davidgro, to asklemmy in Social media (like Lemmy) is composed entirely of public conversations. Yet it is treated as private property. Doesn't that seem rather fucked up?

Actual public bulletin boards are generally on private property (such as grocery stores) and it’s up to the property owners to moderate them (taking things down after a delay or when it’s inappropriate, etc)

davidgro, to asklemmy in What are your"too lazy to cook" recipe ?

My family’s spaghetti and meat sauce recipe. 5 ingredients:

Water, salt, pasta;
ground beef, tomato sauce (from a jar if fancy, but canned is great)

  1. Boil and salt the water. Add the pasta. Boil until as soft as you want. While that’s going
  2. Cook the meat, breaking into little chunks. Then drain the fat. Then add the sauce and some salt and mix it. Stop it some time after it’s boiling

Serve together.

(Of course there are details like how much of stuff, but that’s the jist of it)

davidgro, (edited ) to asklemmy in What shows have extended therapy arcs?

Star Trek: Discovery has some, it’s not usually a major plot point, but it’s present.

Edit: How to watch: Borrow DVDs from the library. Free, ad free, and legal.

davidgro, to memes in The future is now

Buy the key on Amazon and then you can change the settings to dispense more or automatically

davidgro, to asklemmy in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Yup. That movie doesn’t even look like itself.

davidgro, to asklemmy in You have to spend the rest of your life in a micronation. Which do you choose?

Cascadia/Pacifica would be my choice, I’m already in the borders of either one, and economically either would be a powerful nation, with decent politics

davidgro, to worldnews in EU approves ban on destruction of unsold clothing

Oh, interesting. I wasn’t aware of the reselling thing, and from the votes it seems a lot of others weren’t either. I guess if it’s just punched on something like the label/tag then that would be fine. Or maybe use permanent dye/bleach to blot it out.

davidgro, to technology in Learn in simple terms how ChatGPT works and why people are still needed

One quick typo I noticed: “For reference, one letter is a byte and a gigabyte is roughly a trillion bytes”. That’s billion of course.

Otherwise, great article!

davidgro, to worldnews in EU approves ban on destruction of unsold clothing

Yeah, they might after this

davidgro, to worldnews in EU approves ban on destruction of unsold clothing

I’m not sure what you mean. They are (currently) explicitly making sure that the clothing never ends anywhere that wants/needs clothes - as in the goal is anti-charity.

Under the new law, I hope they can’t take a hole puncher to it. If they are allowed, they’ll do as much damage as they legally can.

davidgro, to worldnews in EU approves ban on destruction of unsold clothing

The issue is that some of the brands are intentionally destroying unsold clothing so ‘the poors’ can’t end up wearing their brand and I guess diluting the brand’s reputation or something.

davidgro, to asklemmy in What do you call this place?

Ah - I didn’t know we were the only ones who do. But yes, it’s nice to have that. I understand we also have the largest ferry system in at least the US, although I think that’s not directly related to the rivers.

davidgro, to asklemmy in What do you call this place?

Interesting. I haven’t heard them called that, even though I’m in a state where most electricity is from hydro, And my state borders Canada.

davidgro, to firefox in Firefox is close to not beeing supported by US government's websites

Unfortunately, the masses just don’t care - extensions/add-ons are “too complex” for the typical user.

davidgro, to asklemmy in Which items/products were you once able to get from local shops on a whim that you now more or less have to order online?

Jeans that fit me.

I’m not even that unusual of a size - just taller than most, and with weight gain I have actually entered easier to find sizes. (Used to joke that I could find lots of them that would fit if I could wear them rotated 90 degrees - switching the waist and inseam numbers)

So I used to be able to go to a department store and with a lot of searching, find some pairs and try them on to confirm that they fit.

Then it started getting scarce. On the final offline jeans shopping trip, I went to JC Penny and bought literally every pair of jeans they had in stock that fit me - about 10 pairs.

Now I would just have to buy online if I want any new ones (not counting specially shops)
