I haven’t logged into my account over there since it all started. I don’t care if there’s an official protest or not, that was the last straw for me, it was time to leave.

And who would have guessed my emotional health has been better over here and I wouldn’t call it an addiction either. No thanks, op can go back to reddit if they like but I’m quite happy here

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Sadly it sounds like that was the norm. And people like op here say the protest is over and it doesn’t matter. Protest is over because reddit strong armed it over. I’ll use it if I Google something I need an answer to, but not for a daily scroller anymore

I used to think all of these too bud, trust me, but it has gotten better over the last 5 years. I did have a couple of hiccups but for the most part Ubuntu was pretty smooth. Steam makes all of your old games real easy too.

Are there any good Lemmy tools to easily but properly nuke your history yet? Like PowerDeleteSuite works for Reddit?

It just feels kind of gross having parts of me hanging out on the internet for too long. Like I haven’t been able to wash my hands/face for a while. I do it manually occasionally, but I have to block off a morning or evening for it now when I used to be able to do it with a couple mouse clicks then go off to take a shit or...

Yeah… the concept of “deleted” was never really a thing on the internet and I don’t think it is still. If you don’t want it to be on the internet forever… don’t post it. Lemmy is pseudoanonymous, just choose a different username and 99% likely no one will ever know it’s you.

(vent) god I hate customers

I’ve said it before on beehaw but I work pizza delivery. You’d think it would be an easy job, just drive around and drop off pizzas and enjoy music, but holy shit the amount of pure hatred I’ve gotten from customers over the dumbest little thing is just insane. I had a guy call me, a white-male, a racial slur because we...

I empathize bud (gender neutral bud). I really do, I have 5 years mcdonalds and 5 years retail under my belt and people. fucking. suck.

The general public are just the worst to deal with, especially if they view you as “beneath them” in the societal ladder. Boomers by far were the most hateful generation, an entire generation who has been handed everything and just throw childlike tantrums if they don’t get what they want.

Nothing humbles you like being screamed at by some 60 year old woman because you put “too few” pickles on a $1.50 burger. Or too many. Or who really cares, no one should care so much about how many pickles are on their burger enough to literally scream at an employee. But these people are so unaware, they have no idea that they look like the idiots in that situation. The managers don’t want a fight so they’ll just give them what they want so they leave.

As for what to do with money. SAVE. Save what you can. If you have a 401k put that money into it, 10% is a good measure if you can. Pay off all of your debt if you have any. Finally, invest. If everything else is done then invest. The economy is in a downturn and the way I like to think is that “stocks are on sale”. Use that money now to fund yourself in the future, you’ll thank yourself later.

A good order of operations is

  1. 401k/retirement, 5-10%
  • If your work doesn’t offer it you can still open some at your bank, look into IRAs
  1. Pay off debts
  • (like a lot, don’t just pay minimums, do principal only payments and get that stuff off your back. Then you’ll really have a lot of extra money)
  1. Save 6 months expenses for rainy day fund
  • High interest savings accounts like Ally can give you some interest on this too
  1. Save for down payment on a home if you’re interested in home ownership
  • Some people aren’t, but imagine all that money in rent going towards your own equity, not someone else’s. That’s a game changer for sure.
  1. Ad-hoc investing
  • This comes after everything, but can be stocks, funds, or a managed account of some sort.

Also we absolutely should get a talesfromretail going somewhere. I know we have !talesfromretail but that’s just a clone from Reddit and it’s pretty much read-only. (and the reddit stories you can really tell are just karma farming)

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yeah I know :( Too many bad managers who just don’t want to deal with it. The best manager I had worked retail with me and she would always say “My employee here did everything right, they were holding up the rules, and did not deserve you yelling at them for doing what they were taught to do. I am going to make a 1-time exception for you this time, but that will be it, I know you now and this will not happen again.” Which I loved. You can appease the customer to get them to go away, but at the same time you can stand up for your employee. Sometimes exceptions need to be made, but the big part was having the manager actually defend me, standing up saying I didn’t do anything wrong. Too many just swoop in and Karens act all snooty like they won somehow.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

If you have loans start paying them now, trust me, I exited college with way way way too much in loans. Anything, literally anything can save you soooooo much money down the line. Extra hundred or two every once in a while can save so much more in interest later, and get you started a bit easier too. After that, just get a savings account up and running. You’ll rest easier knowing you have a few months of rent and groceries in your savings account in case you are ever out of a job.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Or you can put more on it a month like any loan and pay it faster. Or do a 15 year loan if you feel like you can afford it like you said. Or an ARM if you really hate interest and want to pay off fast.

Even if only 15% goes to principal that’s more equity you’re building than renting.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Definitely not just “written by” but heavily used I’m sure. It’s widly known that Rockstar’s GTA Trilogy they relied on AI just to upscale everything for them and then just shoved it out.

Maybe someday we’ll get to the point where AI is good enough to produce whole works without human need, but we’re a ways off from that right now. Right now it’s a great tool to help augment jobs, but should be fine tuned and combined by humans. Buuut studio execs breeze past those details and just start the layoffs.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Like gold value has any meaning lol, humans are still just “ooo shiney”

Ugh my parents both insist on travel insurance. What if you get sick?? Idk, I’ll cancel the stuff I can and take the loss on what I can’t, for all the travel I’ve done the amount of times that has happened does not even remotely come close to how much I would have paid each time for travel insurance.

No mom, I’m not going to insure our 2 night stay at the Hilton in (mid sized city). I’m sure it’s going to be fine.

Last time I did was for a very very expensive flight across an ocean, just because it was like, 15 dollars on a 2000 flight for a few people. Fine, but everything else we took the risk. (And we did not use it)

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

not surprised at all, I’ve found it’s just better to learn the cancellation policy of your items. Most hotels are full refund if they know >48 hours, and if less usually you’ll at least get points/credit back which for me I’ll absolutely use next time. Not worth the premium and the hassle to get cash back if I only find out less than 48 hours ahead of time

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

It’s definitely gotten weirder lately, I think they keep training it on data and they’re not looking into that data enough. That’s the thing about AI though, it has to come up with an answer. You gave it a prompt. It will come up that answer even if it’s not a good one

scrubbles,

Elitist in his ivory instance over here. (Kidding). But a little offense with me and my Taylor Swift community over here, other instances aren’t bad by any means, and the more federation the more communities.

Nah I like what beehaw is doing, and defederation should always be the last line of defense. However the middle ground is good moderation and enforcement of the rules. Mods are overworked on beehaw, maybe it’s time for others to stand up and offer to take on some of the mantle.

Facial recognition (and AI ) is a great tool to use as a double check.

“Hey I think we found her because her car is parked there, is that her?” AI says it’s 90% sure it’s her, sounds good let’s go.

Or entering through an airport gate after scanning your passport. Great double check.

It should never be the first line to find people out of a crowd. That’s how we slide into the dystopia

xenia_canary is coming along. I could play the entirety on xenia_canary on Windows… only a matter of time.

That’s why I’ve been pushing for a whole rebuild of it. RDR2 already has New Austin and West Elizabeth fully built out in it’s map. Most of the characters exist already in RDR2. Honestly, for the amount of time to “remaster” it they should just rebuild it as a DLC to RDR1, have the player immediately take off into it from the end of the game. Charge $60 bucks for it and everyone would buy it still.

YouTube will now show a blank homepage if you don’t have watch history on (www.theverge.com)

That would be really interesting to listen to, because that’s exactly how I feel. Avengers 1 to avengers 2 had some great comedy. I felt natural, like a bunch of friends, just goofing around while trying to save the world.

Now it feels so forced in, like it’s clearly some Hollywood executive saying make it be funny instead of it naturally feeling like friends hanging out

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I think that’s absolutely fair, it will never happen, but I think it should. If you want a game that has online aspects of it and no longer want to host it that’s fine, but then the game should be mandated to go open source and you officially relinquish the copyright. I think that’s a very fair tradeoff, you don’t want to pay for servers anymore which means you don’t think there’s any profit left in it, so prove it by making it FOSS.

Talk about fragile masculinity. Girls have a movie that they like and is empowering and fragile idiots like this melt down. You know what manly men do? They let people enjoy things. Hell, they dress up in pink and go with their friends and enjoy it, and don’t get triggered so easily.

and the benefits keep dwindling like every subscription service.

Everyone at the beginning told me I was stupid for not blindly going for it, that it’s worth it! You get all these games for so little!

But I’ve been on this ride before with Netflix and all the other ones. Sure, the beginning is grand, they have everything you want at an impossibly low rate. They have sweet trials, good content, good prices, and it goes on for so long. Then all of a sudden you see reports of the libraries shrinking, costs are creeping up, those trials shrink, limitations are placed on how you use it. That favorite show/game you played is no longer allowed because of licensing issues, or it wasn’t popular enough. To keep watching the show you love you have to pay more a month.

Personally, I hope everyone who is doing it has fun, but I’m burned out on subscriptions. I like the term subscription fatigue. I’ll gladly pay to own my games.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Can you still do external hard drives? It’s a bit slower but for less used or older games I move them to my external

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I mean yeah if you’re playing the witcher, but if they are games like Jackbox style then it makes complete sense.

Granted Netflix has burned me too many times so I won’t be resubscribing for this.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

NEVER DO. Everyone will try to convince you to waive it, DO NOT. Even my realtor told me I should waive it on my current house and I told her there’s no way I’m buying a house without one an inspection. She was like “Well, I guess we could have one done, but it’d have to be early tomorrow at like 7am…” and I was like “Great, I’ll be there!”

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

yup, I learned a lot of the time they’re just lazy and want the easy sale. Make them work for it. It’s their job to sell the house, tell them what you need, in this case an inspection.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I forsee in the future federation boards, like servers that work together to vote on good/bad actors/instances and from those other instances could subscribe to their moderation. Still open moderation, you can still set up an instance that doesn’t adhere to group A or group B’s mod lists, but for the vast majority of people you could have a good experience.

For example, dunno how many saw but had to remove an anti-LGTBQ post in a LGTBQ community today. I’m sure I’m not the only mod who removed that from their instance today, it’d be great if there was a way other instance admins could share that and “team up” with moderation.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

less like countries, but I would view that more like the federation UN, with each instance getting a vote and a majority passes. You’re still in charge of your country, but you could say “I like how this group moderates, I’m going to auto apply moderation from them on here”, maybe you could choose which communities are automoderated too. If I ever started disagreeing with that group I could unsubscribe and subscribe to a different group’s.

For example, the post I mentioned was not in a community that I host, but for my users I had to remove it too. Would just be nice to say “whoever gets there first can remove it”

Minimum Wage workers not using common sense are the worst.

So I’ve been noticing most of the cashiers at big supermarket keep asking customers to use self checkout but little do they know that these numbers are being recorded and once executive of that big supermarket see customers have learnt to use self checkout then they will get rid of cashiers and replace with the self checkout....

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I thought this way but have been told numerous times by retail workers that they like the machines, that they were overworked before they came in and now the workload is manageable.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Definitely don’t disagree there.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

There are a few programming based instances, I’m sure any of them would be great to host the community

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yup, I can’t imagine what it’s like now being an actor. At least before you could act with someone else, play off each other. Now “Just act at this stick and do a good job”

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yes, airlines literally have failed to keep customers comfortable, that’s the entire point. Zero people are comfortable on that flight, and everyone knows that when someone reclines back into them it becomes even less comfortable. You aren’t making your experience better, you’re making someone else’s worse. The airline failed by making seats uncomfortable, and you’re making a bad situation worse for the person behind you.

Just because you can do things does not mean that you aren’t an asshole for doing those things. You’re allowed to block aisles in a grocery store, to go slower than the speed limit, to buy the last two packages of cookies when you know the person next to you also wants one, you’re allowed to do lot’s of things in life. It doesn’t mean you’re not an asshole for doing it. (In fact the entitled attitude you have without a care for anyone else kinda really drives home that you are)

If no one is behind you then recline away.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

exactly, it shouldn’t have to require asking for you to be courteous. You should just be courteous, unprompted. If you want to have a conversation that’s great, just kindly move off to the side

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Seems like you know what you are then and how your actions are seen by so there’s no point in continuing here.
