echodot,

Sure but there are star systems that are above and below the exact ecliptic of the galactic plane. We’re not on the ecliptic that’s why you can’t see the milky way as well in the southern hemisphere because we’re kind of below it.

If a ship was travelling from Sol to Arcturus it would travel up (relative to the galactic plane) because we’re slightly below it and it’s considerably above it. The galaxy is very thin compared to its width, but it’s still of thousands of light years high.

echodot,

Well the guy is wrong, we can’t just believe it.

echodot,

I don’t think I’ve ever seen combat in Star Trek that takes place over a distance of more than a couple of hundred kilometres.

What’s the range on a phaser or a torpedo, can it even go that far.

Long range weapons are so rare in Star Trek that when they do turn up they’re basically what the whole episode is about.

echodot,

The ships can land and take off at least some of them can but they don’t fly around in the atmosphere they just go up and down they’re either on the ground or they’re in space but they can’t really manoeuvre.

Except for that one episode of Voyager where they just kind of forgot about that, but I think that was hand-waved away by saying that they just made the shields into a bubble and so essentially from the air’s perspective the ship was a sphere. That’s apparently what the shuttlecraft do too, which is why they fall like a brick whenever they’re shot down.

echodot,

They will development videos from God knows how long ago. No one really knows what the game is like now.

echodot,

Also available on whatever terribly named console Microsoft comes up with next.

echodot,

Can they please make the online mode better. Spawn in get blown up, spawn in get shot, spawning get run over, it’s boring.

echodot,

Oh my god it’s going to have so many microtransactions it’s going to be awesome. Not.

echodot,

Yeah so I looked into this little while ago and I own my own house so in theory I can put the box in. The problem is I only have on the street parking and the house is set back away from the road and there’s a garden between the road in the house.

So how the bleeding hell am I supposed to charge a car? I’d have to run a long cable through the garden, over the fence, over the pedestrian walkway, over the grass verge and to the car. Someone is going to trip over it and then think they can sue me.

Or the government could just install a street furniture like they do parking metres, but I have no way to force them to do that.

echodot,

Personally I’d replace part of the garden with a driveway and parking space.

Well I don’t really want to have to do that if I can help it because if I did that I wouldn’t really have a garden anymore, but also I don’t think I can anyway because there’s a grass verge and I don’t think I own that, I think the city does, and I would have to pull that up to lay the driveway.

But also if I rented I wouldn’t be able to do any of that anyway so they still need to go the street furniture route. I don’t think vandalisms are particular problem because if they put down load of them they just become common and people would ignore them. Also it’s a housing street, it’s not a random street in the city so the only people around here are people who live around here and vandalising your own stuff seems pretty dumb. I’m sure it’ll happen but I don’t think it’ll be a major problem.

Every shopping mall in my city already has a parking spaces where you can charge an EV.

In my experiences usually some prick with a pickup truck in them. Apparently it’s actually a offence to park in them if you don’t have an electric vehicle, but have yet to see the law enforce. One time I saw a cop parked in one so, there you go.

echodot,

Anyway don’t worry about it because commander Sisco has normal pips, and he’s worse than any of them.

echodot,

It doesn’t look anything like a pigeon.

Although to be honest the real nasty birds are gulls. They can sod off, horrible things.

Bats are quiet, don’t steal my food, and eat all the annoying insects. Bats are great

echodot,

I can do weekends.

No we’re not open on weekends.

echodot,

Also it hangs around until you remember to cancel it. So sometimes you have reminders to buy some milk that’s been on screen for 8 months.

echodot,

The trouble is you then have to pull your phone out to make sure that she’s actually done it right.

Half the time it struggles with “what’s the weather forecast for tomorrow”. Often replies with “it will rain the rest of today”, yeah, but what about my question?

echodot,

Yeah but I have levels of priority. I book holidays and weddings 6 months out, I don’t want to block out an entire morning just so I can go to the dentists in 6 months. What if several months down the line something more important comes up and I have to rearrange the appointment? Which by the way always happens because it’s like 6 months out and that’s plenty of time for random fate to throw me something.

So I always end up rearranging these damn appointments anyway so why can’t they just not require me to book them that far out?

echodot,

I’m pretty sure they triage things. If you are actually going to die if you didn’t see a doctor immediately I don’t think they’d go no come back in 3 weeks.

echodot,

Oh we are.

They get so smug about it on Twitter as well it’s infuriating. Look we’ve taken a dangerous amount of weed off the streets nearly 4 grams.

echodot,

The implication being that covid-19 is a field wealth redistribution program?

echodot,

Didn’t it just come from taxes. I know they claim there’s never any money but there’s always money, they just don’t to use any of it.

They’re always claiming they need to raise taxes but they don’t, they just need to spend them. Also possibly maybe they shouldn’t give contracts to their chums as backhanders. Maybe then they get better deals.

echodot,

Especially with the war on work from home that seems to be going on at the moment.

Can’t you guys just apply to work for European companies remotely wouldn’t that be a workaround? I know my company has a few remote American employees and they’re not totally useless.

echodot,

Clearly that’s your fault for not getting into arms production.

echodot,

Have they tried not making a shit app, that actually seems purposely designed to not achieve its stated goals? Just a thought.

How about not locking all the actual useful features behind a paywall. If people actually get dates they will be prepared to pay for more premium features but they actually have to get dates to begin with.

echodot,

I had a girlfriend that I met on a dating app and her mother was really hung up on the whole dating app thing. She never liked it if we told people that we met on a dating app.

So we both started coming up with ridiculous stories about how we met. I think at one point we claimed that my girlfriend was a Chinese mail ordered bride despite her not being Chinese and having red hair. Used to do it with a straight face too, used to really confuse people.

echodot,

You’ll never get a woman, all you’ll ever have is embarrassing holodecking directions. The writers hate you.

echodot,

You would have to live somewhere where it snowed a lot to be worth getting a special machine to clear it. Otherwise I just use a shovel or knowing me I just ignore it until it melted on its own.

What I need is a leaf blower, except I need a special leaf blower that dries all the wet leaves out first so it will actually work and no one seems to have invented one. They all seem to be designed for some weird market where leaves fall down off trees and then it occasionally stops raining for 2 minutes in a row. I don’t believe such a mythical place exists.

echodot,

They weren’t even AI generated. Is there a AI generated at least they’d be unique from each other, there were a series of randomly lead images. It wasn’t AI that made them, it was basically just a bunch of if statements.

AI generated NFTs would also be pointless because anyone could get them or something very similar by giving the same prompt to an AI but at least they’d have some merit, at least they would be interesting.

echodot,

Not to be confused with photokinesis which gives you the power to turn on all lights within your area of effect.

Useful for when people are driving around at night without their headlights on.

echodot,

How on earth do you accidentally buy medical grade lighting? Like it must have been really expensive and no one at any point that “why are these light bulbs so expensive”. Also, why didn’t the shipping company think it was weird that a hospitality venue they wanted hundreds and hundreds of medical decontamination lights?

And presumably electricians fitted them and their non-standard design didn’t raise any eyebrows?

Literally everyone involved in this story is a massive idiot.

echodot,

I think Lemmy just compressors images that are in the comments in a way it doesn’t do for posts. It’s really weird and kind of broken behaviour. You are probably better off hosting it somewhere and then just linking to the host.

echodot,

The thing is, if they get really stupid with it I could just go ahead and install pi hole. I haven’t already because it’s a bit of a fiddle on and I don’t apparently don’t need it yet. There’s no way for the government to mandate against that, unless they actually want to ban me from owning a computer, Which obviously won’t really work.

echodot,

That’s how you tell if a gun is loaded, you point it at someone and pulled a trigger, I’m pretty sure that’s the approved method.

In theory you could check in advance but that seems like a lot of work. Excuse me while I attempt to disarm this bomb by kicking it.

echodot,

If you banned morons from serving in the police force they’re going to be short staffed. I’m sure that some police officers have brains in the same way that I’m sure that aliens exist, I just don’t think they’ve ever visited earth.

echodot,

Perhaps he’s an idiot terrorist? They’re actually quite common.

echodot,

In the UK they took the bins away for a bit, but then it got annoying so they brought them back, and added an announcement to say basically that if you see a terrorist being a terrorist you should probably tell someone, thank you.

That’ll stop them.

Apple Argued Safari Is Three Different Browsers to Avoid Regulation in EU (www.macrumors.com)

It has now emerged that after being informed that Safari was likely to fall under the DMA’s regulations, Apple filed formal a response to the European Union claiming that Safari is, in fact, “three distinct web browsers.” The company’s claim is based on the argument that Safari for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS are entirely...

echodot,

It was a pretty crap arguement given the European commission were able to counter the arguement using Apple’s own marketing.

echodot,

The problem is there wasn’t a nearby cop that could have shot everyone, that would have sold the problem.

echodot,

Well an arguement could be made that he’s not going to do it again.

Think about the distinction between a contract killer and somebody who committed a crime of passion. Are both of those people equally likely to reoffend?

If the objective is to either reform someone or simply remove a threat from society then both cases require different approaches.

echodot,

Honestly I don’t really care. If I didn’t already have a PS5 I guess I’d get that one instead but I have no interest in going out and getting the slim version. Maybe if they made some games for it.

echodot,

That doesn’t really count for anything unless people other than cops look at the footage. Not that I’m saying it should be made publicly available but somebody independent should see it.

If it turns out there’s no body cam footage that’s a problem too but again unless someone outside the police force can see that there’s no body cam footage the lack of footage isn’t ever going to be made public knowledge.

The police have body cam footage to make sure they’re doing their actual jobs and not something else, for the bloody useless if they turn them off or no one ever reviews the footage. They are not primarily there for the police’s benefit they’re there for ours.

echodot,

The fact that there are 11 quadrillion streaming services now makes me suspect that there actually cannot be a secret cabal of shady business types running the world. Because they are all far too interested in competing with each other to actually notice that if they stop doing that then they’d be better off.

Mozilla Senior Director of Content explained why Mozilla has taken an interest in the fediverse and Mastodon (techcrunch.com)

"the company looked at the history of social media over the past decade and didn’t like what it saw… existing companies that are only model motivated by profit and just insane user growth, and are willing to tolerate and amplify really toxic content because it looks like engagement… "

echodot,

It’s open source, anyone can fork the repo any time they want. The original devs won’t like it but also there is bugger all they can do about it. It’s just that it would be a full time job to take on and no one has the time.

echodot,

the young generation is doing everything it can to make money to meet their fame-obssessed ideals.

What the bleeding hell is that supposed to mean?

echodot,

I feel like I missed out on seminal moment in my childhood because all my teachers were like 50 years old. Where was my hot English teacher? All I got was an old bat who hated children and didn’t bother to hide it.

echodot,

Do you have any idea how many videos I had to watch until I discovered something that I found offensive, it’s disgusting. Only fans needs a better search engine.

echodot,

If American schools are supposed to stop school shootings they will be at it all day.

echodot,

This comment is pretty old.

It’s from 2021, it’s post pandemic for god’s sake it’s hardly ancient history.

I’ve probably said some ideological embarrassing things in the past.

Yeah but no one cares about the things you say because you’re not a major software developer. If you were it would also be perfectly acceptable to have a go at you about some of your less desirable talking points.

Unless he’s still pushing these talking points

Yeah but he is isn’t he? That’s the point he hasn’t got any better he’s still out there doing it.
