hoodlem,

Yeah in a way it was was a win-win. We all find a community we like more. Reddit maintains an enormous user base. I’ve found I no longer care what they do because I like this place better anyway.

What is a good hobby for a depressed person?

So i still have depression and im constantly bored, i feel like a loser who cant do anything right. I want to let my creativeness out, make something i can share with the world or family, but im probably dreaming too big. I cant stand being depressed and bored, it stinks, everyone tells me to work out but i lack the motivation...

hoodlem,

I play a video game (usually a retro one) on a low difficulty level. Then beat the computer over and over again. Bonus points if it’s a game I usually avoid because it’s too hard.

Gives a constant feeling of satisfaction at beating the computer over and over.

hoodlem,

I use Brave browser, which has ad and tracker blocking built in.

I also have all my devices using a piHole for ad, malware, and tracker protection.

hoodlem,

Nice. What do you plan to do with it?

hoodlem,

Ok so what I do is I grab all the cords as tightly as I can against my body, then roll duct tape around it. Make a couple passes to really squeeze down the size. Also get a bright color tape so you can see the cords later. I use neon orange

hoodlem,

Coffee, black. I’m a regular joe and I like my joe regular.

hoodlem,

I like Stunktank. It pleasantly surprised me with its defensive capabilities, including type matchups.

Now for the actual skunks, no thanks. My dog got sprayed by skunks several time, and it’s repulsive. And really the only thing you can do is wait.

How to get over not having a good college experience?

I’m going into my last year of college and I kinda felt like I did college wrong. Like, my grades are good but everything else about college I failed at. Like socially and stuff, after 4 years I barely know anybody. I commuted(to avoid debt, and did so successfully) so maybe that’s part of my problem....

hoodlem,

Same here. I also commuted. Honestly I felt kind of robbed of the college experience I wanted. I went to grad school and had a much funner time.

hoodlem,

I use vger.app on the desktop. I got hooked on it on my phone and iPad. And the desktop works great too.

Christie on new Trump charges: ‘These guys were acting like the Corleones with no experience’ (thehill.com)

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ® compared new charges against former President Trump that accuse him of working with Mar-a-Lago employees to delete surveillance footage at the club to the tactics of the fictionalized Corleone organized crime family....

hoodlem,

Christie was one of the first to drop out of the 2016 primary race in support of Trump. He’s also responsible for essentially ending Rubio’s campaign right in the middle of a debate.

His early Trump support will always define him to me. With that said I’m glad he is actually speaking truth now.

PeerTube has a federation problem

With the mass migrations of Reddit users to Lemmy/Kbin, and Twitter now speedrunning its own mass extinction, it seems me that the eventual future of social media is de-centralized. I like how Lemmy is slowing turning out, even if it still has some work to do and growing pains to fix up. It’s still able to inform me of all of...

hoodlem,

My opinions are the same as yours, in my little experience. There’s not a lot of content on there, you can’t see content from other instances, and the content that is on there is not high quality.

One thought that crossed my mind was having a PeerTube instance backing each of the major Lemmy instances for video upload. Anything to reduce our dependence on corporate frequently used sites like YouTube and imgr.

Ok so here’s where it starts falling apart in my head. First, as another poster mentioned, the costs would be through the roof compared to a link aggregating site like Lemmy. From what I understand PeerTube does some Bit torrenty stuff to reduce bandwidth usage. And IPFS could help as well. But at the end of the day you need a server hosting this as a source of truth, with the monumental cost that accounts for.

The other huge problem is moderation. We need strong moderation because jackasses are going to upload CSAM. As single files. Spliced into the middle of legitimate videos. And the fediverse is way too important to have it be associated with that crap. So like I said, extremely strong moderation, for free.

I want to see Peertube take off and overcome these hurdles. If there’s anything I can help develop I’d be happy to take on a ticket.

hoodlem,

Sounds like a jerk. Hey if she wants to be a a manager maybe she could be transferred to a different store… 🤞

If you have private 1-1 conversations with your boss that might be a good time to bring this up.

The Fediverse has a Mental Health Problem (scribe.rip)

This is a very interesting article about the long-term sustainability of the Fediverse for moderators, administrators, and developers. We’ve already had two of our lovely Beehaw admins take breaks to take care of themselves as they experience the burnout associated with maintaining a community, and I think for a lot of use we...

hoodlem,

Good article. I would imagine one large stressor for admins is “how am I supposed to pay for this?” With instances needing to upgrade because of the huge influx of users.

The article suggests a non-profit for mental health support for admins and moderators. While I like the idea, I think we can go further—a non profit to help pay for running instances and paying admin and developer salaries. The names mentioned in the article would make sense for something like this (for instance, Mozilla. Also, how about the EFF?)

What's your favorite Steel type Pokémon? (m.archives.bulbagarden.net)

I like Orthworm a lot, I was pretty enthralled by this steel worm Pokémon. It’s pretty cute and the hands on its steel core is interesting. It’s the first one I think from the new generation I really liked, similar to Appletun from Generation VIII. I have one on my team for Pokémon Scarlet even.

hoodlem,

Oh boy. There some good ones, but I’ve got to go with Metagross. I had not seen it before and when I was playing Pokémon Colosseum (or XD?) the boss had one. Terrifying.

hoodlem,

This is very interesting. What date will show up in Lemmy for the post? The current date/time or the original?

hoodlem,

Nice workaround!

hoodlem,

It’s not that hard to use multiple apps. I’m sure most of us have dozens of them.

I agree. And Musk/X are moving towards a goal no one wants.

hoodlem,

Good. Of all the big tech companies, Amazon is most in need of breaking up. They own:

  • eCommerce
  • Advertising
  • Delivery (delivered by Amazon)
  • Product Creation (kindle, kindle fire, etc)
  • AWS. Cloud infrastructure—the monster in the room and most likely to be broken off.
  • Content. purchase of eBooks, music, movies, etc
  • Publishing (eBooks)

I hope they do get broken up as well as the other big tech companies. It’s the best thing for all of us, the consumers.

hoodlem,

According to a post from Zuckerberg on his Instagram broadcast channel

Seems like a missed opportunity, not making the announcement on Threads itself.

hoodlem,

It bugs me, it really does. This rebranding is a great opportunity for Meta. Get some high profile influencers and celebs to announce exclusivity deals with Threads. I very much dislike Meta, but dislike X/Twitter even more. So Meta, have at them.

hoodlem,

LMAO I’m dying.

I wonder how many people did this. I did, and deleted my posts as well. But I was mostly a lurker there and so my edits and deletes didn’t really mean anything.

hoodlem,

I think it could be. But right now there is not much content. In fact, as I’ve browsed, the content that is on there is not good at all.

I think it could be useful say with a Peertube instance associated with a Lemmy instance, and when you want to post a video it hosts it in Peertube.

hoodlem,

It makes me wonder though at what point an “author” will reveal that a published, reviewed work was written completely by AI.

hoodlem,

Me talking about my dad’s new truck: “This is the nicest, biggest backseat I’ve ever been in”

What’s your favorite Poison type Pokémon? (m.archives.bulbagarden.net)

My favorite Pokémon is Skuntank, so of course it’s my favorite poison type Pokémon. I saw this fan artwork of this skunk Pokémon online and then it quickly became my favorite Pokémon. I used it a lot in various Pokémon games since. Its most interesting move is Flamethrower, it’s impressive to learn a fire type move like...

Looking for r/menslib equivalent, like mensrights without the toxicity (kbin.social)

Greetings, Kbinners (and anyone else from the 'verse who might be reading this). Back on the platform most of us migrated from, there was/is a subreddit called r/menslib, which was like r/mensrights minus the misogyny and shitting on marginalized groups and minorities. Those of you who subbed will remember it was a great place...

hoodlem,

If not let’s create it. It should probably be heavily moderated to avoid attracting the toxicity.

hoodlem,

The few conservative communities are nearly empty. But I find Lemmy to be less political overall than Reddit.

Molly v.s. Signal

I am not comfortable that signal depends proprietary google library. However, I find that Molly lags significantly behind signal (around 1 to 2 weeks, so maybe not as significant as I thought), but I am just concerned that if there is a security fix in signal, molly will not be able to react as fast....

hoodlem,

And there’s an app which does this, too - it’s called Briar.

Cool I had not heard of this, thanks!

hoodlem,

@lengsel not.coffee I did not, super interesting.

hoodlem,

Very nice!

hoodlem,

My setup exactly, with the addition of using M-Discs to backup my core important stuff.

hoodlem,

I am completely out of the loop and had not heard of this company’s products, including this one. Looks awesome! I’m surprised it plays GBA games in addition to GB and GBC.

I know I have my Pokemon Silver cartridge around somewhere. I’ve got plenty of GBA ones. Maybe time to look at this device.

hoodlem,

I feel like anything companies do are meaningless, expensive gestures. The genie is out of the bottle.

hoodlem,

Well, this is too bad. I don’t like Meta but I love my Quest 2. Sounds like features for the Quest 3 have had their scope reduced to cut costs.

I’m hopeful the Quest 3 will do well because the VR space is really cool, and there are not any real competitors at this price point.

SamXavia, to fediverse
@SamXavia@kbin.social avatar

So i've been trying to talk to a friend about the #Fediverse lately and they seem to think that the US Government will crack down on it because Billionaires might get annoyed if users move away from normal Social Media to move across to the #Fediverse. What do you think about this?

hoodlem,

I agree. At least from the corporate point of view, I think they see the fediverse as a small set of people who are unlikely to use the company’s product anyway.

hoodlem,

Oooh I’m getting motivated by this post.

  • Home Assistant
  • Pihole
  • Jellyfin
  • Plex
  • *arr series, at least up when I am looking for specific content
  • Lemmy

I tried Mastodon. Too resource intensive for little I use it.

Next up in my list to try:

  • Vaultwarden
  • Peertube
  • Matrix
  • Bookwyrm
hoodlem,

Thanks for the tip, I will give it a look.

hoodlem,

But conditions are different now. Government officials mulling how to regulate large tech platforms today often turn to the idea of requiring interoperability, says Georgios Petropoulos, a researcher at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. Threads is not currently available in Europe, due at least in part to uncertainties related to the EU’s new Digital Markets Act and other regulations—especially rules related to how Threads user data will interact with data on other platforms, Petropoulos believes. The new EU rules also contain provisions on interoperability that are still being hashed out.

Ah ha, this is the first great explanation I’ve heard for why Meta may be interested in joining the fediverse. Avoiding regulators.

hoodlem,

22 instances in Antarctica? I’m guessing that’s actually those who don’t want to reveal their location? Or maybe they’ve trained some penguins as sysadmins.

hoodlem,

Something very similar happened to me up in the mountains. It ended the same :-). WCGW?

hoodlem,

The running (and jumping!) out onto the ice was on purpose. Falling in kind of just… happened.

hoodlem,

I use a 4-bay Synology. Works great. For video you could use Plex or Jellyfin.

hoodlem,

To Zuckerberg, the concept has been proved out. The rest is simply an execution problem.

“The focus for the rest of the year is improving the basics and retention,” he wrote. “It’ll take time to stabilize, but once we nail that then we’ll focus on growing the community. We’ve run this playbook many times (FB, IG, Stories, Reels, etc) and I’m confident Threads is on a good path too.”

I don’t doubt this. I think Threads will continue to grow. Musk’s self-destructive nature will give Threads openings to grow. And I think Threads has some aces up its sleeves for some PR wins. Maybe exclusivity agreements with celebs, popular YouTubers, and other influencers.
