Clickbait headline and first paragraph

Begin met with Biden, and vague reports described some sort of angry exchange. Begin’s recollections of that meeting were reported at the time in a mainstream Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Aharonot. Some of the details of what Begin recalls Biden telling him are genuinely shocking, but they seem to now be largely forgotten in Israel — especially a hypothetical Biden floated about the United States bombing cities in Canada. “If attacks were launched from Canada into the US,” Biden remarked, “everyone here would have said, ‘Attack all the cities of Canada, and we don’t care if all the civilians get killed.’”

It seems really clear it was an argument against using an absurd example.

cheery_coffee,

My M1 cost enough that I’m not upgrading until like the M8 or M10…

Can you imagine if they released an 5/6k OLED iMac M2/3 Pro in a press release

cheery_coffee,

Apple didn’t have a claim to all small size screens, they were the only ones who ordered them in the first place. So this isn’t their fault, though I do resent them dropping the 13 mini so suddenly (I had expected to pick one up after this announcement, but they cost the same as the newest pro…)

The small phone project is looking for existing screens so they don’t have to design and pay for the tooling to produce them.

wifi printer setup for a non-mac user (kbin.social)

someone's bringing me their imac, a new brother wifi-capable mfc printer, and their dsl modem/wifi router combo unit. in theory, i should be able to hook up the printer to the wifi (the mac should already be configured for it) and set it up here, even without the modem part connected to the internet (its wifi and local lan will...

cheery_coffee,

Mostly printing just works on Mac. If not go to Settings (click the apple icon in the menu bar), Printers, and yet to manually add the printer. Macos usually grabs the driver’s and everything for you.

If you’re using a brother wireless and it acts weird with the mac, update the printer firmware. That usually resolves issues (it’s very rare I have any issues though).

I’ve been a Mac user for 15 years and my printer is over 10 years old now but still works perfectly. It gives my wife’s PC hell though…

It was so tragic at the end when Rom-eo had Juliet chew his food for him, which he forgot was poisoned, resulting in her untimely death just moments before his own.

cheery_coffee,

Can we at least turn it into the world’s longest Slip’n Slide after the oil runs dry?

cheery_coffee,

I want to watch Lower Decks but don’t want to get Paramount+ on top of all the other streaming services I don’t watch enough for their price.

cheery_coffee,

I like to think of Google as a death fight between hundreds of unsupervised Product Managers all fighting for too few promotions.

They don’t care about the users or the long term, just selling themselves and shitting on the competing PMs to make themselves look good.

Then you’ve got an accounting department trying to reign in the unprofitable stuff for the investors.

cheery_coffee,

I wouldn’t worry that it looks cheap, it looks like you’re putting in effort to look professional which matters more.

And also it doesn’t look cheap to me.

cheery_coffee,

I would rather a rushed ending than to be left hanging (unless they’re going to do a movie or something)

Maybe the last few years are better, but through the late 2010s Netflix very much looked at the per episode drop off rate for viewers and used that to determine if a show would continue to pull in viewers and get renewed. They were quite aggressive and then when other streaming services started coming into play they aggressively tried cutting costs off dead shows and burned a lot of people.

cheery_coffee,

I think colourful gummies are the kid friendly packaging.

Kids love candy, kids will always go through their parents stuff, ergo making it look like candy is a recipe for it getting eaten by kids.

I’m not really into cannabis but I’d rather take a pill for a specific dosage than eat a gummy.

cheery_coffee,

That’s a way better title, less to argue about online though…

Starving people to death via a siege and not allowing passport holders to visit are worlds apart.

Aside from that, it would be a violation of sovereignty to say which countries other countries had to allow in. Countries can and do block passports all the time.

cheery_coffee,

You’re missing the forest for the trees.

I feel like if I continue to argue with you we’ll end up debating what the meaning of every word.

Blocking people’s access to all food, electricity, and water is entirely different than a country banning travel from another country.

I’m having Windows Phone 7 flashbacks.

RIP HTC Raider, you were a great phone that got shafted hard by Google.

cheery_coffee,

This is the real reason programmers are pushing Rust so hard.

With the borrow semantics you have a much better idea who owns your balls than traditional reference models where everyone downstream thinks they own them.

cheery_coffee,

I watch the Nog episode, the acting from Aaron Eisenberg is incredible on that one

cheery_coffee,

It’s just not my thing. I’m not into rat pack and they feel nostalgic and cloying.

The Nog and Vic episode is one of the best DS9 episodes, I just don’t get anything from the smaller scenes.

cheery_coffee,

It’s scummy that they only refund you if you play mostly on Mac and not if you play on Mac at all.

If you drop support for a platform, you should refund ALL the players on that platform.

I’m tired of billions dollar corporations taking away paid content from buyers and attaching all these asterisks to your compensation.

cheery_coffee,

No, I’m suggesting players who bought an unplayable game get a refund.

It’s reasonable to apply it to players before the refund announcement only, just not making it depend on hours played on Mac vs other platforms.

If you had a steam deck and play on that and tally more hours there you’re still losing your paid game on your Mac. But if you refund you shouldn’t get to continue playing on steam deck n

cheery_coffee,

In my opinion that game aged quite poorly.

Revolutionary when it came out, nearly unplayable now though. It’s like a modern Goldeneye.

Assumption here: rich people buying houses only own cheap houses

Reality: rich people are entering the market (via immigration or coming of age) without a house or already have expensive houses.

More supply at the high end mainly affects pricing at the high end, more supply at the low end mainly affects pricing at the low end.

cheery_coffee,

Nobody here is mentioning that the cost to build just increased significantly with interest rates.

Builders take out loans to acquire land and line up supplies and contractors, they sell the unbuilt plots to buyers, then start construction.

It just got a lot harder to buy land and acquire resources, and the price buyers will pay has and is currently decreasing.

They’re seeing higher costs and lower profits, that’s not something their investors will want to pour money into, which reduces their liquidity and ability to build even further.

The clear solution to builders is to limit potential losses by reducing new expenditures until the macro environment stabilizes.

cheery_coffee, (edited )

I’m not saying a fine will work, I’m saying that building houses for just the richest with the idea it will lift up the poor won’t work, the assumptions behind it are unrealistic.

As houses trickle down the market many get rented out instead of sold, or just owned as a secondary property. I know a guy with a house in NYC and SF and he flies between them, I know other people who have their house and their pad for when they’re working in Toronto.

If you only increase supply for the rich, it only marginally increases supply at the bottom, and by less than you’ve built.

If you only built houses for the poor you’d help more people, because the classes aren’t evenly split, they’re exponentially divided. But building only for one market is foolish.

cheery_coffee,

That’s an entirely separate issue, real estate speculation is not the same as development speculation, which is a necessary part of the system.

The government needs to actively build houses or their subject to matter fluctuations, which this is. But if they do build houses then they need to be careful they don’t build first cities like China and over invest too.

cheery_coffee,

Let’s add Reddit to that list too.

cheery_coffee,

Beyond that there are a lot of entities pushing their own narratives via bot farms and such, and it’s completely opaque to the users and mods who is upvoting content, or what’s being buried by powermods.

cheery_coffee,

I hate USB-C because until now the standard didn’t require any markings and the standards themselves are hot garbage.

Go ahead, pull out a USB-C cable from your drawer and tell me what it does. I bet you instantly know which cable is VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, FireWire, or serial, but you’ll never know for sure what your USB-C cable supports.

You got reversibility but at what price?

cheery_coffee,

I’ve never had a good experience with micro-USB, mini USB was meh, but for whatever reason the stuff using micro was always bad.

cheery_coffee,

The barrel connector was reversible, and I don’t think I ever had one fail.

They did always use way too much space with their AC adapter things and for whatever reason nargles liked to steal them.

cheery_coffee,

Is so dumb that HDMI or DisplayPort over USB-C is called “alt mode”

The USB Consortium are the only group worse at naming things than Microsoft.

cheery_coffee, (edited )

I loved FireWire, if we had adopted it instead of USB we’d all be driving flying AI cars by now.

The stuff it could do was really cool, you could network computers, daisy chain it, it could transfer data in real time systems (like digital recording or audio setups), and it was actually designed for power delivery, plus it was much much faster than USB (at the time).

cheery_coffee,

USB has had its share of vulnerabilities too, I’m sure if we have dropped support the last 10 years would have seen a lot of shaves to the design of Firewire.

But it is a shame that so many cool features from the 90’s and 2000’s were just gaping security holes.

cheery_coffee,

Is that user unfriendly? In the desired path where the resource isn’t blocked the options are display an error or try again.

When a request goes to PiHole it just gets redirected to a bad address, so the application hasn’t got any idea why it isn’t working. In most cases a programmer just adds a retry with exponential back off and goes on with their work, because there’s no real cost to doing that for analytics or advertising code.

cheery_coffee,

They probably should have named it “Schwing”
