an ad option”

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

So the three options for him to keep developing that we know of are 1) Ads 2) Pay for a license or 3) Fundraising. He offers 1 and 2, and 3 is well known to not work, seriously nobody donates. Check out npm fund and how so little people used it that they just removed it.

If your only argument is “I deserve things that took a lot of time and effort for free” then you aren’t getting much sympathy from me.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I’ve done some contracts there and yeah, while they are incredibly smart, there’s so much bloated corpo overhead that they are restricted by red tape. I’m not surprised a simple login takes 30 redirects at all.

I'm done with NextCloud

Just had NextCloud denying my credentials (not for the first time). I know they weren’t wrong because I’m using a password manager. Logs didn’t say much. Was about to reinstall (again, not the first time nextcloud went bonkers on me) before I tried a docker compose down && docker compose up. Lo and behold after a restart...

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I’m not done but I’m so tired of just stupid error messages that don’t help from developers. I love the open source community but for gods sake devs, handle your errors in a format that makes sense.

Nextcloud or others, it’s always the same. I either get a 200 line stacktrace that means absolutely nothing to me because the dev didn’t bother to handle the exception (like you submit a form and get a null reference back. It sure would be nice to know what field was null) or of course the infamous “Exception occurred” and nothing else.

My favorite was I tried to submit to Jellyfin a fix for one of their very opaque exceptions, keep the stack trace but rewrite the error message like “x exception occurred, do you have permissions to do that?” Or something and the PR was rejected. I just can’t even with that

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

ehh I try to keep me here and my real github separate. I’m all for exception messages being for developers especially in logs, but things also shouldn’t error silently either. This was a case where there was something different with my OS I was running and I wanted to show an error that there was a common reason for that exception being thrown. This was years ago though, so I don’t remember details

Most emotional moments in games? (SPOILERS)

Just for the heads up, this thread will probably have a lot of spoilers. I’m gonna try to go vague on spoilers for anybody that hasn’t played Hotline Miami 2. If you’ve played the game, you’ll probably know what I mean, but I’m going to say some purposefully esoteric shit to keep it out of full spoiler territory....

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

HOW DARE YOU PUT ME THROUGH THIS RIGHT NOW. I was just sitting here, enjoying some coffee, truly having a great day. I can’t handle this right now, @Xariphon

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Great advice, pre judging something is only hurting you. I don’t get people who refuse to try, what really are you gaining? What is a few seconds to try something new vs a lifetime of missing out on your new favorite food? If you don’t like it then drink a bit to wash the flavor out and move on!

My mother is especially bad at this. If it’s not in a Midwest form she won’t eat it. We went to an amazing dim sum place with her, we ordered dumplings, buns, vegetables, cuts of meat, everything. She ordered specifically chicken and noodle soup and only ate that, refusing to try anything else. I really pity her for not being able to even try anything.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I sold computers for a major big box retailer for a while, and always tried to sell honestly. So many many stupid people.

“I know you are eyeing that 250 dollar Toshiba, but I really recommend this one for 50 dollars more that has a much better processor and ram”

“Stop trying to upsell us, we’re taking this one”

Bud I wasn’t trying to upsell you. I’m saying the Toshiba is hot garbage and you’ll be back in a week complaining its slow. I know you don’t want to spend too much, which is why I memorized each computer we have, and I’m telling you take this i5 over that Celeron.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yup, exactly right, which is why I tried to be very honest with people. I wasn’t commissioned, I really just wanted them to get the best product for their use, but most took that as me trying to scam them.

And funny about the warranty lol, because yup we had to hock that too, but I chose which people I pitched what to. “Aw no you aint giving me no accident protecting warranty”. “Lady you just told me how your demonspawn kid ruined your last laptop, maybe it’s not such a bad idea to get one of these warranties”.

but dude comes in who obviously knows computers? Nah I don’t need to pitch a warranty to him

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

But why? I don’t understand people who get upset that new games come out on new console generations, they hold engines back. If you can’t afford one then wait to play those games until you can get the new one. Gaming is something that requires you to upgrade, and a new console once every 6-8 years isn’t that bad.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

That makes much more sense. As a fan, I’d urge people to wait, I can only assume a game made for a system that business forced onto an older system will feel subpar.

I’m looking at you, Cyberpunk 2077. How many of your developers begged you to only make it for PS5/XboxSeriesX?

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I keep thinking about how retirement is only… 30 years away. Yup. Only 30 more years then I get a few where I don’t have to do the mundane drudgery.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Honestly is there a downside from our perspective? News organizations will lose money in the short term, but this is meta throwing a tantrum.

Less clickbait news on social media is a good thing, less money for meta, less garbage, less engagement with social media hopefully

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I get that, but it’s not just linking, we all know most people only read the headline, and on top of that sites like Google and FB will summarize the article now too which means a good chunk of people won’t click on it. I’ll compromise that both sides are throwing a tantrum and no one is willing to just stop and say “This is how we could compromise on it”.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

are they forks? That’s what I don’t get, who controls the merge controls into Chromium’s main branch? It’s open source, but who actually says yay or nay on PRs getting in? I assume it’s Google, and the others are all forks off, but if it makes it into the main branch or not will really decide if it gets adopted

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

It’s kind of the opposite of this though, it’s not censorship. It’s not that you aren’t allowed to visit other sites, it’s that sites can choose to let you in or not.

The scary part is we don’t know what makes that decision, and from Google’s proposal is that it could just be anything they decide. So it’s not censorship, but it is saying “You aren’t playing by our rules (like by using an ad blocker, or you visited too many whistleblower forums, or we just plain decided we don’t like you) so you don’t get to use gmail/your bank/whoever decides to implement this”

“It’s Been Brutal”: Reality TV Producers Lament Conditions as Networks Remain Frugal During Strikes (www.hollywoodreporter.com)

Many thought the halt of scripted programming would lead to a reality boom, but even as fall schedules rely heavily on unscripted, workers still grapple with diminished job opportunities, long hours and a lack of union support: "We get starved out all the time."

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Sounds like they need a union.

So um... I kinda forgot my Bitwarden Password... 😬 Also can we talk about like stress memory problems and stuff? Recently, I'm having trouble remembering stuff.

Since my main lemmy’s password is locked behind Bitwarden, I had to make a new account to post. Originally I started using passwords manager because I keep forgetting passwords. But my paranoid ass is so worried that someone saw me typing my Bitwarden master password so I feel the urge to change it. So now I forgot the new...

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Don’t stress too much about it, we all forget things. From a very old story on Reddit I would recommend double checking your carbon monoxide detectors just to be safe. Guy was starting to lose huge chunks of time and it turned out his apartment had a leak in it, but beyond that it’s normal to forget passwords.

scrubbles, (edited )
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Don’t be worried, but they don’t really need to be installed like it’s some big operation. Swing by a hardware store, or even target or Walmart, I have the simple Kidde brand ones in my house, they have ones that show the PPM of CO for like, 10 to 20 dollars or something. You can put it on the wall if you like, just a couple of screws, or 3m strips or whatever. It’ll come with a 9volt battery.

If it’s not this time then at least you have it going forward. Small CO leaks do have short term memory issues, (I believe) sleep issues, irritability, and headaches as symptoms, but the worry is if a little is leaking then what happens if a lot starts leaking. Knowing is half the battle. Your dad is plain lazy, they’re cheap and easy to install, and every house should have them. (I believe it’s even code that you must have them).

For reference, in my house my PPM has never been above zero. You’re more than likely fine, but it is alarming your house doesn’t have any.

If you turn it on and ppm is up and it starts going off then I’d jump to action, which is usually calling the fire department if it’s critical levels or just the gas company if it’s lower, and seeing your doctor. Again not saying all of this to panic you, don’t freak out, just good to know these things for your own safety.

You probably just forgot your password lol, but just to be safe pick up a CO alarm :). Maybe today if you don’t have any

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Oh interesting, no mine are 9volt batteries, but I have seen the fancy ones that you wire into your house, I’m waiting for a clear weekend to redo all of my alarms and do those fire/CO combos that wire in and will send alerts to your phone if you’re out of town too

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Everything everyone else said, but to really point out, if this headache is out of the norm for you GO TO A DOCTOR. I don’t mean to freak you out but my mom instilled that in me from early on. Headaches and migraines happen, but it you get a new type, a weird spot, or they last longer, or anything weird or different get it checked out asap.

I’ve known 2 people personally who have had aneurysms, 1 was lucky, the other not. Get it checked out to be safe.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Good, I’m sorry for the migraines, I know how bad they can be, but good on you for getting it checked out. First friend was in high school, got a sudden headache and just took a lot of aspirin, he didn’t make it through the night. Second collapsed in the shower and his dog ran to get his wife as she was stepping out the door, made it to surgery within minutes of it being fatal. I always encourage people to get new and weird headaches checked out.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I do this too, if they don’t have a bagger (especially if they have a line) I’ll just start throwing stuff in a bag. What am I doing anyway besides just staring at them, might as well help them out.

However, I freaking loathe Kroger right now because they’re cutting down on staff like baggers. Corporations see people like us helping out bagging and they see it as “Great! Don’t need baggers anymore!” No you assholes, it’s because you’re trying to squeeze two jobs out of one person: cashier and bagger. Pay your employees double if you want them to do that.

What are some game genres / styles you like that aren't being made anymore, or are being mde but not very often?

For me it’s first person puzzle games. I can think of maybe a dozen off the top of my head that came out in the last decade. I especially enjoy when they’re open world. The ability to just quit a puzzle that’s stumped you and go try something else for a little bit is incredibly refreshing.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

You and me both friend, they know how much is at stake, yet I never hear good news coming out of the studio

Clickbaity title, wish we could just ban these videos from here, they’re just garnering views.

TLDW - Yes, society will survive. It has survived worse. It may not be the same but it’ll survive.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Not to mention in college you’re thrown in with thousands of people of all races, sexes, religions, and culture’s, and you are bound to be exposed to new ways of thinking. If you stay in your home town of 5000 people you never have to be exposed to other ways of thinking.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Exactly it, you go out into the world and realize everything that you’ve been told about people is just made up fearmongering. Turns out the vast vast majority of people want to wake up, go to work, go home, work out (but they’d rather not but they convince themselves to do it), go to the grocery store, and watch TV. Everyone truly just wants to have a boring happy life.

But you ask a conservative and they’ll claim they’re aiming to bring down america or some other crazy shit. Nope. They want to get a frozen pizza for dinner and watch whatever’s on TV, just like anyone else.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Eh I’d still suggest it. I won’t force people to but generally it’s good to get out and try new things. You don’t have to like them, but truly we get one life and you don’t want to make it to the end and realize you didn’t try anything. I like my rut too, but I still try to travel, experience new cultures, try that weird new food, talk to someone who’s different from me, go to that risque show that I normally wouldn’t, those are all life experiences that we can only do for so long and then it’s just over.

We go to work and follow our routine every day, a couple times a year try to push the boundaries a bit, you never know what you may like that’s out there

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yeah anyone who says that studios should just develop an engine or that it’s not that hard should look to cyberpunk. Most bugs there were engine related, and all of its performance woes were too.

I’m actually sad, it ended up being a fine engine after they fixed it up for a year, and it’d be nice to have some more alternatives to unreal

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Right but it’s a story, it doesn’t all have to be rootin tootin cowboy shooting, the storytelling is a major part of it. It helps the player really feel like theyre expercing Arthur. I get what you’re saying, but they definitely purposefully chose these devices from a storytelling perspective.
