I will stop using Linux / PC for 10 months. What do you think will happen in that period?

Long story short, this year is my exam preparation year and due to my nature I will take extreme measures to prevent distraction and focus on studying. I will decommision my PC, stop browsing Linux & tech related websites and leave this beautiful place called Lemmy. To make things clear, I am not influenced by anyone for doing...

mrvictory1,

I sent you my obligatory upvote.

mrvictory1,

I don’t recall saying anything about smartphone?

mrvictory1,

I can’t realistically cut off my phone entirely but reduce the number of apps installed. I currently have only Firefox, Spotify, Proton Mail and Whatsapp which could distract me. Rest is utility apps like maps, calculator, messages etc.

mrvictory1,

Yes I am cutting out my PC, not any specific OS

mrvictory1,

Use EndeavourOS and set up ZRAM. ZRAM should reduce RAM usage while not slowing down your PC.

mrvictory1,

I had to choose an older version of Proton

Which in turn caused the performance problems. Fast shader compilation extensions are available only on Proton 8 and newer.

mrvictory1,

People who don’t want to / can’t tinker, usually.

mrvictory1,

My recent interest in rooting is purely because I have some foss apps that require root for me to use the full capabilities that I want.

Example? I personally just deleted unnecessary apps with adb and went on. Google Play services are still running but that is really it. After rooting getting updates will be difficult so you will want a custom ROM. Decide if that is what you want to do.

I want to switch to Linux but there are a few major hurdles.

So I have a situation. I really want to switch to Linux as my main gaming/production OS but need the Adobe suite as I am a graphic designer. Adobe is the golden standard for this industry (and likely to always be) so while Gimp and Inkscape might work, they are not feasible for my career. I also know that there will be...

mrvictory1,

Can you get away with old versions of Adoba suite? Latest versions typically don’t work but you may be able to get old versions running without dual boot by using Wine.

mrvictory1,

Two hand drag and drop looks sick!

mrvictory1,

I love my “>1 year remaining” on Steam downloads.

mrvictory1,

Smooth touchpad scrolling on Firefox is a Wayland exclusive feature. I force Wayland for Firefox only for this feature.

mrvictory1,

I actually like Linux defaults as they are but don’t like Windows defaults, on Windows it feels too slow to me. I have 17.3 inch 1080p display.

mrvictory1,

If only. Systemd is mature to the point it is the de facto init system and used by almost all distros. Wayland and its compositors are still in development.

mrvictory1,

I think that is the true reason. For example D+ has around 160 mil subs but they are still losing money. What are they going to do next, beat Netflix in sub count? No, they already reached their limit already and started to lose subs. They should cut costs instead of chasing revenue.

mrvictory1,

I am just a regular user but on a smaller screen ie. 13 inch 1440x900 I just have a single maximized window visible even if I have multiple apps open like web browser because I can’t see anything if I have multiple windows.

mrvictory1,

Yes. I dual-boot and need everything to be accessible from Windows so I gave Windows 400 GiB while Linux only 75 GiB. Without compression I would be out of disk space. I think I hold about 95-100 GiB of data in 70 GiB. Snapshots are to revert broken updates, not to setup fresh installations. If you use a rolling release distro, they become invaluable. You can boot into snapshots if an update goes sideways.

mrvictory1,

I doubt you can get 12h on an x86_64 computer, regardless of OS. With tweaks Linux can match Windows battery life but if you really need 12h get that M2 MacBook.

mrvictory1,

Asahi doesn’t have CPU frequency management and will drain battery in 3h iirc

mrvictory1,

I read a post from Netflix tech blog explaining the selection of a thumbnail. A video has many thumbnails and Netflix picks one for you depending on the shows you watch and your country. From the new profile watch movies / series that are unrelated with romance and the thumbnails should hopefully change.

What's the best app for Youtube right now?

Years ago I used NewPipe but when I wanted a little more from my app I switched the ReVanced until it started giving me more and more issues. For the past 3 months or so I’ve been using a cracked Youtube Premium app, but now it’s dropping every video after about a minute. So what’s everyone using these days to avoid all of...

mrvictory1,

Firefox with Ublock Origin + YT Playback Fix extensions. I don’t regularly watch YT or follow people so this is sufficient for me.

mrvictory1,

Doesn’t have a lot of features and at times is a UX disaster due to inclusions of Plasma Mobile components.

  • There are 2 (3?) settings panels: System Settings (what we have on desktop) and another settings app from Plasma Mobile. Also at the bottom of the dashboard there is a “settings” section which configures individual settings like WiFi, Bluetooth, Wallpaper etc.
  • On the top there are WiFi, Bluetooth and KDE Connect indicators. Activating WiFi and KDE Connect will open a configuration window which doesn’t have all its elements visible in its default size. You have to resize the window with mouse.
  • Plasma has a “remote controllers” program which remaps game controller input to arrow keys, OK / back and Home. That program at times started using %100 of a core and required a kill & restart. Also you cannot map to Volume +/-. I used AntiMicroX to fully map my controller. (DualShock 3)
  • Mouse does not auto hide.
  • At least it can launch applications. Plasma BigScreen is basically skinned Plasma Desktop so with keybinds I could Alt-Tab between different applications, (IPTV Player, Firefox) return to dashboard and kill apps with keybinds. I even used Waydroid, it required some hacks but worked anyways.
  • I didn’t use Mycroft. It is supposed to make BigScreen better but my usecase didn’t need it.
mrvictory1,

Hold shift and spacebar on boot (idk which one) and pick a different kernel.

mrvictory1,

clicks on link

It looks like you are using an ad-blocker

mrvictory1,

I thing they meant “floating”.

mrvictory1,

Pulling down from top right corner to show the full quick actions menu. Now I need to swipe down twice to see all options, with this update only once. I will actually install the beta solely for this feature.

mrvictory1,
  1. You need S23 series phone AND need to be in one of the specific regions. More phones will be added later.
  2. Use Samsung Members app to opt in to beta
  3. Do a software update like how you normally would. developer.samsung.com/one-ui-beta

$1299

Shipping through backorders

Good for Librem I guess…

mrvictory1,

Mobile FF is already awesome with UBlock Origin and YT background playback extensions. I wish to install an auto redirect extension. (Twitter to Nitter) I know it is doable on beta w/ extensions etc. but I want to see them on normal Firefox.

mrvictory1,

For how long are they running Linux?

mrvictory1,

I thought the appeal of SE was the traditional (pre iPhone X) layout.

I just started using Linux... any great tips?

I just installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (Cinnamon) on an empty laptop a couple days ago and have been experimenting a lot. I’m coming from being a Windows user since I was just a little kid playing old DOS games on my grandpa’s Win-98 PC back in around 2000. My daily driver is currently running Windows 10 but I am pretty adamant...

mrvictory1,

Never use sudo for graphical apps. If you need admin permissions use pkexec instead. ie. pkexec gparted

mrvictory1,

Some GUI apps need admin permissions and will not work without them. Gparted is an example. pkexec (polkit exec) is the right way to start these apps, read this for more info askubuntu.com/…/why-should-users-never-use-normal…

mrvictory1, (edited )

I don’t think you can get OTA if you root a Samsung. EDIT: You can get OTA except that it isn’t actual OTA but manual, the process is a bit involved.

mrvictory1,

Do you mean a video with multiple songs split by chapters? Like this one? You can use yt-dlp with –split chapters -x options. -x extracts audio.

mrvictory1,

I did a debloat on my Samsung and applied a patch, I didn’t see anything come back. I can give better info if I decide to install the beta which isn’t available yet.

mrvictory1,

This is not mildly infuriating. This is intensely rage inducing.

mrvictory1,

It is so unfortunate to be ridiculed for being a Linux user in a country with a staggering %14 market share.

mrvictory1,

available on Samsung devices running OneUI 5.1.1, like the Galaxy Z Fold 5, but not those running OneUI 5.1 like the Galaxy S23

I have the setting on Galaxy A34 running latest stable firmware with OneUI 5.1, but it is called “notifications for unknown bluetooth trackers”, slightly different from the post.

mrvictory1,

I am interpreting “worth paying” as “immensely useful” because I don’t recall paying for an app, ever.

  • Aurora Store: Basically Play Store but you don’t need to sell your soul to Google. You can log in to Google account while staying signed out on Android or use “anonymous account” function.
  • KDE Connect: File transfer, phone notifications on PC, stops video/audio on PC when you answer a call and many other features. Right clicking a file on my Linux PC and then clicking “Send to Phone via KDE Connect” is so satisfying.
  • Samsung Notes: No non-sense PDF reader and annotator. It did not appear when I searched for Android PDF readers on the Internet and its name doesn’t imply that function making it sort-of a hidden gem. Maybe there are better apps I couldn’t find, though.
mrvictory1,

they will probably be too jacked up on X

This has not aged well

mrvictory1,

Disagree. I love F34 and F36 wallpapers. Rest are mediocre imo but not terrible.
