kent_eh,

That police were all “We have no idea who did this” is absolute bullshit.

If there is an active incident in progress, do you really think it’s a good idea for the police to show all their cards immediately?

They have to assume the shooter has access to the same news we do, and if the police can give him a false sense of security during the initial hunt, maybe he’ll get overconfident and be easier to find quicker?

kent_eh, (edited )

There’s always confusion with these things. Where? How many shooters? How many dead? It’ll take a while for completely accurate info to come out

And that’s one of my biggest frustrations with the people who immediately demand full information, and insist there must be some conspiracy going on when they don’t get it, or when the complete information eventually comes out that isn’t an exact match for the initial reports.

People need to chill the fuck out when these things are still developing.

Donald Trump fined $10,000 for second gag order violation in civil fraud case (www.reuters.com)

Justice Arthur Engoron on Oct. 3 barred Trump from disparaging court staff after Trump shared on social media a photo of the judge’s top clerk posing with U.S. Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, and falsely called her Schumer’s “girlfriend.”...

kent_eh,

Sure, but what is the penalty for not paying (as Trump has a long history of doing)?

kent_eh,

if Trump is in jail, so is his Secret Service detail

It’s not like they’ll be in the cell with him.

And it’ll be a lot easier for them to keep him protected if he’s locked up. (Clearly they’ll never put someone like this in general population where some random gangbanger can get at him.)

What is the best linux alternative to OneNote?

I’ve no problem with using LibreOffice for most of my document needs, but i haven’t found a good substitute for microsoft’s OneNote yet. I mainly use it to plan my RPG games and it helps a lot. What alternatives are there for organizing notes on linux, with similar features to those that OneNote provides?

kent_eh,

Thank you.

We are encouraged to use the Microsoft office suite if tools at work, and I still haven’t figured out how to use OneNote to improve my life.

kent_eh,

if Republicans did do that then votes could put Democrats back in power to restore and/or improve everything.

Except it takes a lot more time, effort and money to rebuild something than it does to destroy it.

As the Bigen administration is currently experiencing.

kent_eh,

Cutting Edge Engineering is more of a machinist, but he does a lot of repair work. And has a bit of a dry Aussie wit that he sneaks into his videos.

Vice Grip Garage, Junkyard Digs, DD speedshop and Polebarn Garage all work on old cars and all have a self-deprecating redneck engineering kind of humor.

It's Day 20 with no House speaker, and lower-level names seek Trump's support and race for the gavel (apnews.com)

Republicans gathered late in the evening to hear quick speeches from the congressmen seeking the job, though none has a clear shot at the gavel. Eight candidates are in the running for one speaker after one dropped out. Behind closed doors, they made their elevator pitches to colleagues ahead of internal party voting....

kent_eh,

And how far the candidates can distance themselves from Trump, not sucking up to the blood criminal.

kent_eh,

let the states pick up the slack

I’m sure DeSantis, Abbot and their ilk would love to have that extra power to fuck people over.

kent_eh,

And blame it on the democrats.

As is tradition.

kent_eh,

And in my company the password change policies are very different from one system to another. Some force a change monthly, some every 28 days, some every 90 days, and thwn there is rhat one legacy system that no longer has a functioning password change mechanism, so we can’t change passwords there if we wanted to.

And the different systems all want different password formats, have different re-use rules.

And, with all those uncoordinated passwords, they don’t allow password managers to be used on corporate machines, despite the training materials that the company makes us re-do every year recommending password managers…

kent_eh,

I keep a jar of it in my desk at the office.

Handy for those overnight callouts when noting else is available.

kent_eh,

Thwy run those longer trains on days when ther isn’t a scheduled VIA train too.

I don’t think it’s specifically done to screw VIA, even if that is one of the results.

kent_eh,

There is also a similar CBC show (and podcast) on the same topic by a long-time advertising industry insider.

Under the influence by Terry O’Reilly.

kent_eh,

Especially when there are already several free ones out there.

kent_eh,

Senator MacDonald outlined analyses questioning the affordability and sustainability of a GBI program. He cited research suggesting it could cost hundreds of billions annually, require tax increases, and reduce work incentives.

Y’know what really increases “work incentives”? Good wages and decent working conditions.

Shitty bosses offering shitty pay at shitty workplaces is the real reason business owners are crying that “nobody wants to work any more”.

kent_eh,

For me 2 of the most essential are “color blind assistant” and “color blind pal”.

kent_eh,

1: who?

2: why is it an important thing to ask?

Ford's Greenbelt flip-flop could spell legal trouble for taxpayers, lawyers say (www.cbc.ca)

Remember how canceling the gas plant was such a big deal? I bet the apologists will be out in force explaining how the fact that we are on the hook for this abjectly corrupt effort to transfer billions of dollars of unearned benefit to Ford’s wealthy developer friends/donors is, “ToTaLlY dIfFeReNt.”...

kent_eh,

Rob Ford was utterly delusional about his accomplishments or was a Trumpian scale pathological lair.

Who would have thought…

kent_eh,

We slso shouldn’t be paying for well site cleanup, oil spills and all the other environmental damage that the oil industry has been causing for generations, but here we are.

Louisiana public school principal apologizes after punishing student for dancing at a party (apnews.com)

The 17-year-old student government president and scholarship candidate was videotaped dancing at an off-campus party following Walker High School’s Sept. 30 Homecoming festivities. A hired DJ took the video and posted it on social media. Three days later, Jason St. Pierre, principal of the public high school near the state...

kent_eh,

Yeah there it is.

Sorry I got caught…

kent_eh,

Hopefully his leave will become a resignation firing.

kent_eh,

Expressing and demonstrating that his views have changed for the better.

kent_eh,

I expect this clip to appear in Liberal and NDP ads during the next election campaign.

kent_eh,

Mac&cheese

It’s Kraft Dinner or nothing.

kent_eh,

It specifically says in the article that some of them are exactly that.

kent_eh,

users should be able to make that decision themselves.

Agreed

I do not understand why you can’t turn off telemetry,

It should be opt-in, not opt-out.

kent_eh,

It’s not about what the programmers want, it’s about the sales and marketing departments. They are the ones who use and abuse that data

kent_eh, (edited )

When both sides of a conflict make the claim that the same piece of dirt is sacred to their religion, it’s unlikely for cooler heads to get a word in edgeways.

kent_eh, (edited )

Religion is seldom the initial cause of wars, but it is almost always used as a tool to motivate and drag the population along with the war effort.

kent_eh,

Apparently the “free market” can solve its own problems.

Make living in one place too expensive and people will leave, meaning those landlords (and others who are overcharging and excessivley profiteering) will suffer or be forced to lower prices.

.

Or maybe, an unregulated free market isn’t the most effective way to run a society…

kent_eh,

Dissapointed that I don’t see Olestra on that list.

kent_eh,

When people change cities or provinces/states thwy typically change numbers.

Is the purpose of life to be happy?

When I’m unhappy, I feel like I’m doing life wrong. I’d rather be happy. But is happiness the point of life, or is there more to it? If I pursue happiness, mine first then for those around me, is that selfish? But if there’s a bigger purpose, then what about people with Alzheimer’s or dementia who can’t recall recent...

kent_eh,

The purpose of each person’s life is for them to define.

It’s not something that is assigned to you, and it doesn’t have to be the same as anyone else’s purpose.

And it can change over time as your experiences and circumstances mold the person you are.

kent_eh,

This is clearly a propaganda piece. Or, if we’re being kind, biased reporting

It’s the western standard. All they do is propaganda and biased reporting.

That’s their entire reason for existing.

kent_eh,

Strange, I didn’t get an antifa cheque…

kent_eh,

They’ve been doing this since day 1.

Rightwingnut propaganda is the entire reason for the western standard to exist.

kent_eh,

but he should also be calling for a negotiated end to this brutal war

Bernie is smart enough to know that you can’t reliably negotiate with someone as untrustworthy as Putin.

Putin has lied to the world more than enough times that nobody should trust any potential negotiation he is involved in.

kent_eh,

Putin can end this war any time. Just go back to the original borders.

Exactly.

If these anti-war protesters want to yell at the people who can stop the war, they need to protest at the Russian embassy.

kent_eh, (edited )

Except this is assuming that the US is omnipotent. The US cannot use overwhelming force to defeat Russia in the conflict.

Good thing pretty much every western country is supporting Ukraine’s defensive war effort.

Nobody expects the US to be the sole support for Ukraine.

kent_eh,

Either Cheney let it happen because he wanted war, or he just couldn’t handle all the info, but was too much of a control freak to get help.

There is much to criticize about the Bush presidency, but I’m willing to accept that incompetence is a much more likely explanation than malice in this instance.

kent_eh, (edited )

Sure it’s less bad, but it’s still pretty dismal.

Then again it’s also mind boggling that you guys can’t get medical care for serious issues without the risk of bankruptcy, or that your employers hold the keys to whether or not you can afford to get medical care.

kent_eh,

being “city folk” vs. being “rural” doesn’t really qualify as an excuse for different levels of education

Availability of schools and ability (or willingness) to pay for good teachers very much does correlate to levels of education available in different places.

kent_eh,

a plug for their patron, kofi, buy me a coffee

I’ve got links to several of them on my youtube channel. Patreon is the only one my viewers have ever chosen to use.

Regardless of the issues people identify with Patreon, it is the one that pays the bills consistently.

kent_eh,

Physical media for the win

kent_eh,

I never suggested that it did.

[USA] Massive emergency alert test scheduled to hit your phone on Wednesday. Here's what to know. (www.usatoday.com)

“Get ready to not freak out. On Wednesday, October 4 at 2:20 p.m. ET, every TV, radio and cellphone in the United States should blare out the distinctive, jarring electronic warning tone of an emergency alert.”

kent_eh,

Everyone in Canada who has cable TV knows what the American EAS broadcast warning sounds like.
