The republicans are not really governing: they are pandering. There’s no way such a measure could become law with the Democratic majority in the Senate. Even if such a measure became law, the Supreme Court would have to completely redefine due process for this to remain law, however, the Supreme Court did decide in favor of internment camps for Japanese American citizens, so I supposed this can not be ruled out.
Back in the last millennium, before the days of the internet, we had to learn to program from these things called books. There was no Stack Overflow or ChatGPT to ask questions. If you were lucky, there was “man” pages. I’ll see myself out to the nursing home now.
The police need crimes and criminals to justify their existence. If the criminals are selected by a computer program, that is sufficient for their purposes.

I think Max Tegmark is like other public intellectuals, for example, Michio Kaku, that have to say something controversial periodically to stay in he news and maintain their reputation.
He should have let himself be fired. Then he could have brought a lawsuit against the school district over the matter. The school district would have had to demonstrate their reason to fire him on the record. If the researcher received damages for wrongful termination, the taxpayers would know it’s their money that is being frivolously spent to support someone’s homophobic agenda.
Probably the best comparisons can be made to the Afghan War. However, Russia today is much weaker than the Soviet Union of the 1980s and the Ukrainian army is a more formidable adversary than the Mujaheddin. The potential for the war to be protracted, however, is great, as Putin likely sees defeat here as an existential threat to his power.
For the past few days I’ve been working on a 3-D printable footpedal potentiometer to be used in a guitar pedal. It is a parametric model in FreeCAD. It has a top and bottom that hinge together, with a potentiometer that is coaxial with the hinge so that when the pedal is pressed, the potentiometer is rotated....

Unfortunately, people who grow up in racist groups also tend to be racist. Slavery used to be considered normal and justified for various reasons. For many, killing someone who has a religion or belief different than you is ok. I am not advocating for moral relativism, just pointing out that a computer learns what is or is not moral in the same way that humans do, from other humans.

I enjoyed it and I give J. Michael Straczyinski a lot of credit for being able to conceive and tell a good story even with some difficult production and casting problems. While the plot can be simplistic there are not a lot of loose threads and there are many interesting characters. I think for the time (the 1990s) it was incredibly ambitious before streaming made more dedicated audience participation possible.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, a time to reap that which is planted;
How can you expect something like a social media website, so recently conceived, to persist in its present form so long? Everything changes so fast. Remember when televisions were these big boxes and there were only three channels?
Since people mostly vote along party lines nowadays, regardless of whomever each party nominates, the race is really who is nominated by each party. The problem now for a party is increasing turnout, not changing the minds of voters. And turnout in primary elections, which determines the nomination, is dominated by the extreme elements of a party. So you get candidates that appeal to the most extreme elements that vote in the primaries.
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
