root,

I would offer a suggestion “it’s not that I have nothing to hide; it’s that i have nothing i want you or anyone else to see”.

Both may sound similar but in reality quite diffierent.

If this post gets 666 upvotes hell will definitely break loose lol

root,

Might be easier to start with something “simpler” like the ECU or infotainment unit.

root,

I use GPS Logger as well. Everything is saved locally in a kml file. The trick is to find an optimal settings which gives you enough data points but doesn’t kill your batteey in the process.

An alternative air cooler you can consider is the Deep Cool AK620. It’s cheaper than the Noctua NH-D15 and probably a couple of degrees off in cooling efficienct. I have it with my Ryzen 5600 and am very happy with the performnce.

Note that whichever cooler you decide to get, their websites should also have a link for case and ram compatibility. You don’t want to end up in a situation where the ram is too tall because of the rgb lights or the case can’t be covered up.

Leon, the URL cleaner. Use it to remove tracking links either before opening them or before sharing them.

Origin “We create worlds”. They definitely did with the Wing Commander series. Played a lot of WC 3, 4 as well as Privateer.

I don’t think anyone mentioned Lionhead Studios. Black and White was fun. Sadly it’s in copyright limbo if I’m not mistaken.

Also played a lot of Civilization 1 from Microprose back in the day.

root,

Never tried any of the Ultima series. :p

“I don’t have anything to hide”

I prefer to suggest a different mindset - “It’s not that I have nothing to hide. It’s that I have nothing I want anybody to see”

root,

Definitely. Now I just occasionally mention that I have and use more privacy friendly alternatives as a sort of “fyi” for them to know. It’s better for the other parties to want to switch out of their own desires than to be forced. If it is forced upon them and things don’t go smoothly, you’ll end up getting resentment or worse, blamed. Better to use subtle encouragement and if they decide to switch, offer lots of useful advice and assistance.

root,

Agreed 100%.

Before I got my noise cancelling headphones, I was very aware of the volume that I have set when trying to watch a movie in a plane. After I got the noise cancelling headphones, I no longer have to set it that loud anymore.

That said, some airlines need to relook their volumes of their PA system. Some of them are shockingly louder than necessary. Lol

Drivers for the Tobii eye tracker do not officially exist.

Noticed a strange occurrence where my monitor buttons will not react to presses when certain conditions are met

I have an Acer XV340CKP monitor connected via Display Port to my GPU. I also have a old LG W2253TQ that I use as a secondary display. It only has a DVI and VGA port. I have a DVI-DVI cable together with a DVI-Display Port converter to connect to my GPU, which is an Asus RX6900XT. I am running Nobara 38....

root,

Very interesting. The Asus monitor is probably only 2 years old. It does work fine standalone with a spare laptop of mine that is running Windows 10 though.

root,

The monitor with this “unresponsive button” issue is the Acer monitor, which is about 2 years old.

root,

So I decided to bite the bullet and did a fresh install of Fedora 39 and that appeared to have made the issue go away. In the process of installing updates and configuring it the way I like, the monitor control buttons on both monitors response. So, it seems like the cause of the issue could have been a glitch during an update. Who knows? At least I know that it’s not a hardware issue (cross finders). :)

root,

I did not try replicating this behavior with a Windows install on my desktop. I did however perform a fresh install of Fedora 39 and that appeared to have fixed the issue, which is good news.

root,

Bed bugs.

Positive outcome would be no more having to burn contaminted possessions (or wash them in very hot water many times).

root,

Like how after every Windows update all my settings get reset 🤣

Bought a cheap AU$40 pair of generic hiking poles. Use it for the entire Camino de Santiago. Friend borrowed for her Camino walk as well. I later used it for the first half of the Coast to Coasthike in UK. Earlier this year i used it for my Kumano Kodo hike. Still going strong.

root,

Not what you’re looking for but the Asus Zenfone 10 still has a headphone jack. I don’t think you’ll find a privacy oriented custom ROM for it though.

root,

That sounds like me. LOL

Wearing jeans back to front.

Cross coloured jeans.

The fediverse is like an apartment block and an instance is one of the apartments. When you create an account in the instance, you “chose” to move into that apartment.

A community in that instance is like a room in the apartment. There can be any number of rooms in the apartment, just like there can be any number of communities in the apartment.

Even though your account is in this instance, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck there. You can “visit” your neighbours in the other apartments (instantances) and interact with the people there.

The vanishing of the small high-end smartphone (www.smh.com.au)

Manufacturers don’t make displays under 6 inches available for purchase, with special cases (such as the iPhone Mini) being made under exclusive contracts. The best lead they have so far is to try to use displays designed for the front part of a foldable phone, but they’re yet to strike an agreement....

My Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact had very excellent battery life for it’s small battery. Sony definitely did an amazing job optimising it.

root,

I just want Sony to make another XZ1 Compact but with updated internals. Keep the screen size, camera shutter button, 3.5mm plug and make it thicker to squeeze in either wireless charging or a slightly bigger battery.

root,

The touchscreen of my Z3C no longer works. It was replaced under warranty and that too has totally failed :(

root,

Ooh. Did you replace the screen yourself or did you bring it to a repair shop?

root,

I want an updated Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact with all the modern internal bits. Modern processor, sufficient RAM and good enough camera. Doesn’t have to be the best, just good enough to keep upwith the times.

More importantly I want the height and width to remain the same; thickness can be increased if required.

Also keep the 3.5mm jack, camera shutter button, notification LED and the sim + micro-sd tray. Dual sim would be a bonus.

root,

VoiceMeeter Banana?

root,

It would be nice if the Yotaphone were more successful. The e-paper screen on the rear was innovative and certainly has it’s uses. More options is definitely good for consumers.

root,

Zenfone 8 here. I like it very much but… having come from the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compct previously, i prefer the size of the Sony. :p

root,

I use the Hermit app to “make” mini-apps of websites I frequently visit. They can also be sandboxed too.

root,

Sandboxed as in each site is isolated and does not share cookies and info with other sites.

I’m not sure about notifications since I don’t have any of them enabled.

What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?

I’ve been thinking about making this thread for a few days. Sometimes, I play a game and it has some very basic features that are just not in every other game and I think to myself: Why is this not standard?! and I wanted to know what were yours....

root,

I would be nice if the game detects that it’s been quite some time since I last played, and give a quick refresher of the keybinds as well as brief rundown of recent missions completed / story-so-far.

root,

Or … adult mode 😜

root,

My Asus Zenfone 8 has a 3.5mm audio jack. I believe the Zenfone 9 & 10 do as well. No removable battery or memory card slot but should be dual sim. My Zenfone 8 even has FM radio LOL.

root,

I think it was from one of the many communities here that I found out about juicysms.com

Haven’t had the need to use their services yet but they look legit.

root,

There’s also Minuum if you’re interested in trying it out.

play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whirlsc…

root,

Using Connect. Pretty happy with it so far. Feels smooth and snappy. Best of all, it doesn’t collect any personal data.

root,

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I doubt I’ll ever need to downgrade it to Oreo so it’ll be nice to try out a cuatom rom. I have heard quite a bit of /e/ os and it might be interesting to try it for myself.

The XZ1C has a lot of features I value. The small size, a 3.5mm plug and a camera shutter button. I’ve since upgraded to the Asus Zenfone8, but I still find it to be too big unfortunately. :(
