jaspersgroove,

Fuck photobucket and the absolute wasteland they have left in countless forum posts in every corner of the internet. Sooooo much valuable information just fucking gone because they got greedy and refused to change with the times.

jaspersgroove,

They could have found a way if they had given a shit. Give the forums the option to take over hosting, or transfer them to an internet archive. Hell I bet there are enough data hoarders that would have been delighted to help ensure that data remained accessible without costing photobucket a dime.

jaspersgroove,

Now I just need to find a way to block all the bot spam without blocking all the bot porn.

I mean, IMO it’s good enough to get your moneys worth out of it, its a hell of a lot of fun actually. It’s just that the main storyline is relatively short and the gameplay loop after completing the main story is not engaging enough to make it one of those games that you end up sinking 500+ hours into. To me that puts it in the same tier as Subnautica.

jaspersgroove,

The people calling the EU the fourth reich are the same people that will unironically say that Hitler wasn’t so bad, and actually did some good things for Germany. They’re right up there with the people that call Biden “Genocide Joe” despite the fact that he has never committed genocide against anybody, and then talk about how great Stalin and Mao were.

jaspersgroove,

Every president the US has had since 1948 has financed and supported Israel, with the full support of congress, regardless of what rhetoric those congressmen are spewing in the run-up to an election year. Congress sets the budget, and they sign off on giving Israel money every single year so don’t act like this is just Biden throwing money at them.

Every president after Biden will continue to do so as well. Israel is shitty but every other country in the region is exponentially shittier. That being said, I’m not happy with the way this is being handled either, but don’t pretend like Biden is handling things any differently than every president for the last 80 years - with the possible exception of Jimmy Carter - would have done.

jaspersgroove, (edited )

Ok, you got me, only 90% of the countries in the region are exponentially worse, two of them are just worse on a strictly linear scale.

Yes I think countries that routinely decapitate gay people, beat women to death with rocks for not wearing the right hat, condone or at the very least ignore the rape of women and children, and cut peoples hands off for shoplifting, whose atrocities only can’t be called genocide because it’s the same ethnic group killing each other, are worse than Israel, didn’t realize that was such a hot take. I’m not saying Israel is good, I’m just saying the US, along with most of Europe, has chosen to back the one country in the region that at least pretends to have western values.

jaspersgroove,

Chrono Trigger is at least double the play time If you go after all the endings and get all the secrets and do all the side quests, to say nothing of the opportunity for grinding to level your characters that you just don’t get with SMRPG since you max out at level 32 iirc. You can do everything there is to do in SMRPG in a day. A long-ish day, but a day nonetheless.

jaspersgroove,

The newest versions of chrono trigger also have additional maps, dialog, items, and side quests that weren’t in the original game. It doesn’t add a ton of play time, but it was nice to have some new things to do in one of my favorite games of all time that I’ve probably played through 15 or 20 times already.

jaspersgroove,

I’ve never actually made it to max level, I just grind until I can solo Lavos with Crono, which I can usually consistently achieve by around level 70. It’s not an arbitrary grind, I have a specific goal in mind.

jaspersgroove, (edited )

Right but there is in-game content that gives you an incentive to do so. If you want to get all the endings, you have to solo Lavos with Crono. And in my opinion it’s the best ending of the game, because you get to talk to sprites of the devs and it’s a really cool kinda 4th-wall breaking way to tie everything up at the end. Is it repetive? Sure, but so are 95% of the games that are coming out today.

Is exposure to other viewpoints good when those viewpoints are half-baked straw man hot-takes that the users are just parroting because they heard their favorite YouTuber say it?

I don’t need to be exposed to yet another dipshit who insists the holodomor never happened. That’s not me avoiding other viewpoints, that’s me avoiding fucking morons.

jaspersgroove,

If you aren’t an idiot or a teen you should be immune for the most part.

Yes but the problem is between idiots and teens you’ve covered about 70% of the population.

jaspersgroove,

Anything created by Michael Schur really, along with Parks and Rec he also did Brooklyn Nine Nine and The Good Place, both of which are funny and full of heartwarming moments compared to a lot of other shows these days.

He did The Office too but I think he hadn’t quite hit his stride when he did that show, it has its moments but to me The Office leaned way too heavily on secondhand cringe humor.

jaspersgroove,

That’s what you get for reading left to right top to bottom like it’s a paragraph instead of just looking around randomly

jaspersgroove,

It’s insane because it’s still bullshit, 1 in 400 would mean that over 800,000 Americans get shot every day, and every single person in America gets shot every 13 months or so.

jaspersgroove,

The post says “at least 1” which implies that if anything they’re rounding that number down, because on some days that number is 2. So they’re suggesting that on any given day between 800,000 and 1.6 million Americans get shot, or that every single person in the country gets shot every 13 months or so.

If they’re going to use a number that wildly inaccurate then I immediately assume that every other number in the statement is equally inaccurate, even if that’s not actually the case.

jaspersgroove,

Last time I got into a fight with a dairy farmer I ended up in a coma for 37 days and when I woke up whenever I tried to move my fingers my toes wiggled instead.

jaspersgroove,

There are some democrats trying to shut down a range near me…mostly because it is a police training range near a residential neighborhood and apparently some people don’t like listening to cops mag-dumping AR-15’s at 10 o’clock at night, even if it is “essential training” for “low visibility conditions”, according to a public statement by the county sheriffs office.

If it were near a rich neighborhood full of republicans that shit would have been shut down, declared a superfund site so some construction company could rake in six figures to clean up all the lead contamination, and turned into a park years ago.

jaspersgroove,

Absolutely! Leftist gun owners do exist, there are literally dozens of us!

Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.

The point is for you to develop your skillset so you can rely on those instead of having a bunch of extraneous shit to carry around. Your brain counts as worn weight.

“Shaving all the excess weight off your kit” is a good starting point, but it seems like a lot of people use that as an excuse to go shopping. If you’ve got the money to drop on all that super expensive ultralight gear from Big Agnes, Toaks, and whoever else, more power to you, but spending a bunch of money is not and should not be the point.

My backpacking tent weighs almost 6 pounds. I don’t give a shit. It’s a 2 man tent that I’ve had for over 20 years and it’s still in great shape, and I can set it up blindfolded in about 90 seconds. I know that tent like the back of my hand and I have spent hundreds of nights sleeping comfortably inside if. I actually bought a fancy UL tent and tried it out, and it just fucked my whole system up lol. Tried it for a few trips and ultimately saving 2 pounds on my tent was not worth the hassle of rearranging my entire setup and consciously monitoring my every move near the thing due to being paranoid about ripping a hole in a $500 tent with fabric thinner than Donald Trump’s skin. Just an example of how agonizing over every ounce and making sure you have the absolute most cutting-edge gear is not everything it’s cracked up to be.

The real goal is to know yourself, your skills, your itinerary, and the environment you will be in well enough that you do not bring anything with you that you don’t actually need, and to develop your skills so that you can do more with less. If a bottle of wine and some cheese takes your hike from a 3-star experience to a 5-star experience, you need it. If someone on the internet says it’s too heavy, fuck ‘em.

jaspersgroove,

Ditch the box, just bring the inside bag, that’ll shave 3.76 ounces. Plus when the bag is empty you can blow it up with air and play drunk volleyball.

jaspersgroove,

If Americans weren’t buying them, they wouldn’t be coming here.

The same concept applies for illegal immigrants, too. If republicans weren’t hiring them, they wouldn’t be crossing the border.

jaspersgroove,

If your cast iron pan is also your primary weapon it counts as worn weight

jaspersgroove,

Ultralight started as an exercise in minimalism but most online forums have devolved into gear fetishism instead. Done properly it is a thoughtful exercise designed to help you build and subsequently rely on your skills instead of having a different gadget for every scenario, but a lot of people online will just talk shit about your load out instead.

Like, excuuuuuuse me all to hell for not having $2k to drop on a bunch of cutting edge gear from Big Agnes.

jaspersgroove,

Little of column a, little of column b…combine that with peoples propensity for one-upsmanship and the convenient anonymity of the internet and you have a great recipe for people that are more than happy to gatekeep and talk shit as opposed to putting actual effort into more in-depth analysis and discussion.

jaspersgroove,

I don’t know if that’s the best way to frame the argument. It’s not about keeping this place “small and unimportant”, it’s that by now we’ve all seen what happens when websites like this get big.

Reddit started out as “it will always be free, and we’ll never mess with your personal data or shove ads down your throat” too. That’s just not sustainable when you start dealing with tens of millions of users and billions of page views a day. Hosting the servers capable of supporting the traffic alone will cost tens of millions of dollars per year.

In other words, if Lemmy gets as big or as popular as Reddit, it will get just as shitty and corporate as Reddit. Guaranteed.

jaspersgroove,

So being open source and federated means server space will be free forever? Interesting hypothesis.

jaspersgroove,

“We’re not selling an evil product, we’re just running a multibillion dollar cartel in an evil way. That’s totally different.”
