Wow, I started looong ago:

  • Star Trek for Unix en.m.wikipedia.org/…/Star_Trek_(1971_video_game)
  • Star Trek: the game, by Tobias Richter, for my Commodore Amiga
  • the game that is now sold as “25th anniversary”
  • star trek: klingon
  • star trek: borg
  • birth of the federation
    Edit: forgot DS9: Harbinger!
nightwatch_admin,

The IRL. pinball machine? Oh man that was my favourite!

nightwatch_admin,

It does! The game is from ‘71; PCs really took off in the early 90s, but they started in ‘81: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_PC_compatible

nightwatch_admin,

That’s not a great idea. I understand where OP is coming from, but this could make the admins of the user account servers very powerful , as they would be in control of who would get access to what.

nightwatch_admin,

No, because I can now create an account at - as a fictitious example - Lemmypoop, and see their content and everyone else’s, something that could be prevented when I only can create an account on poop-disliking Lemmy.clean. At the very best, it would end up in a huge amount of little bubble islands, where accounts and content are bound together.

nightwatch_admin,

Why am making such a gross example btw

nightwatch_admin,

IANAL either but do have a ToS. Like slapping, say, a GPLv3 on your code, a ToS defines what users are allowed to do with your service. Imagine if someone found a way to use your bot to steal users’ data, or harass people online, etc. - you’d be angry because they are not supposed to use your bot for that.

nightwatch_admin,

In PEMDAS M does not get priority over D so the equation has to be executed in order: 8/2=4, 4*4=16. You would be correct if all PEMDAS were a priority list., but it is not.

nightwatch_admin,

The slaves will be taxed, of course, FREEDOM B***

nightwatch_admin,

I think you wonder whether your PC can be connected directly to the internet. Yes, like every server, router, firewall, technically you can. You would need to set up your connection completely manually, as there is no one doing that for you.

However, connecting millions of people is an epic task in itself. You would need at least as many public IP addresses as consumers have devices, and find a way to drag ethernet cables over enormous distances… while these won’t exceed about iirc 120m until signal loss is killing the connection. Then you would need all those consumers to have intricate network knowledge too.

Hence why we’re modems that can use long distance connections (like DSL over phone lines), that can arrange internal network connectivity without you having any knowledge, and apply internal IP space instead of public. Also your ISP can apply efficient internal routing and even internal IP space to save on rare and expensive public space.

There is much more to this, but I wanted to keep it ELI5. HTH!

nightwatch_admin,

Yes. In fact, that is what a server does. It is much like your PC, just heavily optimised for providing services (like websites) to many users. There is no modem between the server and the first router, just straight ip with the router as the default gateway.

nightwatch_admin,

Oh man, Bester was fuckin awesome.B5 had so many great, really complex, multilayered characters but Bester… Bester was actually simply evil, much more so than the Shadows have ever been.

nightwatch_admin,

I have kids and this picture gives me a heart attack every time I so much as glance at it

nightwatch_admin,

And that’s why privacy is important - the assumptions and decisions an algorithm makes are not necessarily correct, often not even close.

Edit:before someone wants to be smart: yes, I know it’s a joke.

nightwatch_admin,

No, the protocol is sound enough, WhatsApp doesn’t have the key, doesn’t want the key (so they will probably not be responsible for what you are communicating with others), and doesn’t need the key - as others have put so eloquently, the metadata is rich enough for them.

nightwatch_admin,

IIRC Telegram is only e2e if you explicitly enable it, and not at all for group chats. My info is probably (and hopefully) outdated though.

nightwatch_admin,

Via the inserted hot hard-as-steel rod of course

nightwatch_admin,

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Smells of Leninists here. Basically bigmouths, but they did invent photoshop.

    nightwatch_admin,

I was hoping for Hoi, the Amiga game from 1992…

    Hoi Amiga 1992

    nightwatch_admin,

There’s one thing missing from your reply: the vpn provider knows who you are and what you are doing, so it’s not better than an isp - just a trust tradeoff.

    nightwatch_admin,

Exactly. And if you want to catch bad guys, you can build honeypot websites (or take over bad ones, like law enforcement did with several dark markets) and work on deanonimyzing visitors there.

    nightwatch_admin,

Going at least the speed limit

I think that driving instructor is up for early retirement.

    nightwatch_admin,

GMO is for single crop mass production combined with extreme herbicides/fungicides. Basically biofuels and cattle feed. Also monoculture is devastating for the environment, both animals and other plants. Not a solution, nice for big chem not for the rest.

    nightwatch_admin,

There would be so many memes never born

    nightwatch_admin,

Systemd haters? But seriously, this could well be because of business environments where applications require specific OS versions to keep being supported by the vendor. Or better: where the orchestration tool cannot be updated because of the old OSs while said OSs cannot be updated because it will break orchestration.

This is why people love containers: you can run insecure software on insecure OS (component)s while pretending to be in control on your shiny Kubernetes cluster.

    nightwatch_admin,

Maybe he needs to keep cool, give the guy some ice, ice baby

    nightwatch_admin,

Say no more say no more! Your wife, she’s into mushrooms? Eh eh? Is she? Say no moooore!

    (thanks)

    nightwatch_admin,

“Euthanising will continue after these messages from our sponsors!”

    nightwatch_admin,

While this is a good meme, it distracts from Leonard Nimoy’s own most fascinating musical career. I’ll leave it to you lurkers to discover that career all by yourselves.

    nightwatch_admin,

god I love lemmy so much

    nightwatch_admin,

I never expected that my neurons could feel like a seriously twisted broken leg, but you did it. Congratulations.

    nightwatch_admin,

Is this Creepy Guy who says Jesus gave him private jets?

    nightwatch_admin,

Competition on price sounds nice because it prevents excessive prices, but it’s also a root cause of poverty and environmental abuse. Cooperating is much better.

    nightwatch_admin,

Quite so, with the limited Klingon diet , permaconstipation is a thing.

    nightwatch_admin,

This is wrong. Janeway has caffeine for blood, she wouldn’t “react” to a decent cuppa.

    nightwatch_admin,

That’s preferable to the bland white room with lots of tubes that go into your natural bodily orifices or have orifices specifically created for them, isn’t it?

Weeeeeelllll a bit of imagination can take you a long way… let me get a toolbox.

Facebook locking account with no specific reason given other than suspicious activity (lemmy.world)

I had seen similar posts like this crop up on Reddit from time to time, but I would rather use Lemmy instead to talk about this. However, I did a search for Facebook on here and have looked through communities while trying to see where this would best fit, but I couldn’t figure out where it would go. So, I ended up deciding...

    nightwatch_admin,

My business account was locked during fucking signup. From a residential IP with no low reputation, at a normal time of the day… for community rule breaking or something. Appeal? Fuck you appeal.

    nightwatch_admin,

I dit and it worked out great

    nightwatch_admin,

Yeah, my first thought was “how many RadAway does this guy need??”
