davidgro,

I bought one of these from China, using it right now (in the US). It definitely has some quirks, but does what I bought it for (gaming) very well indeed.

davidgro,

After setting up Nova Launcher, using button navigation, the home button would only go home from certain places (such as the app switcher). Also the nav buttons were not centered - instead there was a Taskbar with some of the system apps, and I couldn’t change which apps were on it at all (besides disabling the apps themselves).
So I had to finally learn gesture navigation. It’s not as annoying as I expected it to be. I actually like it for the most part.

I had to change the font to the AOSP one instead of Lenovo’s one because in some places it added extra spaces to apostrophes, but conversely I had to switch the system spell check from AOSP to Gboard because it was marking as misspelled any word that was followed by a period. (Like that one, or this one.)

It doesn’t support work profile and therefore apps like Island or Shelter - but does have a built-in app copying system. It’s not as good though, I copied Chrome and couldn’t find a way to log it into my ‘alternative’ Google account (or even my regular one) because it says I have no Google account, then it opens Settings in my normal profile - with the account(s) - instead of the empty copy profile so I could add one the copied Chrome could see. (Can’t copy Settings or other system apps either)

Still no GPS, which is not as much of a problem for me as it used to be when I played Pokemon Go all the time

Stuff like that, nothing I’m considering a serious problem.

davidgro,

That’s the first on topic Testa I’ve seen in years.

davidgro,

Thank you, Today I learned that grammatical gender can in fact have purpose. Some questions though:

In that first example for Agreement, does this depend on the nouns in question coincidentally having different gender, or does the grammar enforce that? (Such as switching one if they would otherwise match - although that might conflict with the Derivation thing.) And can a sentence in those languages refer to 3 or more nouns? That would seem to break the disambiguation effect.

davidgro,

That’s pretty much all it is as far as I’m concerned.

davidgro,

Hover your mouse pointer over those numbers on the webpage (which was coded by the Lemmy devs) - It says things like “2 points • 4 Upvotes • 2 Downvotes”

Reddit didn’t invent those terms.

davidgro,

The percentages change. At the lower end, in binary every number that isn’t 0 itself starts with a 1.

This fact is actually used to save one bit in the format that computers usually use to store floating point (fractional instead of integer) numbers.

davidgro,

Only if you have a vision (or were godlike before visiting like a certain pair of twins)

Titanium Backup became worthless when split APKs became a thing after it stopped updating. Looks like oandbackup claims to support them, but I see an open issue about some split APK apps not working after a restore (which is what TiBu did)

Edit: So in the spirit of OPs question, an app I gladly paid for was Swift Backup

davidgro,

Bots on Reddit already steal parts of upvoted comments and post them elsewhere in the same post to get upvotes themselves (so the account can be used for spam later)

Even with context they can be very difficult to spot sometimes.

davidgro,

Na Na, Na Na Na-Na-Na Na-Na…

davidgro,

When I finally had to leave my dying old phone (LG V20 from 2016) the Pixel 7 phones were about to be released, so I preordered a P7Pro. It’s been really good to me so far.
Reception is at least as good as my last phone, fingerprint reader works nearly every time on the first try, battery life is… Ok (but I work it really hard) root was easy (one of my primary criteria for phone shopping), etc.

There are certainly things I lost in the move, but most of them I’d lose with any modern flagship phone: Removable battery, headphone jack, IR port, 100% usable screen area. And one loss that is specific to the P7 phones for now, but will eventually be all of them: 32-bit apps.

Android 13 does have some annoying restrictions that Android 8 did not, but it also has a lot of improvements (including general stability) and of course 12 GB of RAM can do much more than 4 could, so that’s a nice upgrade.

davidgro,

Yup. I also really liked the “second screen” method of handling the camera cutout

davidgro,

It really does. I think their music budget is probably larger than some AAA games’ entire budget.

davidgro,

Obtaining usable energy at any hour of the day and in any weather for one thing. That will be less important as batteries or other grid scale systems improve, but for now it’s a big factor.

Total potential output per m^2 is another factor, especially in higher density areas

davidgro,

As far as I am concerned, the goal was to get them to renegotiate the API pricing and restrictions, at the risk of the IPO tanking if they didn’t - even if they would have to fire Steve Huffman first.

So yeah, it was a failed protest. If Lemmy continues to grow I’ll continue to spend most of my time here, but that seems like it’s no guarantee.

… Of course if (as in when) Reddit removes old.reddit then I’ll never return there beyond holding my nose when trying to access search results. But 90%ish of the users are already on new reddit/official app and just don’t care.

davidgro,

You’re right, what I meant was if it doesn’t shrink by a lot as users go back to Reddit (for those niche topics for example)

davidgro,

Here. I have a few of the “2.0” model at my house and it’s great for bugs which have landed or don’t fly, hitting them in the air is tough.

They have other colors, and apparently now even a CO₂ powered pistol for really big bugs (with proprietary ammo refills, no thanks)

Of the liquids you listed, I think the hydrogen peroxide would be the fastest and most flame-filled death, more than the magma.

100% H2O2 is Very much unlike the 3% kind that can be purchased at a store.
It might even explode, I know shipping tanks of it can and I think that’s usually under 100%.

davidgro,

We do know some - growling, whining, yelping, etc. Basically the ones for a single strong emotion.

What movies, books or tv shows are meant to spoof/parody a particular genre while actually being a great example of the genre?

The 3 that come to mind for me are Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The Princess Bride. All three are poking fun at their respective genres but also are great examples of the genre. I’m curious if Lemmy has other such examples.

davidgro,

Totally different but the same description would work for it: Cabin in the Woods

(Suggestions) Looking for an app the echos what you say

Hi all I am looking for an app recommendation that echos what you say into it. The regular voice recording apps are good, but I am just trying to hear pronunciation of multiple words and don’t want to delete a bunch of small files every time. If it can loop the last recording that would also be great TIA

davidgro,

In the old days those apps like “Talking Tom Cat” did that (through a voice filter) - maybe there are still ‘games’ like that (especially for kids)

davidgro,

Apparently Email is a German or French word for enamel, but yeah, your point stands.

My Opinion: NewPipe, Piped, Invidious, etc's days are numbered.

With Reddit shutting down its API setting a precedent in the corporate tech world (and Reddit was a major outlier in that a ton of their users are technical minded and support third party clients, YouTube does not have that kind of userbase and will not get backlash for it), Twitter doing whatever the fuck they’re doing, and...

davidgro,

NewPipe at least already doesn’t use the API, it scrapes the website.

… Which it just occurred to me might be one of the reasons Google is pushing that web integrity thing. Dang.

davidgro,

Just a guess, but can LibreOffice open, edit, then save as (or at least print to) PDF?

davidgro,

That “levitation” video is worthless: One edge of it is still resting on the magnet, and plain old steel screws will do that if you put them on a plain old speaker magnet. If they can’t even manage to show actual levitation after claiming it, then I highly suspect the rest of the claims are just as invalid.

davidgro,

This is about Europe mostly. It says it’s used a little in America, but all over in Europe.

davidgro,

On the plus side, having the app installed means every time it updates I can refresh my 1-star review.

davidgro,

“Besides, the stainless steel construction made the flux dispersal…(watch beeps) Look out!”

davidgro,

Different kernel. 95 was still DOS based. I believe a significant amount of stuff (especially drivers of course) which worked on one side didn’t work on the other.

XP was the “merger” - the first NT based system for the consumer market.

davidgro,

A lot of people did use it on home computers (myself included) but the target was still businesses. XP had TV ads and colorful themes, and all that, while Windows 2000… Didn’t. (Well maybe on C-SPAN or something) And the most basic (major) edition was “Professional” instead of something like “Home” as XP had.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the big box computer makers did ship with it to home users, but it wasn’t “meant” for them.

davidgro,

I like campy movies, so I liked this one. It’s so very 80s fantasy/sci-fi.

What's something you used to do/see/say but don't anymore because you don't feel it's right?

Me personally? I’ve become much less tolerant of sexist humor. Back in the day, cracking a joke at women’s expense was pretty common when I was a teen. As I’ve matured and become aware to the horrific extent of toxicity and bigotry pervading all tiers of our individualistic society, I’ve come to see how exclusionarly and...

davidgro,

I’m mostly succeeding now at not calling another driver “he” by default. I don’t know who they are, and can call them something better, as I just did.

davidgro,

I seriously can’t imagine a flavor so good that I would be willing to experience significant (let alone severe) pain in order to taste it. (Nor Have I been able to taste any extra flavors in even mildly spicy food.)

I don’t doubt your experience, but I absolutely can’t relate to it, or for that matter comprehend it.

davidgro,

I think it’s incredible how the internet can connect people who come from different planets like this.

I mean yeah, if food is more bitter than it is sweet then it’s unpleasant to me (even the darkest chocolate has a lot of sugar) but that still doesn’t directly stimulate pain receptors like capsaicin does at any level. Very low levels of “heat” (pain) are indeed tolerable to me, but No level above zero is more enjoyable than zero, for any type of food.

I also don’t understand that concept of “too sweet” (for things that should be sweet, I am not talking about pizza for example). The only thing that stops me from just buying sugar in bulk and eating bowls of it at a time is concern for my health/teeth. (Which of course is a strong concern, and so far has managed to keep me from being diabetic)

davidgro,

Meanwhile it disappoints me that their whipped cream isn’t sweet enough…

davidgro,

It looks like they are planning for some services that will let people contribute publicly… How will moderation work?

The way it’s written sounds like the answer will be “it won’t” - which would mean it will very quickly become a Nazi bar (think Voat or 4chan)
