btrfs has this built in with additional redundancy, so that is by far the better option to combine multiple drives into one large pool.

I would be more interested in why the UK based Matrix/Element is so conspicuously quiet lately about the UK Online Safety Bill. They used to be more outspoken about it.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yes, as I said, they used to be more outspoken. But suspicious silence despite the bill actually having passed now.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

They had months to prepare for this, surely some sort of press announcement would not be too much to ask?

It’s not “tinfoil hat” to expect some sort of response, and the lack of it is strange given they had all these big announcements this week. For example there was previously some talk about moving their headquarters to Luxemburg as a response to this (and to avoid the worst impacts of this bill).

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

This “let’s just not enforce it” part combined with the silence by the main intermediatories like Element is exactly what makes it seem like there has been some backroom deal no one wants to openly talk about.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

If I remember correctly on of the founders speculated about that in a Hackernews thread.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

You could try one of these: support.planetcom.co.uk/…/Linux_for_Cosmo

But is seems like Ubuntu Touch support was dropped and their own Linux AFAIK never worked very well.

!fiction has a few good book recommendations already.

Otherwise: Becky Chambers seems to be popular as an author lately.

Instant Messengers Analysis and Comparison (privacy.awiki.org)

The table is quite big (190+ lines of hand-written HTML) and it doesn’t fit on mobile phone screens unless you zoom out. It should be fine on desktop. It also specifies the criteria followed and has analysis of some of the IMs in the table (not close to all of them, I hope to add more analysis in the future)....

The latest specifications for OMEMO (XMPP) do some meta-data protection similar to Signal, but admittably few clients (Moxxy & Kaidan) support it so far and roll-out has been very slow.

I would suggest to change it to “bad” and write “work in progress” or so.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

SimpleX being a hybrid p2p model means that it leaks more metadata to 3rd parties than XMPP for example.

They explicitly recommend using Tor with Simplex for that reason.

I would suggest you change the “meta data” field for it to “probably ok”, but the design of the system makes it a risk factor, so without Tor it is probably more of a “barely ok”.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

IP addresses mainly, which is the worst kind of meta-data as it can be linked to your real location and name relatively easily.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

The vital difference is that with XMPP you consciously choose a server host (or self-host) that is acting like a proxy for you and thus protects your privacy, even if you don’t use Tor.

With SimpleX there is basically a random list of relays that you know next to nothing about, and which could in fact be mostly honey-pots, and you are connecting directly to them, which makes Tor almost mandatory.

For me it boils down to the fact that there is no such thing as trust-less communication, so you should choose carefully whom to trust and minimize the number of people you need to trust. XMPP is IMHO the clear winner on that, because it’s basically only your home-server you need to trust.

[Question] Am I the only dummy who likes Seafile?

Its stupid fast, reliable, and rarely has any conflicts. If it does it seems to work them out without intervention. I’ve tried Nextcloud including the AIO image and its just so clunky and slow. I was getting sync errors just on the simple Notes apps. Repeatedly. I mean I get why people like it, it can do way more than Seafile....

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Their non-standard way of storing files, which makes them basically inaccessible without Seafile, is a disaster waiting to happen. With Nextcloud at least I can do normal filesystem level backups and access the files like any others if I really need to.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah, sadly a lot of server hardware is designed for high air-flow rack-mounted cases and doesn’t deal so well with normal ventilation somewhat optimized to reduce noise. Especially PCIe ethernet cards seem to get really hot, but SATA extension cards are also problematic. Adding some better passive cooling also often helps.

Really a missed opportunity to not run and promote a Minetest server (with Mineclone2 or similar).

Lemmy Development Update 2023-09-22

Some years ago we used to post weekly development updates to let the community know what we are working on. For some reason we stopped posting these updates, but now we want to continue giving you information every two weeks about the recent development progress. This should allow average users to keep up with development,...

Both is kind of useful, but making the distinction UI wise is not an easy task.

poVoq,

Bluesky is to Mastodon & ActivityPub, what Matrix is to XMPP/IRC… a completely over-engineered system, ignoring all well established international standards and run by a for-profit entity with venture capital funding.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I hate to inform you that I know the insides of both pretty well and run both myself on my server and have evaluated the differences extensively 🤷‍♂️

Oh and:

I think it is best to disable comments through WP all together and only display the ones that get federated from Mastodon etc.

Even with some spam block addon for WP, spammers find a way and there is much more spam on WP than the Fediverse.

FediForum: Unconference September 20-21, 2023 (fediforum.org)

The Fediverse is growing rapidly. There are now tens of thousands of independently hosted servers, many new apps are appearing, and some big companies (like Meta) have announced they will implement ActivityPub and join the network. What decentralized future will we build, and how do we ensure it serves everybody?

Welcome on board :)

I documented a bit how to run Lemmy via Podman here: f-hub.org/Solarpunk/lemmy-podman

Should I switch to amd?

I have been considering selling my 3060 ti and buying a 6700 xt for a while now. The main reasons are (potentially) switching to wayland, +4 gb of vram, hardware acceleration in firefox (and steam too, it’s leaking vram for me with nvidia), potentially vr on linux with my quest 2 (a lot of things in alvr seem to be locked for...

Wisest Upgrade from Raspberry Pi (artemis.camp)

I am several months into the self-hosting journey and I feel I have outgrown my Pi 4 B 8GB. I'm only running around 3 dozen containerized services and it seems to struggle to keep up. But I'm not sure of the best bang for my buck. I'd like good, long-term performance, but I don't really have a grand lying around for a Lenovo...

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Second hand Intel 6/7 gen is probably the best bang for the buck right now. Relatively power efficient too if you turn off the turbo-boost in the bios.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yes, it depends a bit, but you can use a smaller ATX PSU if you don’t have to account for power spikes due to turbo boost, and these PSUs are somewhat more efficient when they don’t run at 10% utilization only most of the time. Also allows using smaller DC/DC Pico PSUs that would struggle providing peak power.

Metro might be running in DX12 mode. The translation layer to Vulkan from DX12 is not as good as the one from DX11 yet. So usually you get better compatibility and framerates by switching the game to DX11 or native Vulkan.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

It should be a in-game menu option or a popup when launching the game. You might have clicked “always use this option” previously, then you need to reset that in the game’s steam menu.

Something for making fermented foods… Kimchi, Tempeh etc.

For example: youtu.be/mj9qcqRjCwg

Maybe not right in the kitchen (needs to be in the dark I think), but some oyster mushrooms from this kind of source could be shown: grocycle.com/grow-mushrooms-in-a-bag/

Maybe some fermenter for making your own homebrew beer or wine? Or soy-sauce or so?

Could also be used for some bio-hacking, like genetically modified yeasts that produce some sort of food supplement?

Does "Selfhosted" mean you actually have a server at home?

I’m trying to better understand hosting a Lemmy Instance. Lurking discussions it seems like some people are hosting from the Cloud or VPS. My understanding is that it’s better to futureproof by running your own home server so that you have the data and the top most control of hardware, software etc. My understanding is that...

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

It’s easier and quicker to start with a VPS and most people do that. On the low end it is usually also cheaper (unless you already have or can get second hand hardware almost for free).

However, if you are starting to get higher storage and compute needs, currently especially also GPU compute, hosting from home can be very interesting as it is much cheaper in the longer term and the hardware side is interesting to learn as well.
